In the 90s I was a hobby bettor, building an NFL model for myself while working in corporate.
I found myself on a long-haul flight to Australia sitting next to my boss’s boss’s boss—the general manager of a billion-dollar division at Hewlett-Packard. Over the ginger ale and peanuts, she candidly shared her frustrations with the corporate red tape that often tied her hands.
Her comments hit me hard. At the time, I was running a $25 million budget, one of the youngest people at that level in a company of 125,000. If I stayed the course, one day her job could be mine. I knew I had to leave. They offered me six figures on top of my salary and bonus to stay. People thought I was crazy when I turned it down, but the better play was to pass.
That conversation changed the game I was playing. The NFL model I had been building worked well, so I started selling picks. I called the business Wunderdog because I found a niche betting on underdogs.
I spent five more years in startups while Wunderdog grew on the side. In 2006 I made the ultimate bet on myself and left to run Wunderdog full time.
I've always been drawn to judgment calls, and now I make them every day for my clients.
