🏈 NFL: Football season starts now

We head into a new month with Game 1s in the NBA Finals and Stanley Cup Final on the menu this week.

But behind the scenes at VSiN, football season is already underway.

One of my favorite offseason pieces each year comes from Steve Makinen. His latest study examines quality wins and losses from the 2025 season and how they can help project 2026 performance.

One finding jumped off the page:

The last 10 seasons have shown a strong tendency for teams that win a lot of close games to regress the following year. In that span, there have been 81 teams that won six or more games by eight points or fewer. Only 21 improved the next season, while the other 60 declined by an average of 3.1 wins.

Teams fitting that profile this season: Carolina, Chicago, Denver, Houston, Jacksonville, LA Chargers, New England, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Seattle and Tampa Bay.
