Transcript 0:00 [upbeat music] This is VSiN, the sports betting network. The numbers told the story, they always do. He's one of those idiots who believe in analytics. This is a numbers game with Gil Alexander on VSiN. 0:17 Hour number two of a numbers game at VSiN, the sports betting network, VSiN.com, GamePlus, iHeartRadio, YouTube TV, Sirius XM Channel 158. Gil Alexander here at Circa Resort Casino. 0:27 Uh, Kelly on vacation, Kelly in Nashville. Get ready, Nashville, the Kelly Billin experience is happening. Uh, we get tweets. 0:34 Let me, let me try to sift through some of these half a catch play catch tweets to get to ours. Uh, DirtyWater619: "Just grabbed EG8 to one. Thanks, fam." I like when people call other people fam. 0:44 Yeah, you got it, fam, no problem. Uh, this is from James Fraction in Maryland: "Hey, Gil, two things. One, did I hear Chrissy Andrews is back? 0:53 Is that just a c- is this just a cameo, or can Guessing Lines once again feature Mr. Andrews this NFL season? 0:58 And two, please ask Fezzik his thoughts about the impact of overseas travel on the Rams and Seahawks for potential week two bets. Thanks." 1:05 James, I don't know if you heard my, heard my long dissertation on the Rams-Niners travel, uh, history and the history of international games travel, teams going early versus teams late, did a whole thing on it. 1:16 I'll retweet that, uh, but I'll ask Fezzik as well, uh, a little later on here. This is, uh, from, let me try to, again sifting, Martin Bernstein: "Wow, Peter Fornatale Jr. on the show. 1:26 I used to listen to his father spinning records on WNEW 102.7." He says, "Cubs-Rays World Series." Wow. And then, uh, Carnarcy Born said, "Sorry, Gil, where I grew up nobody said play catch. It was always have a catch." 1:38 Oh, stop it. Don't, don't get me involved in this. Don't get me involved. All right, we'll get to more, but ladies and gentlemen, he's making his triumphant return to the network, at least for this hour. 1:50 It's my mishpocha, Chrissy Andrews, the director of the South Point Sports Book at the South Point Hotel Casino. Chrissy, my mishpocha, how are you, sir? I'm great. It's great. 2:02 I'm glad you invited me to come on the show. Yes. And, uh, here I am, and, uh, it's a pleasure to be back. The people love you, even this morn- and, and this morning, but it's other mornings, too. 2:10 We always get questions about, "Hey, are we gonna do Guessing Lines again?" That kind of thing. Um, you're, you're, you're busy doing your thing. You're busy writing books- Mm-hmm... 2:19 which is why you are primarily here today. Right. What is, uh, let's talk about this l- before we get to this book. What is the book, what is the author history that you have now? Well, I actually have four books. Yeah. 2:30 Then One Day was the first, which started [laughs] uh, when you and I used to do, well, we used to s- we started on a podcast, and we had story time. 2:38 And people encouraged me to write these things down, including Tim Lawson. Uh-huh. Who, we'll get to him a little bit later. That's right. 2:46 Uh, so I did it, and, uh, you know, I s- I still get a check every quarter [laughs], you know? It still s- it's sold really well. Such a great success, yeah. Yeah. 2:54 I, I mean, some of the checks are, you know, 80 bucks, but some of them are, you know- It's a bill. Yeah. Uh, yeah, uh, some of them, I mean, it pays for dinner one night. Yeah, it's like [laughs] that's right. 3:03 Uh, but some of them are, you know, well into the hundreds and even a thousand, something like that. But I mean, been selling for, you know, it came out in 2019. You know, so the, I, 3:12 uh, I, matter of fact, I sold two, like, in the last week personally, you know, so I don't know what they sold at Huntington or on Amazon. 3:19 Um, anyway, that was the first one, and Then, Then One Year, which was, you know, um, Anthony Curtis was my publisher, Huntington Press. He said, "You know, we did so well on the first book, well, we need a follow-up." 3:31 I said, "Well, I don't wanna do the same thing. How about a year in the life of a bookmaker?" "Oh, that sounds fantastic." What year do I pick? The year of COVID. [laughs] Which turned out to be- Uh... 3:42 I, I must say, I know it wasn't what you intended- Yeah... and it's not near, it's, it's not the hilarity of the first book. Oh, it's not the hilarity, no. [laughs] It's, it's not the hilarity at all. 3:50 But I'm so glad that you j- that you, in essence, kept a journal of that. Yeah. Because that whole book, Then One Year, I remember reading that a few years after the fact- Yeah... 4:01 and just being like, "Oh my God, I forgot that happened." Oh, I, I, I review it every now and then just to refresh my memory, and I think I told you the other day. 4:09 And I for- I think it was Texas State was playing their 10th game of the season, and that week Utah was playing their first game of the season. [laughs] Just, we forget. 4:18 See, e- even that detail, I, I guarantee 98% of people don't remember that. Oh my God. Yeah. Oh, yeah, uh, yeah, at least 98%. So this was like halfway through, you know, when, when COVID was, you know, in its midst. 4:30 It was like July, 1st of July or something like that. I sent my work to Anth- Anthony Curtis. I says, "Should I keep doing this?" He's, you know, he, you know, fortunately Anthony loves my writing. You know, God bless. 4:41 He says, "I love your writing. Keep doing what you're doing. In the end, we'll figure it all out." So we had about 180,000 words, which is a, wow. I mean, that's like Lord of the Rings, you know? 4:52 [laughs] Something like that. [laughs] He says, "We gotta cut it down to 90,000 words, 'cause I don't, m- 89,999 is what I want." So me and his editor, uh, Deke, Deke Castleman, uh, we, we just worked on it. 5:08 Let's eliminate this, eliminate that, and then, so we cut it down. I, I think, I think Anthony let us get away with 90,028 words. He allowed, he allowed the 28. It came out. Yeah. 5:18 But, you know, it's one of those deals where l- I know, like, Vic Salerno, Roxy Roxborough, a lot of other people in our business, in, in the, you know, that know what it's like to be in the trenches, they love the book. 5:31 They think it's great. You know, they think it's- Yeah... terrific just going through. I think it's great just from a standpoint of a time capsule. It's, it's a harder- Yeah... 5:37 like, the first book you could just fly through- Oh, yeah... 'cause it's so funny. This one you have to kind of read in order. You, you ha- and you also, like, it's a harder read because it's- Definitely... 5:46 it's also, like, really sobering to read back- Yeah... and you're like, "Man, we all lived through this?" Yeah, we had the election that year. Yeah. 5:53 And if you remember, we went to bed that night thinking Donald Trump was gonna be the new president, and they counted the votes. And in the morning- Yeah... it was Joe Biden was president. Yeah. There was... 6:02 And I, I wrote it all. I, I, I try not to be political in any of it. Uh, uh, but I wrote it from a betting standpoint. You know, people, people were betting on Trump overnight, you know, and then- Oh, yes... 6:13 in the morning, yeah, they found out, oh, that wasn't such a good bet. That was a fascinating betting cap- It, it really was... 6:18 betting, betting to, because the, the folks who were pounding Trump in the election voting- Yeah... it was almost a muscle memory of 2016- Right... 6:28 where, if you were, if you recall, it was Florida that was all the, "Wait. What do you mean? He won Florida? What's going on here?" Yeah. And so they thought that was happening again, and it wasn't. Yeah. Yeah. 6:36 It, it wasn't. And, uh, you know, but there's a lot of other stuff in there. Uh, but, uh, I will say this. Wh- when I wrote it, it really was kind of like a stream of consciousness. 6:45 I didn't go back and change anything, you know? And I, I wanted to do it that way. Matter of fact, when, this, that was the year that Brady signed with Tampa Bay. Mm-hmm. 6:54 And I thought, "What a foolish move that is for Tampa Bay-" [laughs] "... to sign..." But by the end- You left it in there? I, yeah, yeah. [laughs] I left it... I mean, listen, that was my thought. 7:02 A- and I do that in, it, it's, seriously, in all my books. I don't go back and change m- m- I, I mean, I change the wordings, re-edit, all that. But I don't change my thoughts. Mm-hmm. 7:12 You know, and I thought Brady, [laughs] I thought signing Brady was crazy, you know? Meanwhile, by the end, I, I bet him to be the MVP of the Super Bowl, [laughs] you know- Yeah... which I won that. You know, so yeah. 7:23 But, um, I thought that was important to do things like the way I felt in real time, you know? And like I said, a lot of people like that book that are in the business. 7:31 Outside of the business, you know, it doesn't, didn't really have, you know, the, the broad appeal of the first book. 7:37 Real, real, then a sort of inside writing question, which I'm not sure how, is interesting to others, but it is to me. When you write that many words on anything, what, what is your process? 7:47 Do you like allot a certain amount of time every day? Or do you just binge write one day and then- No... not go back to it seven days later or? 7:55 No, I, I had to keep my discipline of writing every day, but I didn't say, "Well, I have to write 500 words. I have to write 1,000 words," or some days might've been 2,000 words- Right... 3,000 words. 8:05 You know, whatever it was. Whatever, whatever, you know, uh, dictated for the day to get my thoughts down, you know, I did it. You know, but I did- You must really enjoy writing. Writing is hard. I do like writing. Yeah. 8:16 I like writing. It, it, you know, I mean, whatever it is, there's, you know, uh, different things appeal to different people, you know? Yeah. But I enjoy writing. I enjoy the whole process. 8:24 It's something that's, uh, kind of cathartic to me. So that's Then One Day followed by Then One Year. Yeah. And then you wrote a novel. I did write a novel. 8:32 Adelphos Mu, I, which I probably mistitled it, 'cause people didn't get it, but in parentheses, My Brother. So if you go on Amazon, just look for My Brother, My Brother. Mm-hmm. 8:41 And I gotta tell you, of all the things I've written, I'm most proud of that. I, I, I think it's a terrific book. It didn't get- Absolutely mistitled it. 8:49 Like the Pina Colada song, that kind of thing, where it should've been called that- Oh... instead of Escape or whatever it is? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, that, yeah. I, I mistitled it. And matter of fact, I'm thinking about... 8:58 My, my wife said, "You should retitle it, you know, re- reissue it under a different title." Yeah. In the end, uh, we've, we've kind of kicked around what we should do, and I was thinking Uncommitted Sins. Hmm. 9:10 Now, you've read the book. I read the book. I- It's the uncommitted sins that got him into trouble. I'm not blowing smoke here. I r- I don't read fiction as an adult. I don't know, my brain doesn't do it. 9:20 But I know it was you, and then I, I was like, "Oh, it's by, it's my Mish Bucholz writing it. I'm gonna read it." It was great. It was fantastic. Yeah. I really liked it. Everybody who's read it thinks it's fantastic. 9:29 Yeah. I can tell you that. And I, like I said, I'm most proud of that work than, than I am of anything else. Would you write another novel? I started one. 9:37 Um, and then, uh, you know, I'm probably like a third of the way through it. It's one of those things, like I know what's gonna happen. I don't know how it's gonna happen. 9:45 But I'm about a third of the way through it, and, uh, you know, probably, uh, after football I might get to it again and write a little bit more. 9:52 Oh, that's interesting, that you, as you're writing it, you almost can't wait to see what happens also. Well, I, I would say this, that, you know, I've, I've, 10:02 not that I took classes, but I read some things about, you know, uh, from writers on h- on their process. 10:08 And the characters, if, if, if you're a good writer, and I like to think I'm pretty good, you know, characters will take on a life of their own. Yes. 10:14 You know, you, as you're writing it, you think, "Boy, th- he wouldn't do that." And you see that all the time in movies, you know, it's get, they'll say, "What? That doesn't make sense." 10:22 Well, it kind of, uh, I, I, I kind of would say the same thing, you know? Uh, characters kind of take on a life. They, they went on a path, like, that I didn't really intend. 10:31 And the other thing in that, in that book, my novel, there's a lot of stuff, like at the end I says, "Oh, you know, I didn't even realize that." You know? And like some- Yeah. [laughs]... 10:39 there really, like some karma stuff, you know? And c- I don't wanna, I don't wanna blow it, uh, you know. Let's not spoil the book or- Yeah... spoil the book or anything. Yeah. 10:46 But it, th- there's some stuff like, oh, that, that, that makes sense on how that happened, and I didn't even realize it when I was writing it. And what is the best way to get all these books, by the way? 10:54 Well, those ones that I just mentioned, on Amazon- Amazon... is the best way. All right. Although I will say this. 10:59 Tim Lawson, A Better Life, I just sent him those, not the novel, although I might sell him, send him the novel as well. I'm thinking about it. Gotta talk to him about it. 11:09 We're gonna sell these, those, these three books, including this one. Then One Life. Then One Life, as a package. The, so you can get all three. Then One Day, Then One Year, Then One Life. Yeah. 11:19 And can we, w- we'll get into Then One Life- Yeah... your latest book, here after the break. But the inspiration for the title came from producer number seven of this show, right? Number seven? 11:28 I c- I've lost- It was seven... track of how many producers there are. Yeah. But yeah. We're at 10 now. Yeah. Okay. J- Jason Conn. Yeah. Because you, when you would do story time on the podcast- Yeah... 11:38 it would always, not always, but a lot of times it would be like, "Then one day." No, it was always- Always... "And then one day." [laughs] Yeah. 11:44 And he s- And I was like, it was kind of like- And it was his suggestion to do that. Yeah. Yeah, great. Yeah. And I- Jason, Jason Conn, that's your legacy, buddy. And I've, it's worked out well. 11:52 We'll talk about Then One Day. Get some Chris, uh, get Chrissy's thoughts on some sports betting stuff, too. Uh, we get tweets and beat in the book. Most of these are, are on you. 14:07 Uh, Dalgo, uh, "I was on Cincinnati, uh, radio or, or YouTube channel, The Crown, this morning." So he says, "Seeing Gil with James Rabian on The Crown was a blending of two worlds I didn't expect. Good," blank, he says. 14:19 Thank you. Uh, thank you to them for having me on. Talk Cincinnati open. Uh, this is from, let's see, Jay Green. "Gil, you gotta guess a, you gotta guess a line. Any line, doesn't matter, but we need to know- [laughs]... 14:30 if Chrissy likes your number better. Let's go." [laughs] Thank you, Jay Green. That's a throwback to the old guessing lines day, uh, days. Bushy Head, "Welcome back, Chris. 14:39 Does Chrissy have any thoughts on the horse racing scandal?" Are you familiar with this? Oh, oh, yeah. So we had Peter Fornatale on earlier. I know. 14:45 I miss Peter 'cause I, I actually gotta get in touch with Peter 'cause in this book- Yeah... I have a whole chapter on horse racing, on my thoughts about horse racing. Ooh. Some good and ba- you know, I, you know... 14:56 [laughs] Where does, where does this scandal rank in the pantheon of horse racing scandals? Well, I think we're still kind of going through it. We are. You know? Yeah. 15:03 I mean, uh, the, they, it came out yesterday that they gave him some illegal drugs, but it was a month before the race. Oh. So I don't know how, I, I don't know the physiology of how that works, you know? Right. 15:14 I don't know, but there's something going on, I know that, so, uh, but I, I think before we start making, you know, concrete accusations, I think there's still a lot of investigation that needs to be done. 15:25 Chris Heath, "One of my favorite then one day stories is the huge pick five ticket at Bay Meadows where Chrissy's father-in-" Well, it was pick six... pick six. 15:31 [laughs] "Where Chrissy's father-in-law gets in on the action." [laughs] Yeah. That's the one where s- where, is it Pam who was, who was, uh, cheering, and you're like, "Oh, no." That was, well, my first wife. 15:41 She was- Oh, your first wife. Yeah. I'm sorry. [laughs] Yeah. I apologize. Uh, let's see. [clears throat] Pardon me. 15:45 [clears throat] Money Gun Guz, "This brings back so much nostalgia and great memories from the Monday football lines. How does Chris feel about his Steelers this year? Great show." 15:54 Well, they sure looked good last night, but I'm on with a bunch of guys, you know, from Pittsburgh. There's like 20 of us. Yeah. Those boys. You know, and I'm a Penn State fan, so I thought Aller was fantastic. 16:04 He looked terrific. Uh, I, I, you know, I don't wanna jump on, you know, knocking James Franklin, but I don't think he ever really developed quarterbacks. He had Christian Hackenberg, too, if you remember. I do. 16:14 Was- Who could forget? Well, okay. Yeah. But coming out of high school, he was like the number one quarterback. Yeah. And he never developed. And, uh- Yeah... and you know, they said the same thing about Aller. 16:22 He just never developed under Franklin. Well, maybe he's developing under... Listen, McCarthy, we could knock him on... But you know, he's had some great quarterback play under his tutelage, and maybe he found... 16:32 Well, I, you know, I heard some guys, I'm not a scout or anything, they said Aller's footwork wa- was bad, but now it looks like it's much improved. That might be something that he's- Yeah... um, worked on. 16:42 But he looks great. Maybe. I don't know. I'm gonna, I'm cautiously optimistic. How's that sound? Um, you can't get away from a, from a bookmaking, uh, question, though. Yeah. 16:50 Bobby, Bobby Rigogliano, and thank you for the question, Bobby, first row mez, "Can you ask Mr. Andrews," you're Mr. Andrews, by the way- Yeah... "about the two and a half..." 16:58 Oh, that just got knocked off my screen just there. Uh, but, "Can you ask Mr. Andrews about the two and a half and three and a half point line for the NFL- Yeah... 17:04 years ago at South Point to clarify that if the line opens at plus two and a half and stays all week, you take the dog. If the line opens and stays all week at minus three and a half, you take the favorite. 17:12 Thank you both." Yeah. No, that's a great question, and that's something I get all the time. Listen, obviously, if a game's sitting at two and a half, if you can get three, go get the three. Mm-hmm. You know? 17:21 But the, the thing is, i- if the sharp money was on the favorite, that money, it'd be three everywhere, but it's not. 17:29 So whenever you see a three, you know, the wise guys take it, or maybe they're betting the money line or something like that. 17:34 So the right side, and you know, the right side loses all the time, but you know, probably, you know, 58% of the time, the right side would be the dog in that situation. 17:44 Conversely, if a number's sitting at three and a half all week and never goes to three, and once again, of course you wanna lay three if you have the opportunity. Mm-hmm. Um, that... 17:53 A- and sometimes you'll see a game that's like three and a half, the money line might be like a $1.90 or something like that. That's a strong three and a half. 18:01 That means that the favorite's the right side, you know, a- according to the sharp money. 18:06 And again, probably, I mean, you're gonna lose 40, 42% of the time playing that, but the right side is probably the favorite in that situation. Very interesting. 18:15 I, I love some of your old, uh, some of the old tenets that you've learned through the, the decades that we wouldn't necessarily know instinctively like that. 18:20 Well, I was on something, you know, this is about a month ago, and guys were asking about, like, a lot of the new guys in the, you know, that we saw on Bet Bash, you know? Well, you weren't there. I wasn't there. 18:29 I'm gonna... Anyway, I said, "A lot of these young kids, their, their IQ is certainly much, much higher than mine," you know? Yeah. But they don't have the wisdom that I have mo- from experience. From experience. 18:40 You know, from experience. Yeah. You know? Um- Just being around this business a long time. By the way, I call you my mishpacha. You're the, uh, sports book director of the South Point. I, I bury the headline. 18:48 You are in the Sports-... gambling. I mean, it'll just, let me be distinct- Yeah... you know, make a distinction. This is the Sports Betting Hall of Fame here. No, I'm in the Sports Betting Hall. 18:57 You're in the sports- This is the sports gambling one. Oh, right. The, you're in the Sports Betting Hall of Fame. Right. And so Spanky had to name his the Sports Gambling Hall of Fame. Right, right. Correct. 19:04 So you're a Hall of Famer, for God's sakes. I should, I should have introduced you like Jo- Joe Buck introduces Troy Aikman- Oh, yeah... with the Hall of Famer Chris Evert. Yeah. All right. Then One Life- Yeah... 19:14 is the third book. This is the new book. Yeah. Um, I immediately read the last chapter first. Okay. [laughs] That was a VSIN chapter. Yeah, it's a, that's a chapter on VSIN. [laughs] I told the truth. What is... 19:24 Well, 'cause what is... How do you encapsulate one life into one book? Uh, it's hard, you know? And I, again, I, you know, I followed Anthony's... I kept, kept this under 90,000 words. 19:35 I coulda had nine million words, [laughs] you know? Yeah. But I kept it under 90,000. Really, the inspiration for the book, what, what started me on this path, was my wife had that brain tumor. And there... 19:47 I think it's the third chapter in the book, Pamela, my wife. And, uh, wow, I mean, you have to kinda read it, but it, it's, it's hard for me to read it. 19:58 It's very touching, you know, what we went through, and that was really- You were telling me off-air the other day when- Yeah... 20:04 when we were hanging out at the South Point, you were telling me that's, like, the one chapter you can't reread. I can't reread it. And I, and, and her... 20:11 We, we were sending out an email, 'cause she had a lot of people asking. So this was, like, you know, three, four months of me sending out an email every night. And fortunately, her cousin kept all the emails. 20:22 So I had to r- I had to reread those to write the chapter, and it's hard for me to get through 'em, 'cause sh- what happened to her is, was devastating. Mm. You know? And when I... 20:34 And I, I told you, my, my writing process, the way I'll write something is, you know, e- even in my head I know it's just a draft, and then go back and add adjectives and similes and whatever. 20:47 Uh, but that one I, I couldn't do. And I knew it while I was writing it. I said, "I just have to write this as best as I can the first time through- Mm... 'cause I'm not gonna be able to go through this thing again." 20:56 And even now, I, I, I'll go to reread it and I can't get through it. You know? It's just, it's hard for me. It's really difficult. Both of you have, both of you have been dealt tough cards in, in the health department. 21:07 We, we have. Yeah. And, uh, so that, that, that was probably the inspiration. And when I started it, I started thinking, "I wonder if I could write a book on this." 21:15 And, uh, I got to about 6,000 words in that, uh, chapter a- and I said, "You know, I really, I can't make a book out of this." Do you know Mary Roach? Do you know who that is by any chance? Sounds familiar. Yeah. 21:27 She, she's written, um, some science books, but to, to guys like us who are not scientists, you know? [laughs] Right. You know? But I mean... And I've read two or three of her books, they're really good. 21:37 If, if this was her writing this book, she could get 300 pages out of it, going through the history of, you know, h- how they operate on brain tumors and etc. 21:49 By the way, she had, I don't know if, know if I mentioned it, it was a brain tumor that she had, and it was not cancerous. 21:54 And r- as soon as I found out it wasn't cancer, I says, "Oh, this is gonna be a walk in the park." No. 21:59 There's a lot of other variables that I kinda go through, and it seemed like every one [laughs] for her was bad, you know? Uh, but anyway, some- But she's doing gr- just to let everybody know- Yeah... 22:08 she's doing great now. She's doing well. Yeah. I mean, she lives her full life. Yeah. You know? And, uh, there's certain things that she has to deal with, you know, that she never fully recovered. Mm-hmm. 22:18 I mean, she, when, when she went in she was, uh, she was the retail manager of, uh, Moana Nursery. And anybody knows in, in Reno, that's the biggest nursery in Reno. I mean, she was a, an executive, you know? 22:29 And then, you know, she just, uh, you know, she couldn't do that anymore, you know? And even now there's some things, like she can't drive at night and some things like that. 22:37 You know, there's some, there's issues that, that have lingered, but overall she's doing well. So that was the inspiration that got me going. Then of course I had [laughs] my episode of, uh- Yes... you know? 22:48 I mean, in- Hey man, you were, you were- [laughs]... kinda touch and go there for a while. Oh, man. There's a picture of me in the book and you can see, oh man, he don't look so good, [laughs] you know? 22:57 Well, I also reme- I mean, not to, not to be like, eh, I, you know, too, too serious about things, but yeah, I remember you even saying to me at some points, like, you go, "Gil, if they, if I, you can just give me, if you can guarantee me 10 more years right now, I'd take it." 23:09 Oh, my God, yeah. Oh. Man, they gave me, 2017 they gave me two years to live. Yeah. And by, and by 2019, that was two years later, I mean, I always say I was in my last couple of months. 23:20 Pam says, "You were in your last couple of weeks. You weren't gonna make it any further." And I had the bone marrow transplant. You were green, man. I was, you know, in bad, bad shape. Yeah. 23:29 And now, some people tell me about it now. They didn't wanna tell me about it when you're going through it. Oh, of course. What are we gonna say then? But I've seen some guys- Yeah... with cancer which, you know... 23:36 And by the way, my, uh, MDS, the, the thing I had, it, uh, if you go look it up, some people define it as cancer and some people don't. 23:45 When I asked my doctors at USC, and I talk about them, God bless them, they said, "Well, I don't know about anybody else, but we treat it as cancer." [laughs] You know, that's... 23:53 And by the way, USC at this point, this is even before I was con- after two years you're considered cured, you know? Even before I was part of the statistics. They are now the number one bone marrow transplant, uh, 24:06 um, uh, you know, success rate in- Mm... America, which, and, and maybe the world, you know? So I was very lucky to fall into their hands. Yeah. It was, it's, and it's a painful thing also. Oh. 24:16 Like, I just remember you go there. Those first couple of weeks, it, I don't know how much- Thankfully we're, we're, we'll come back... yeah, we got a couple more things we need to get to. Yeah. 24:22 There's, there's much more in this book than just that stuff, though. You're right. Exactly. Uh, Then One Year, which again, does end with a VSIN chapter. 24:29 Chrissy Andrews, the Hall of Famer, on a Numbers Game right here at VSIN. Tune in Thursday, August 20th, so a week from this Thursday, August 20th, 5:00 PM Eastern only on VSiN, the sports betting network. 25:36 Gil Alexander with, uh, Chris Andrews, the- Love to interrupt you, but- Yeah... I love Nick Bakay. Oh, he's the greatest. I love Nick Bakay. 25:43 He's the guy, I told, I was telling you, he, he invited me to go see one of his shoots for Bookie, which was his, uh, show on, uh, was it HBO or Showtime? I can't remember. I think it was HBO. HBO, yeah. 25:52 And, uh, like, oh, that's, oh, thank you so much. Where is it? Oh, it's in LA. Oh, great. What time? 3:00 AM. Really? Where? Uh, the worst part of LA possible. [laughs] I'm like, "Oh, good, thank you so much." 26:01 Appreciate it. Um, but he's the best, absolute best. Has such a great... You know, I, I always ask him to tell his OJ story, uh, in a golf parking lot. Right. So funny. [clears throat] Pardon me. 26:12 This is, uh, Dave Hormel, Dave Hormel on Twitter, "Three words that describe Chris Andrews: simply the best." Yeah. Well, thank you. There it is. That's nice. Uh, Gamblord, "Nice hearing you, Chrissy, with Gil again. 26:24 Did you say there was a way to buy all your books together?" Yes. Uh, I sent them all to, uh, to Tim Lawson. His website is, uh, The Better, B-E-T-T-E-R, The Better Life. And, uh, I, I haven't heard... I just sent him... 26:40 Um, what's today? Friday? Yeah. I sent 'em on Monday. Yeah. So I haven't heard. I hope he's got 'em already. I haven't heard. By the way, we, we- But as soon as he has it, he'll have it... we love Tim Lawson. 26:49 Oh, he's great. Tim Lawson, uh, cares so lovingly, so deeply about all that we have done, all that you've done. Mm-hmm. And the fact that he is willing to sell them on his site, it's such a great thing. Oh, yeah. 27:01 And we, we appreciate it. Yeah, really. Megapod, his story in, by the way- Yeah, right... Tim Lawson. Yeah. Sam Ginsberg. Oh, yeah. So great to hear- Pittsburgh boy... so great to hear you and Chris. 27:09 Greetings from Pittsburgh, and remember, once again, Mike Tomlin will not have a [laughs] losing season. [laughs] Um, okay. 27:15 We, we, you were talking about sobering stuff of, of obviously health issues, but d- give us a, give us some funny tales from- Okay, yeah... from over the years... 27:21 I just want to make, you know, 'cause there is, listen- Or that one story... my story, my wife's story. My son passed away a year and a half ago. I include that in the book. 27:30 I have another, you know, I, I didn't know whether to include this, but guys encouraged me to. When my dog died right in front of my, of, of a, from a broken neck, you know. Oh. 27:39 And when my one friend, Barry, I don't know if you know Barry, Barry Fellows, he might be listening, says, "That made me cry listening to it." But anyway, watch or reading it. But it's not all doom and gloom. 27:48 There's a lot of funny stories in there. Matter of fact, uh, the same guy, Barry, telling the funniest story in there, and I, it's a very short story. We had this good friend when we were living in Reno, Flash Astrin. 28:00 [laughs] And he is a, Flash is a character. 28:03 Anyway, uh, my, my routine, uh, for a lot of years o- on and during football season, I'd put the numbers up, you know, Monday morning, and I'd go see John Folinsky, my, one of my dear, dear friends, ran John O'Squaga's Nugget. 28:20 You know, and we'd go, and kind of like the joke in the book is we either sat there, had coffee, and bragged about how smart we were or complained about how unlucky we were over the weekend. 28:30 This was one of those unlucky ones, you know? So we're sitting there, and we got murdered this weekend. And I remember, so Johnny's sitting there. 28:36 I could see him, he's going through, like, the, the bet report, you know, all the bets. And he's going through, and I see his eyes go, like, widen. Like, "John, what's up?" He goes, "Okay, let me... 28:48 I, I, I skipped the, the, the lead here." There's one game that was a tie, and the number was right around pick all week. 28:57 And one side would be favored, and John, like a lot of us, we move off a pick quickly, 'cause what's the chance of a tie? Anyway, one one side, one the other side, one... 29:06 So there was essentially no losing tickets, and the wise guys either took plus one on one side or plus one on the other side, and the game comes tied. So John's going through, and I see him go like, "What the?" 29:19 I says, "What? What is it, Johnny?" Uh, [laughs] he goes, "Somebody bought half a point off of Pick 'Em for 50 bucks, 60 to win 50." I says, "Come on, get a..." He shows me. He goes, "Look, here it is." 29:33 I swear to God this is the truth. If this was on TV, you'd say, "This is the phoniest thing I've ever seen." Except I happened to be right there. Our friend Flash- Flash Astrin... 29:41 Flash Astrin comes in, got the ticket, and waves it right just as Johnny's doing it. [laughs] Waves it like this. And he goes, "Wee!" [laughs] Not to be confused with the, uh, with the Tony Salinas Whiskey. No, no. 29:55 It's a good, no, different story. I wouldn't put that in the book either, by the way. Yeah, yeah. Yeah. [laughs] But wee! And I mean, Johnny's turning red. He's so pissed. 30:03 [laughs] And the madder he gets, the more I'm laughing, you know? But I mean, if, like I said, if you knew Flash, what a character he is. Just a, a nut. Loved to play poker, loved to bet, loved to run around with women. 30:16 I mean, the whole thing, you know? And, and John, and when Flash leaves, he, John's just seething. He looks at me, "Can you believe a 35-year-old man says wee?" [laughs] And now I say it as often as I can. 30:27 I love saying it. What a, what a maneuver by him to buy the half point as it turns out. Bought half a point off a pick. [laughs] That's- I mean, the only time it's value is if you know the game is going tied... 30:37 great moments in gambling history. Oh my God. And that, that's one of the funny ones. That's, but there's a lot of, uh, little funny stories in there that, uh... I ran into Nick Bogdanovich last week. 30:47 This is essential... Oh, go, go ahead. I'm sorry. Well, I was gonna say, and Nick, I, I, and Nick's, you know, he read the book and he says, "Oh my God, I forgot about that one story." 30:54 And there's one little passage, me, Nick, and the dead guy. [laughs] So- Oh, I remember that story... you remember that? 31:00 Yeah, this is the old, the D, before it was the D was Fitzgerald's, and Nick and I would, you know, during our lunch break, we'd walk around town and check the numbers and maybe make a bet or two, and we were in Fitzgerald's. 31:11 You know, they had a, a, a Leroy's there, and you know, we made a couple bets, and you know, "Well, let's go hit the bathroom before we head back to the Golden Nugget." We were working at Golden Nugget. 31:20 Uh, [laughs] we walk in the bathroom. There's like a group of guys looking in the stall. Like, what the hell's going on here? And you know, a guy look, one guy looks at us. 31:29 He goes, "I, I think the guy's dead on the toilet." And looked through the crack, and geez, you know, it looks... And we kind of jimmy the door open, yeah, uh, yeah, he's dead. [laughs] Yeah, he's dead. Yeah. 31:41 "You wanna give him mouth-to-mouth? I do not, but feel free if you would like to. [laughs] I'm not giving him mouth-to-mouth. He, he dead," you know? And, uh, anyway- He did... Nick read, Nick read the... 31:50 He goes, "Oh, I'd forgotten all about that story." Oh, yeah. So yeah. Yeah. 31:53 These, by the way, these are not, I, I know somebody who works at a strip casino, and he told me a story just yesterday about, had to do with a bathroom stall and a person in there who they thought was... 32:03 And this is just modern day. Oh, yeah. This is at, at, at the Wi- at the Wynn specifically- Yeah... this was. Yeah, so I mean, it's- Oh, yeah, those things happen, yeah. Yeah. 32:11 Uh, Bama Slugger, so glad to see you on, uh, with Gil today. I am watching the replay now. Uh, and Auburnus, this interview turned into a lesson about the writing process, and I really appreciate it. 32:21 Um, I'm fascinated in stuff like that. So this essentially, Then One Life- Yeah... is essentially your memoir in the end, would you call it, or is that the right- Uh, I think, I think that's fairly accurate. Yeah. 32:31 Yeah, I mean, it, it, it's, it's a memoir in, in some senses. There's, you know, there's a lot of good stories, a lot, lot of funny stories, a lot of things that, you know, just stuff that happened. 32:41 I go through a lot of memorable Super Bowls, you know, some good, some not so good, [laughs] you know? Mm-hmm. And, uh- What was the worst? Oh, the worst, without a doubt, is, uh, when the Rams beat the Titans. 32:53 One yard away- One yard away... from tying it. 32:54 That was, you know, um, and I go in, and I, I talk about it in there, and, uh, I think there was probably right around then, I, I was probably the highest paid sports book director 33:05 in Nevada, but it was all- You were at Cal-Neva at the time? I was at Cal-Neva. I mean, but I owned a piece of the company. 33:11 I constructed my personal deal, take a fairly small salary, but to have it all on the back end, you know, if I won, and we, you know, we won a lot of money back then, you know? 33:22 But, uh, you could also lose a lot of money, too. Mm-hmm. And we got murdered that Super Bowl. I opened the Rams, uh, in the future book at 300 to 1. 33:31 You know, even with Trent Green, pretty good quarterback, but they had, you know, I mean, they were terrible the year before, if you remember. I think they won four games the year before. Then Trent Green gets hurt. 33:40 Yes, he does. They bring in this guy who was stocking- Shelves... shelves two weeks ago. Yeah. [laughs] Got cut numerous times. He came from the Iowa Barnstormers or something like that. Kurt Warner, who's this guy? 33:51 Kurt War- [laughs] And then, uh, Dick Vermeil, who, you know, a great coach, and from all indications, a great guy, but always sees the world through rose-colored lens. "We'll play good football, and we're gonna be..." 34:03 I mean, Dick Vermeil's out of his mind. I went back to 300 to 1 with him. We, and after week one- That's when people came in. Yeah, they came in. So this was week one. 34:15 I saw Kurt Warner, and I think it wa- uh, um, it's in the book, but I can't, I, I think it was the Ravens, you know, great defensive team for many years. 34:23 He lit 'em up, and right away I'm thinking, "Man, I am in big trouble here with this bet," 'cause I mean, we had futures like this on the Rams. So that's all it took was the one game, and people just started betting it. 34:34 Yeah, and but all through, I mean, they were on the Rams all the time. I mean, it was a miracle I even got through the season. Now we get to the Super Bowl. Ugh. 34:41 And, you know, I mean, I got this much in futures I just couldn't get off, and you know, at, at South Point, we famously don't juice numbers. Right. I didn't juice nu- Explain that. 34:50 If Michael Gaughan from the top says, "Don't, don't move-" "Don't move the juice." Yeah. You know, everything's at 11 to 10. Mm-hmm. Everything's at 11 to 10. 34:57 You know, just w- if you have to move the number, move the number. And he tells me, "Don't sit on a number just 'cause you're afraid of getting middled or sided or whatever. Move the number." 35:06 Well, I always had that same philosophy, even at Cal-Neva. Now, if you remember that, that game was between six and F7, six and F7. Oh. The Rams a favorite. So [laughs] I don't know if you ever- Hold, hold that thought. 35:18 Okay. Rams end up winning that Super Bowl, for those who don't remember, by seven, as the Titans came up one yard shy of potentially tying it and pushing it into overtime. 35:27 More with Chrissy Andrews right here on a Numbers Game at VSiN, the Sports Betting Network. Uh, you can... 37:37 [laughs] God knows I can't set up a website, but, you know, I could do Venmo, and I can barely do that. 37:42 [laughs] Chris-Andrews-247, and send me 25 bucks for the book and for postage and handling, and I'll get it in the mail the next day. Yeah. When you were going through it, was... Oh, finish... 37:56 By the way, finish your Rams title. Oh, so the Rams thing. Yeah. So anyway, we're between six and half seven, six and half seven all week. 38:01 And I remember my, my old girlfriend, telling her, I says, "Well, you know, we need the Titans, but I'm telling you, if this game comes seven, we lose a for- We. Yeah. You know, she knew- The fu-... 38:11 kind of clo- The futures, the game. Yeah. Everything. She knew kind of close- Mm-hmm... of what, how much I was gonna lose. I didn't give her the exact figure, but she had a ballpark, you know? 38:20 So, uh- Can, can you give a-... if you remember- Can you give us a ballpark? Are we talking- No. No. That's... [laughs] So [laughs] let, l- I'll put it this way. That would be a no. 38:27 Let, let me say, for me, it was a fortune. Felt, felt... I felt compelled to ask. Billy Walters would cut cards for you for that same amount without batting an eyelash. Oh. Let me just put it that way. Okay. Anyway, 38:38 th- when, i- if you re- and I remember the game well, Titans tie it up. 18 seconds later, Kurt Warner throws the touchdown pass. I think it was to Torry Holt. Yeah. They go up by seven with, like, a minute to play. 38:51 And l- and I always said, back then, we didn't have call waiting, you know? Or we didn't have I- caller ID. Phone rings. I know it's her ring. I pick up the phone, and she just screams into the phone. 39:02 I says, "Yeah, I know." Hang up. And, uh, anyway- [laughs] So we, we were going on- Sounds like a loving relationship though, right? [laughs] We had our ups and downs. Yes. [laughs] We're not no longer together- Yeah... 39:16 let's put it that way. Uh. So we, we were going through, just without any specific plans, going through northern California, you know, just getting in the car and going. And like I s- always say, I'm typical guy. 39:26 I did all the driving, but she was waiting for me at, you know, "You wanna drive?" "Nope." You know, I get in the car. "Wanna listen to anything?" I said, "Put on Abbey Road." 39:36 And I just put my head against the window, closed my eyes. And, uh, the sixth song is, uh, we talked about The Beatles. Yeah. I Want You (She's So Heavy), that long jam of The Beatles. 39:47 Very atypical of The Beatles, but I love that song. You know, very bluesy with a little bit of jazz and, you know, kind of heavy guitars. And, uh, after that song, I picked my head up. 39:56 I says, "You know, I really love that song." She goes, "Oh, my God." Wow. "I thought you weren't gonna talk for the next two weeks." [laughs] I said, "Nah." I says, "What can I tell ya? I mean, it's only money. 40:06 What am I gonna do? I try to make it back. What, what else- Yeah... what do you want me to do?" There you go. You snapped out of it. Yeah. Curtesy of Lennon and McCartney. 40:12 I mean, it, yeah, it took me half an hour or so to get out of it. But, you know, we, you know, listen, and God knows if you read this book, there's a lot worse things than losing money, you know? 40:21 Was, was there a chapter that you wrote... By the way, give us some of the names of the chapters. There's Pamela, where you talk about your wife. Uh- The first- V- VSIN is the very- Yeah... 40:29 succinctly titled final chapter. Yeah. Here, let me just run through it. Well, first of all, the introduction, and I know you... Or the forward. You wrote a great forward for Then One Day. Then, Then One Day. 40:39 And my daughter- An honor of... Can I tell you something? An honor of a lifetime to be able to do that. Well, my daughter wrote this forward- Oh, very nice... for this one. And it's beautiful. I, I mean, I- Yeah... 40:48 I can't thank her enough. Anyway, here's the chapters. Jimmy Vaccaro, number o- bat and lead off. How's Jimmy doing? He's doing okay. Doing okay. Okay. 40:56 Uh, the second, b- big Nick George is another guy I grew up with a little. Oh, wow. Uh, then Pamela, then my son, Joe, Joseph Zachary Andrews. But then Cal-Neva days. Cal-Neva. Pittsburgh. Horse racing. 41:11 Natal would like that one. Uh, opening the NCAA tournament numbers. Mm, yes. Which we used to do at our first customer was Derek Stevens. Remember Derek would bet all the games? He bet e- he was betting every game. Yeah. 41:21 10 times a rattle. The only bad part- 10 times a rattle. [laughs] Yeah. I, it, but [laughs] Derek bet a lot of dogs. Pretty sharp guy. Yeah. 41:28 And by the time they tipped off, we needed Derek to win, like, pretty much every bet. Yeah. He didn't do so well that year. Yeah. Obviously, he's recovered. You know, he's- He's, he's doing okay... 41:37 I think he's doing okay. Yeah. Uh, anyway, that and then, uh, Against the Number. That was my own company I had for a little while. I remember that, yeah. 41:44 And Frank Tody, who's been Michael's partner for a long time, and a lot of people don't know Frank. Michael Gaughan's partner. Michael Gaughan's longtime partner. Yeah. But I wrote a- Owner of the South Point... 41:52 I want one, a, a chapter on Frank, and it's one of those I know Frank would not want me to write that chapter, that's why I didn't ask him. Again, easier to ask- Do it, ask later... ask forgiveness and not permission. 42:04 Yeah. And then Jackie Gaughan. Then the dog thing, Lulu. That's my dog that died in, in my arms essentially. Kevin White, you remember that story? Oh, what was that story? Yes. 42:16 A guy that went crazy on the radio, and he became... He started off, he was in the mafia, then he was a Texas Ranger. Oh. He was a Sikh warrior. [laughs] Wow. This, that's it. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. 42:28 And that's- [laughs] That's right. Okay. I h- that's a great chapter. Too much to talk about here. The next is MVS. That's the story of my thing. 42:37 And then want characters, just, you know, I think the Flash is in that one. Then Reno, Roxy. 42:43 By the way, there's some Roxy stories, and I made sure to run them by Roxy first, 'cause they're, let's just say, they're not very complimentary to either one of us. [laughs] To either me or Roxy. 42:52 Hey, hey, there's this, uh, in- inside, uh, exchange I had with you once. I don't know if you remember this, in the back office. "Hey, Chrissy, why did Roxy move to Thailand?" That was a whole... [laughs] Yeah. 43:01 That's right. A whole thing. [laughs] But there's, I mean, uh, it, it, my, when I signed my first book to Roxy, the, it, the ins- wrot- "My dear friend, where would we be without each other?" 43:12 Probably out drinking and gambling somewhere- Yeah... 'cause that's, that's the life me and Roxanne live. And Super Bowls. Mm-hmm. And another chapter very near, dear to my heart, Uncle Nicky, my Uncle Jack's brother. 43:24 Yeah. And that's, that's another story. And that's semi-tragic, but also pretty funny too. He was a character. Then brushes with greatness, including seeing Jack Nicholson and having a little exchange [laughs] with him. 43:37 Oh, okay. A little exchange. Uh, then William Hill Football. Hmm. Uh, then Hall of Fame, I just, you know- Yeah... 43:45 area, and just I had a couple, my, uh, my Hall of Fame introduction of my Uncle Jack, and then my own speech that I did there. Then my licensing, and I ran that one by Richard Shoots. 43:56 I says, "Am I gonna get in trouble writing this?" What do you mean by licensing? When I got my gaming license. Oh, oh, okay. I got my gaming license. A little bit hairy, I tell you right now. 44:05 You mean back in the day when you first got it? Back in the day. Okay. Yeah, back in the day. So I ran it by Richard. I said, "Richard, is all..." He goes, "Well, you told the truth." He says, "And, you know- Yeah... 44:13 what can they do to you at this point?" [laughs] Yeah. So I ran that by Richard. Then PASPA, all the stuff about- PASPA, yeah... how, how it's changed the industry and all that. 44:23 Then the last chapter is VSiN, uh, it's- Care to say anything about the VSiN chapter succinctly, uh, in a sentence or two? Uh, I, I, the only thing I would say is I wrote the truth. You did. You know? You did. 44:33 And, uh, some of it's complimentary, some of it is maybe not. But I think it depends on your, your frame of reference. It's your perspective on everything. Yeah, your perspective. Yeah. I think, uh, 44:44 people might see it different ways, uh, but I, I w- I wrote the truth. 44:48 Um, I know you're doing great over there 'cause I was there Wednes- Wednesday in the middle of the day at the beginning of August over there at the South Point, and it is just banging over there. Yeah. 45:00 W- humanity, all... I was like, "Where... W- what is going on in here?" And if you find yourself at the South Point there on a Friday night, let's say- Oh... you can barely walk through the middle casino floor. 45:11 [laughs] There's times I can barely walk. I, we have the Tuesday morning meeting at 10:00, you know, and I've gotta, like, negotiate like I'm driving through traffic just to get back to the executive offices, you know. 45:21 I mean, that's all. But, you know, it, it, you know- All that parking, no parking spaces available. Yeah, I see. Yeah. Uh, listen, you know, the, I'm sure certain places have been very successful in their own right. 45:33 I, I would say this about, um, m- most of these, like, publicly traded companies. Most of the guys around, they're looking for the next quarter, you know, get their bonus for the next quarter. 45:42 Michael Gaughan's been doing this for 50 years. He's not worried about the next quarter. Yeah, he's not. He's worried about, you know... I mean, first of all, he, he's 83, I think, something like that. 45:51 He's been doing this a long time. It's not about the next quarter. It's a, uh, they're, we're, we're grinding all the time. And if we have a bad week, we have a bad week. Another, uh, funny story real quick. 46:02 Uh, he graduated from Creighton, and- Oh, I didn't know that... yeah. Yeah. So Creighton was playing San Diego State a couple years ago to go to the Final Four. He calls me, "Hey, who do we need in the Creighton game?" 46:10 I says, "Well, we need San Diego State for 15,000." "Geez, I really wanted to root for Creighton." I says, "Michael, for God's sake, will you just root for Creighton?" 46:18 [laughs] I says, "It's, like, what, 20 minutes of slot drop? You'll be okay. Just root for your alma mater." It's 20 minutes. "Let me worry about San Diego State." Ah, that's great. Yeah. 46:28 Uh, Then One Life is the name of the book. And again, if you go to, uh, abetterlife.com, better, B-E-T-T-E-R, Tim Lawson site, you can get all three packaged together. Yeah. Then One Day, Then One Year, Then One Life. 46:39 Uh, the great Chris Andrews, who you can follow on Twitter. I don't know how active you are on Twitter these days. No, I'm pretty active. You're pretty active. Uh, and- Yeah. Well, I'm trying to sell books, of course. 46:46 [laughs] That's right. So, yeah. Okay. @andrewssports. You staying out of trouble, though, on Twitter, like our next guest doesn't? 46:51 [laughs] I'm not in as much trouble as he gets himself into, but- Are you guys gonna be okay on the, uh, on the, uh- Yeah... segue here? Yeah. Okay. I'm just curious. What's gonna happen? Uh, [laughs] you tell me. 47:02 I don't think either one of us wanna throw fisticuffs. Yeah. [laughs] We'll see what happens. @andrewssports, the great Chrissy Andrews, my meshpucha. I love you, man. I love you too, pal. Chris Andrews. 47:11 Great being back. Great having you back right here on The Numbers Game. Fezzik is next. Fezzik Fridays on the other side right here at VSiN. [upbeat rock music]
