which is why you are primarily here today. Right. What is, uh, let's talk about this l- before we get to this book. What is the book, what is the author history that you have now? Well, I actually have four books. Yeah.

Then One Day was the first, which started [laughs] uh, when you and I used to do, well, we used to s- we started on a podcast, and we had story time.

And people encouraged me to write these things down, including Tim Lawson. Uh-huh. Who, we'll get to him a little bit later. That's right.

Uh, so I did it, and, uh, you know, I s- I still get a check every quarter [laughs], you know? It still s- it's sold really well. Such a great success, yeah. Yeah.

I, I mean, some of the checks are, you know, 80 bucks, but some of them are, you know- It's a bill. Yeah. Uh, yeah, uh, some of them, I mean, it pays for dinner one night. Yeah, it's like [laughs] that's right.

Uh, but some of them are, you know, well into the hundreds and even a thousand, something like that. But I mean, been selling for, you know, it came out in 2019. You know, so the, I,

uh, I, matter of fact, I sold two, like, in the last week personally, you know, so I don't know what they sold at Huntington or on Amazon.

Um, anyway, that was the first one, and Then, Then One Year, which was, you know, um, Anthony Curtis was my publisher, Huntington Press. He said, "You know, we did so well on the first book, well, we need a follow-up."

I said, "Well, I don't wanna do the same thing. How about a year in the life of a bookmaker?" "Oh, that sounds fantastic." What year do I pick? The year of COVID. [laughs] Which turned out to be- Uh...

I, I must say, I know it wasn't what you intended- Yeah... and it's not near, it's, it's not the hilarity of the first book. Oh, it's not the hilarity, no. [laughs] It's, it's not the hilarity at all.

But I'm so glad that you j- that you, in essence, kept a journal of that. Yeah. Because that whole book, Then One Year, I remember reading that a few years after the fact- Yeah...

and just being like, "Oh my God, I forgot that happened." Oh, I, I, I review it every now and then just to refresh my memory, and I think I told you the other day.

And I for- I think it was Texas State was playing their 10th game of the season, and that week Utah was playing their first game of the season. [laughs] Just, we forget.

See, e- even that detail, I, I guarantee 98% of people don't remember that. Oh my God. Yeah. Oh, yeah, uh, yeah, at least 98%. So this was like halfway through, you know, when, when COVID was, you know, in its midst.

It was like July, 1st of July or something like that. I sent my work to Anth- Anthony Curtis. I says, "Should I keep doing this?" He's, you know, he, you know, fortunately Anthony loves my writing. You know, God bless.

He says, "I love your writing. Keep doing what you're doing. In the end, we'll figure it all out." So we had about 180,000 words, which is a, wow. I mean, that's like Lord of the Rings, you know?

[laughs] Something like that. [laughs] He says, "We gotta cut it down to 90,000 words, 'cause I don't, m- 89,999 is what I want." So me and his editor, uh, Deke, Deke Castleman, uh, we, we just worked on it.

Let's eliminate this, eliminate that, and then, so we cut it down. I, I think, I think Anthony let us get away with 90,028 words. He allowed, he allowed the 28. It came out. Yeah.

But, you know, it's one of those deals where l- I know, like, Vic Salerno, Roxy Roxborough, a lot of other people in our business, in, in the, you know, that know what it's like to be in the trenches, they love the book.

They think it's great. You know, they think it's- Yeah... terrific just going through. I think it's great just from a standpoint of a time capsule. It's, it's a harder- Yeah...

like, the first book you could just fly through- Oh, yeah... 'cause it's so funny. This one you have to kind of read in order. You, you ha- and you also, like, it's a harder read because it's- Definitely...

it's also, like, really sobering to read back- Yeah... and you're like, "Man, we all lived through this?" Yeah, we had the election that year. Yeah.

And if you remember, we went to bed that night thinking Donald Trump was gonna be the new president, and they counted the votes. And in the morning- Yeah... it was Joe Biden was president. Yeah. There was...

And I, I wrote it all. I, I, I try not to be political in any of it. Uh, uh, but I wrote it from a betting standpoint. You know, people, people were betting on Trump overnight, you know, and then- Oh, yes...

in the morning, yeah, they found out, oh, that wasn't such a good bet. That was a fascinating betting cap- It, it really was...

betting, betting to, because the, the folks who were pounding Trump in the election voting- Yeah... it was almost a muscle memory of 2016- Right...

where, if you were, if you recall, it was Florida that was all the, "Wait. What do you mean? He won Florida? What's going on here?" Yeah. And so they thought that was happening again, and it wasn't. Yeah. Yeah.

It, it wasn't. And, uh, you know, but there's a lot of other stuff in there. Uh, but, uh, I will say this. Wh- when I wrote it, it really was kind of like a stream of consciousness.

I didn't go back and change anything, you know? And I, I wanted to do it that way. Matter of fact, when, this, that was the year that Brady signed with Tampa Bay. Mm-hmm.

And I thought, "What a foolish move that is for Tampa Bay-" [laughs] "... to sign..." But by the end- You left it in there? I, yeah, yeah. [laughs] I left it... I mean, listen, that was my thought.

A- and I do that in, it, it's, seriously, in all my books. I don't go back and change m- m- I, I mean, I change the wordings, re-edit, all that. But I don't change my thoughts. Mm-hmm.

You know, and I thought Brady, [laughs] I thought signing Brady was crazy, you know? Meanwhile, by the end, I, I bet him to be the MVP of the Super Bowl, [laughs] you know- Yeah... which I won that. You know, so yeah.

But, um, I thought that was important to do things like the way I felt in real time, you know? And like I said, a lot of people like that book that are in the business.

Outside of the business, you know, it doesn't, didn't really have, you know, the, the broad appeal of the first book.

Real, real, then a sort of inside writing question, which I'm not sure how, is interesting to others, but it is to me. When you write that many words on anything, what, what is your process?

Do you like allot a certain amount of time every day? Or do you just binge write one day and then- No... not go back to it seven days later or?

No, I, I had to keep my discipline of writing every day, but I didn't say, "Well, I have to write 500 words. I have to write 1,000 words," or some days might've been 2,000 words- Right... 3,000 words.

You know, whatever it was. Whatever, whatever, you know, uh, dictated for the day to get my thoughts down, you know, I did it. You know, but I did- You must really enjoy writing. Writing is hard. I do like writing. Yeah.

I like writing. It, it, you know, I mean, whatever it is, there's, you know, uh, different things appeal to different people, you know? Yeah. But I enjoy writing. I enjoy the whole process.

It's something that's, uh, kind of cathartic to me. So that's Then One Day followed by Then One Year. Yeah. And then you wrote a novel. I did write a novel.

Adelphos Mu, I, which I probably mistitled it, 'cause people didn't get it, but in parentheses, My Brother. So if you go on Amazon, just look for My Brother, My Brother. Mm-hmm.

And I gotta tell you, of all the things I've written, I'm most proud of that. I, I, I think it's a terrific book. It didn't get- Absolutely mistitled it.

Like the Pina Colada song, that kind of thing, where it should've been called that- Oh... instead of Escape or whatever it is? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, that, yeah. I, I mistitled it. And matter of fact, I'm thinking about...

My, my wife said, "You should retitle it, you know, re- reissue it under a different title." Yeah. In the end, uh, we've, we've kind of kicked around what we should do, and I was thinking Uncommitted Sins. Hmm.

Now, you've read the book. I read the book. I- It's the uncommitted sins that got him into trouble. I'm not blowing smoke here. I r- I don't read fiction as an adult. I don't know, my brain doesn't do it.

But I know it was you, and then I, I was like, "Oh, it's by, it's my Mish Bucholz writing it. I'm gonna read it." It was great. It was fantastic. Yeah. I really liked it. Everybody who's read it thinks it's fantastic.

Yeah. I can tell you that. And I, like I said, I'm most proud of that work than, than I am of anything else. Would you write another novel? I started one.

Um, and then, uh, you know, I'm probably like a third of the way through it. It's one of those things, like I know what's gonna happen. I don't know how it's gonna happen.

But I'm about a third of the way through it, and, uh, you know, probably, uh, after football I might get to it again and write a little bit more.

Oh, that's interesting, that you, as you're writing it, you almost can't wait to see what happens also. Well, I, I would say this, that, you know, I've, I've,

not that I took classes, but I read some things about, you know, uh, from writers on h- on their process.

And the characters, if, if, if you're a good writer, and I like to think I'm pretty good, you know, characters will take on a life of their own. Yes.

You know, you, as you're writing it, you think, "Boy, th- he wouldn't do that." And you see that all the time in movies, you know, it's get, they'll say, "What? That doesn't make sense."

Well, it kind of, uh, I, I, I kind of would say the same thing, you know? Uh, characters kind of take on a life. They, they went on a path, like, that I didn't really intend.

And the other thing in that, in that book, my novel, there's a lot of stuff, like at the end I says, "Oh, you know, I didn't even realize that." You know? And like some- Yeah. [laughs]...

there really, like some karma stuff, you know? And c- I don't wanna, I don't wanna blow it, uh, you know. Let's not spoil the book or- Yeah... spoil the book or anything. Yeah.

But it, th- there's some stuff like, oh, that, that, that makes sense on how that happened, and I didn't even realize it when I was writing it. And what is the best way to get all these books, by the way?

So whenever you see a three, you know, the wise guys take it, or maybe they're betting the money line or something like that.

So the right side, and you know, the right side loses all the time, but you know, probably, you know, 58% of the time, the right side would be the dog in that situation.

Conversely, if a number's sitting at three and a half all week and never goes to three, and once again, of course you wanna lay three if you have the opportunity. Mm-hmm. Um, that...

A- and sometimes you'll see a game that's like three and a half, the money line might be like a $1.90 or something like that. That's a strong three and a half.

That means that the favorite's the right side, you know, a- according to the sharp money.

And again, probably, I mean, you're gonna lose 40, 42% of the time playing that, but the right side is probably the favorite in that situation. Very interesting.

Well, 'cause what is... How do you encapsulate one life into one book? Uh, it's hard, you know? And I, again, I, you know, I followed Anthony's... I kept, kept this under 90,000 words.

I coulda had nine million words, [laughs] you know? Yeah. But I kept it under 90,000. Really, the inspiration for the book, what, what started me on this path, was my wife had that brain tumor. And there...

I think it's the third chapter in the book, Pamela, my wife. And, uh, wow, I mean, you have to kinda read it, but it, it's, it's hard for me to read it.

It's very touching, you know, what we went through, and that was really- You were telling me off-air the other day when- Yeah...

when we were hanging out at the South Point, you were telling me that's, like, the one chapter you can't reread. I can't reread it. And I, and, and her...

We, we were sending out an email, 'cause she had a lot of people asking. So this was, like, you know, three, four months of me sending out an email every night. And fortunately, her cousin kept all the emails.

So I had to r- I had to reread those to write the chapter, and it's hard for me to get through 'em, 'cause sh- what happened to her is, was devastating. Mm. You know? And when I...

And I, I told you, my, my writing process, the way I'll write something is, you know, e- even in my head I know it's just a draft, and then go back and add adjectives and similes and whatever.

Uh, but that one I, I couldn't do. And I knew it while I was writing it. I said, "I just have to write this as best as I can the first time through- Mm... 'cause I'm not gonna be able to go through this thing again."

And even now, I, I, I'll go to reread it and I can't get through it. You know? It's just, it's hard for me. It's really difficult. Both of you have, both of you have been dealt tough cards in, in the health department.

We, we have. Yeah. And, uh, so that, that, that was probably the inspiration. And when I started it, I started thinking, "I wonder if I could write a book on this."

And, uh, I got to about 6,000 words in that, uh, chapter a- and I said, "You know, I really, I can't make a book out of this." Do you know Mary Roach? Do you know who that is by any chance? Sounds familiar. Yeah.

She, she's written, um, some science books, but to, to guys like us who are not scientists, you know? [laughs] Right. You know? But I mean... And I've read two or three of her books, they're really good.

If, if this was her writing this book, she could get 300 pages out of it, going through the history of, you know, h- how they operate on brain tumors and etc.

By the way, she had, I don't know if, know if I mentioned it, it was a brain tumor that she had, and it was not cancerous.

And r- as soon as I found out it wasn't cancer, I says, "Oh, this is gonna be a walk in the park." No.

she's doing great now. She's doing well. Yeah. I mean, she lives her full life. Yeah. You know? And, uh, there's certain things that she has to deal with, you know, that she never fully recovered. Mm-hmm.

I mean, she, when, when she went in she was, uh, she was the retail manager of, uh, Moana Nursery. And anybody knows in, in Reno, that's the biggest nursery in Reno. I mean, she was a, an executive, you know?

And then, you know, she just, uh, you know, she couldn't do that anymore, you know? And even now there's some things, like she can't drive at night and some things like that.

You know, there's some, there's issues that, that have lingered, but overall she's doing well. So that was the inspiration that got me going. Then of course I had [laughs] my episode of, uh- Yes... you know?

I mean, in- Hey man, you were, you were- [laughs]... kinda touch and go there for a while. Oh, man. There's a picture of me in the book and you can see, oh man, he don't look so good, [laughs] you know?

Well, I also reme- I mean, not to, not to be like, eh, I, you know, too, too serious about things, but yeah, I remember you even saying to me at some points, like, you go, "Gil, if they, if I, you can just give me, if you can guarantee me 10 more years right now, I'd take it."

Oh, my God, yeah. Oh. Man, they gave me, 2017 they gave me two years to live. Yeah. And by, and by 2019, that was two years later, I mean, I always say I was in my last couple of months.

Pam says, "You were in your last couple of weeks. You weren't gonna make it any further." And I had the bone marrow transplant. You were green, man. I was, you know, in bad, bad shape. Yeah.

And now, some people tell me about it now. They didn't wanna tell me about it when you're going through it. Oh, of course. What are we gonna say then? But I've seen some guys- Yeah... with cancer which, you know...

And by the way, my, uh, MDS, the, the thing I had, it, uh, if you go look it up, some people define it as cancer and some people don't.

When I asked my doctors at USC, and I talk about them, God bless them, they said, "Well, I don't know about anybody else, but we treat it as cancer." [laughs] You know, that's...

And by the way, USC at this point, this is even before I was con- after two years you're considered cured, you know? Even before I was part of the statistics. They are now the number one bone marrow transplant, uh,

um, uh, you know, success rate in- Mm... America, which, and, and maybe the world, you know? So I was very lucky to fall into their hands. Yeah. It was, it's, and it's a painful thing also. Oh.

There's a lot of funny stories in there. Matter of fact, uh, the same guy, Barry, telling the funniest story in there, and I, it's a very short story. We had this good friend when we were living in Reno, Flash Astrin.

Anyway, uh, my, my routine, uh, for a lot of years o- on and during football season, I'd put the numbers up, you know, Monday morning, and I'd go see John Folinsky, my, one of my dear, dear friends, ran John O'Squaga's Nugget.

You know, and we'd go, and kind of like the joke in the book is we either sat there, had coffee, and bragged about how smart we were or complained about how unlucky we were over the weekend.

This was one of those unlucky ones, you know? So we're sitting there, and we got murdered this weekend. And I remember, so Johnny's sitting there.

I could see him, he's going through, like, the, the bet report, you know, all the bets. And he's going through, and I see his eyes go, like, widen. Like, "John, what's up?" He goes, "Okay, let me...

I, I, I skipped the, the, the lead here." There's one game that was a tie, and the number was right around pick all week.

And one side would be favored, and John, like a lot of us, we move off a pick quickly, 'cause what's the chance of a tie? Anyway, one one side, one the other side, one...

So there was essentially no losing tickets, and the wise guys either took plus one on one side or plus one on the other side, and the game comes tied. So John's going through, and I see him go like, "What the?"

I says, "What? What is it, Johnny?" Uh, [laughs] he goes, "Somebody bought half a point off of Pick 'Em for 50 bucks, 60 to win 50." I says, "Come on, get a..." He shows me. He goes, "Look, here it is."

I swear to God this is the truth. If this was on TV, you'd say, "This is the phoniest thing I've ever seen." Except I happened to be right there. Our friend Flash- Flash Astrin...

Flash Astrin comes in, got the ticket, and waves it right just as Johnny's doing it. [laughs] Waves it like this. And he goes, "Wee!" [laughs] Not to be confused with the, uh, with the Tony Salinas Whiskey. No, no.

It's a good, no, different story. I wouldn't put that in the book either, by the way. Yeah, yeah. Yeah. [laughs] But wee! And I mean, Johnny's turning red. He's so pissed.

Yeah, this is the old, the D, before it was the D was Fitzgerald's, and Nick and I would, you know, during our lunch break, we'd walk around town and check the numbers and maybe make a bet or two, and we were in Fitzgerald's.

You know, they had a, a, a Leroy's there, and you know, we made a couple bets, and you know, "Well, let's go hit the bathroom before we head back to the Golden Nugget." We were working at Golden Nugget.

Uh, [laughs] we walk in the bathroom. There's like a group of guys looking in the stall. Like, what the hell's going on here? And you know, a guy look, one guy looks at us.

He goes, "I, I think the guy's dead on the toilet." And looked through the crack, and geez, you know, it looks... And we kind of jimmy the door open, yeah, uh, yeah, he's dead. [laughs] Yeah, he's dead. Yeah.

"You wanna give him mouth-to-mouth? I do not, but feel free if you would like to. [laughs] I'm not giving him mouth-to-mouth. He, he dead," you know? And, uh, anyway- He did... Nick read, Nick read the...

These, by the way, these are not, I, I know somebody who works at a strip casino, and he told me a story just yesterday about, had to do with a bathroom stall and a person in there who they thought was...

I constructed my personal deal, take a fairly small salary, but to have it all on the back end, you know, if I won, and we, you know, we won a lot of money back then, you know?

You know, even with Trent Green, pretty good quarterback, but they had, you know, I mean, they were terrible the year before, if you remember. I think they won four games the year before. Then Trent Green gets hurt.

I saw Kurt Warner, and I think it wa- uh, um, it's in the book, but I can't, I, I think it was the Ravens, you know, great defensive team for many years.

He lit 'em up, and right away I'm thinking, "Man, I am in big trouble here with this bet," 'cause I mean, we had futures like this on the Rams. So that's all it took was the one game, and people just started betting it.

Yeah, and but all through, I mean, they were on the Rams all the time. I mean, it was a miracle I even got through the season. Now we get to the Super Bowl. Ugh.

And, you know, I mean, I got this much in futures I just couldn't get off, and you know, at, at South Point, we famously don't juice numbers. Right. I didn't juice nu- Explain that.

I, I would say this about, um, m- most of these, like, publicly traded companies. Most of the guys around, they're looking for the next quarter, you know, get their bonus for the next quarter.

Michael Gaughan's been doing this for 50 years. He's not worried about the next quarter. Yeah, he's not. He's worried about, you know... I mean, first of all, he, he's 83, I think, something like that.

Uh, he graduated from Creighton, and- Oh, I didn't know that... yeah. Yeah. So Creighton was playing San Diego State a couple years ago to go to the Final Four. He calls me, "Hey, who do we need in the Creighton game?"
