Transcript 0:01 The numbers told the story, they always do. He's one of those idiots who believe in analytics. This is the Numbers Game with Gil Alexander on VSiN. Good Thursday morning to you. 0:10 It is the Numbers Game at VSiN, the sports betting network, vsin.com, Game Plus, iHeartRadio, YouTube TV, SiriusXM Channel 189. Gil Alexander. Kelly Bedell- Hey... on this Thursday morning. Good morning to you, sir. 0:23 Good morning. What a great Thursday it is. We get to wake up and we get to watch Josh Allen play football tonight. [laughs] Really. It's a glorious day whenever we get to do that. 0:31 You, uh, you're a little jealous of Haile Steinfeld, aren't you? A little bit. Yeah? All right. Maybe a little bit. All right, I think you are. Brand new stadium, all the talk of the day. 0:39 All, all the poor angles in the stands. That's right. Enjoy your obstructed views. Yeah. Shaky field conditions, perhaps. Nice job, Jess Pegula. Yeah. Um- Maybe Jessica Pegula's gotta help out her dad. 0:51 Maybe, at some point. By the way, uh, w- everybody we've had on the show this, this week has leaned over in this game, between the Lions and the Bills tonight. Mm-hmm. You agree with that? 1:04 I noticed that everyone just says lean. They don't actually make a bet. I, I, I, I was gonna say, yeah, sure. The... I more... If I had to, Gil, if I had to- Yeah... pick one, it would be the over. 1:14 There's no way I'm betting the under in this. I lean a Coca-Cola after the show. Doesn't mean I'm actually- [laughs] Exactly... gonna buy one. Exactly, yeah. [laughs] Right. But they, there's a lot of leaning going on. 1:22 On the show today, by the way, Zach and Crack. Zach Cohen will join us, talk NFL Week 2, college football. I guess we call it Week 3, college football. We still do that. 1:30 Uh, and of course, the Crack Man, Bill Krackomberger, unscripted later on. In betwixt, Todd Wischnap. Wasn't on with us, uh, yesterday. Did the mega-pod yesterday. 1:39 Uh, but wasn't, uh, was, wasn't too far off the flight back from Vegas to, uh, do our show, so he's doing our show today. NFL and more. Todd's big on the more part. Mm-hmm. Never wanna sleep on that. 1:50 You never know with him. And then Michael Reardon from Right Angle Sports joins us for a live college football release. We do this every week on Thursday. Every week. Uh, we win last week? I think we did. Yep. Right? 2:01 Yep. Two and one. Two and one on the season with the, uh, live releases here on the Numbers Game from Michael Reardon, Right Angle Sports. He also wants to talk about some other things in college football as well. 2:10 Speaking of college football, before we get to anything else- Yeah, I think he's excited to talk about what, the story you're transitioning to, I believe Yeah. Um, last night out of nowhere, 2:20 LSU listed starting quarterback Sam Levitt as doubtful for the matchup this weekend against Ole Miss. Obviously the, uh, the return of, uh, Lane Kiffin to Oxford. 2:32 Now, the exact nature of Levitt's injury was u- was unclear. He completed last week's win over Louisiana Tech, spoke to reporters afterwards without appearing to be in pain. 2:41 Lane Kiffin didn't mention that Levitt was, uh, dealing with any injuries during a Monday news conference. So this comes out, LSU drops to a one and a half point favorite. 2:50 Boun- it did bounce back to two and a half point favorite after- Sore throwing shoulder... a sore throwing shoulder is what we are- Is what they're calling it, yeah... is what they're calling it. 2:58 But the, the, the line bounced back to two and a half. Now, depending on how you wanna fray this, phrase this, after lack of belief in the report seemingly. 3:06 I'll tell you how Alex Scarborough, uh, put it in the ESPN report on this. He says, "Considering the intensity of the rivalry, there is a chance the surprise doubtful listing could involve some mid-week gamesmanship." 3:19 [laughs] Yeah. So I, I, I just have, or I have a serious question about this. Mm-hmm. We all know, we all know Lane Kiffin, and we have a sense of Lane Kiffin's personality. Yep. 3:28 The notion that though a reporter would immediately include that sentence- I-... in a, in a article is pretty amazing. I agree. Because let's just play it out. Let's just say it happened to be legit. 3:41 And by the way, doubtful means you're 25% likely to play, right? This just in, special Numbers Game investigation reveals 25% is not 0%. Mm-hmm. But let's just say he didn't play. 3:54 I would think a lot of people would owe Lane Kiffin a pretty big apology at that point. Oh, sure. Like, "Uh, hey man, we're s- [laughs] we're kinda sorry we, we immediately doubted everything you said." 4:04 But it is Lane Kiffin. It is gamesmanship. There, there is something called gamesmanship. 4:10 By the way, to sh- all sh- be pointed out, the conference's reporting policy states acts of gamesmanship intended to hide a student athlete's true participation status, that's a true participation status for competitive or strategic reasons, are prohibited as is conduct that could reasonably construed as, quote, "misleading." 4:28 And then of course they could, uh, take sanctions. Penalties for inaccurate or late reports range from 25,000 to $100,000 for football and can include accountability measures per SEC, uh, Commissioner Greg Sankey. 4:39 He's got full discretion to administer penalties and appropriate, um, levies based on the circumstances. What, what's, uh, what's 25K these days? 4:46 That's like, that- I was gonna say, 20- Is that like a game check for these players? Gee. Right? I was, [laughs] I was did the little eyeor thing. [laughs] Yeah. The, uh- Yeah. 4:55 No, I, I love that you brought this up 'cause I kinda, I, I, whenever this kinda came out yesterday, I, I'll be honest, I wasn't like all over it. So I was playing catch up on this like this morning. Yeah, me too. 5:05 Me too. Last night I was. And I'm glad you said what you said 'cause I kinda read it the same way. 5:09 I was like, wow, we are immediately jumping to this is Lane Kiffin, uh, gamesmanship w- uh, you know, h- you know, he just- We had that reaction... he's fine. 5:18 I, I think that's great for you to point out because I think most people who hear us, "Oh, don't be so naive. Of course it's gamesmanship," right? But from those who have, like, done broadcasting- Right, yes... 5:27 or have some sort of journalistic integrity, you don't write that in that article. Right. Yes, you don't. There's no other coach they would write that for, so. 5:35 I mean, like you, I mean, you could almost go as far to say you, you, that guy could be putting his job on the line by including a line like that. That's exactly right. 5:40 'Cause you're right, if he doesn't play and it's like a real injury, yes, everybody o- owes them an apology. Unless it's a v- And I know everybody's rolling their eyes right now. Yeah. 5:48 Like you say, I know everybody's rolling their eyes. Un- unless it's this very open sort of, you know, laugh to the side kinda thing. Like, of course they're doing it for this. Right, yeah, yeah. 5:59 Like, like he knows from day one. Did they announce this and then someone like three seconds later on video caught Levitt and, uh, uh, uh, Lane like high-fiving or something like that? Like two, two- Like, "Hey!" 6:08 Yeah, just [laughs] Doing somersaults. Right, exactly. Uh, I, yeah, look, game of the week, it just got more intriguing. Back to two and a half though now in favor of, uh, in favor of LSU. 6:18 So we'll see Yeah, I'm interested to hear what- We'll see, we'll see if Sam Levitt shows up. I know Mike wants to talk about it. 6:22 I'm sure, I'm interested to hear what he has to say, 'cause yeah, it was, it, how did the market react, right? Oh, ooh- Yeah... new- news out. Yeah One and a half- Market- But they're like right away... 6:30 market wasn't, market wasn't familiar with any, uh, snickering behind the scenes. But like right away though, it was right back to two and a half, right? Yes, it was. Like it's off the three, though. It's off the three. 6:37 I mean, the other thing to bring up these days, how many times do we a- do we get asked or do we talk about, like, w- uh, teams running up the score for boosters? J- hey, Gil, you know what's nice? 6:47 Laying two and a half instead of three if you're an LSU backer. At what point do we... L- let's just say it w- it is all completely shenanigans. Mm. 6:54 At what point does LSU become tired of laying shenanigans with this kind of stuff, too? Like, "Okay, that's enough with the $100,000 fines, Lane. Stop, stop." Uh, a couple years. Yeah. 7:02 We'll see how ma- yeah, see how many wins he racks up. It comes down to how many wins he racks up. It really does, yep. 7:06 Uh, we have crackle on the show, so our final hour is, is, uh, all about the crack, man, so I wanna, we wanna shove in as much l- sort of betting-related detail as we can here. Uh, this came up on the show yesterday. 7:15 Obviously, we have 10 games roughly left in the Major B, l, Major League Baseball season. Some teams have nine left. I believe only the Rays have 11 left, 'cause they have a double header against the Yankees. 7:27 Um, Yankees themselves have 10 game, 10 games left. So roughly 10 games, give or take a game or two, but that's the, uh, that's the average left in the season. 7:36 And we wanted to go through some of the tiebreakers in case you were thinking of betting make misses on divisions, uh, as well. We'll break it down just real quick, division by division. 7:47 AL East, the Rays now have a four-and-a-half game lead over the Yankees. [laughs] Wow. Remember, they have a four-game set next week. We are flirting with that four-game set barely mattering at this point. 7:58 Um, if the Rays are able to stay above the four games, obviously they could even withstand a, a, a sweep. 8:04 They obviously don't wanna get in that position, because then of course they'd have to, uh, get it home in the final series of the season. But you get the idea. 8:11 Rays not only have the lead, they have the tiebreaker over the Yankees for the AL East lead. They've won that season ser- or they, th- they currently have the lead, I should say. It's 6-3. 8:20 Of course, if they got swept, that's the only way they'd lose the tiebreaker to the Yankees. So that four-game set is obviously very important. 8:27 But one of those, r- remember, there's a double header, too, and those are usually splits. So it, that even reduces the chance of the Yankees getting a sweep next week. 8:36 But anyway, as, as you should know it, for, for tiebreaker purposes, for the purpose of this conversation, Rays lead that season series 6-3. 8:43 Only way the Yankees can wrest that tiebreaker from the Rays is to sweep next week. 8:48 Um, as far as wild card teams, wild, potential wild card teams in the AL East, the Blue Jays, they win the tiebreaker over the Guardians if it happens to be a tiebreaking, uh, a, a wild card tie with the Guardians. 9:00 Now, Guardians beat the White Sox yesterday, so currently the Guardians are first place in the AL Central. 9:08 So just so you know, if, if they fell back into a wild card situation, it was with the Blue Jays, the Blue Jays actually win that tiebreaker. 9:13 Right now the Blue Jays are one and a half games behind the White Sox for the third and final AL wild card position. Blue Jays lose the tiebreaker to the Rangers and the White Sox. 9:21 Rangers and Astros now tied for the lead in the AL West. Um, tied with the Astros, the Orioles tiebreaker yet to be determined, although they have a 6-4 lead over the Orioles. The Blue Jays do with three games left. 9:36 As far as the Orioles are concerned, the Orioles are two and a half behind the White Sox. Kelly, I know this is riveting, uh, tiebreaker radio here, but you gotta know these things for your bets. Yeah. 9:44 Uh, Orioles two and a half games behind the White Sox for the third, uh, American League wild card position currently, as of this moment. 9:51 The Birds would win their tiebreaker with both the Astros and White Sox if they're in a tie for that last wild card position. They would lose the tiebreaker with the Rangers and Guardians. Just know that. 10:00 Uh, tiebreaker with the Blue Jays, as we just mentioned, still to be determined. They are two games back, but they have a three-game set with the Blue Jays still to come. 10:07 Uh, as for them, them- Ju- just great that they, you c- you could be two and a half out of the wild card and you're fifth in your div- division... Guardians win a tiebreaker with the O's, as we mentioned. 10:15 They lose a tiebreaker with the Astros, Blue Jays, Rangers, or White Sox. That is if they fell back into the wild card position. Um, don't have to worry about that Red Sox note. 10:23 White Sox currently on the outside, are behind the Guardians in the American League Central race. They would win a tiebreaker with the Blue Jays, Guardians, and Rangers. Lose a tiebreaker with the Orioles and Astros. 10:33 Don't have to worry about the Red Sox there. And then as far as the AL West teams are concerned, Astros and Rangers, they are tied. They are both 500 now. The Rangers have won four in a row. 10:42 The Astros do win the tiebreaker with the Rangers for the AL West crown. If they're in a wild card tie, they again would beat the Guardians and White Sox in the tiebreaker. 10:52 They'd lose to the Mariners, Orioles, and Twins. You don't have to worry about the Mariners in there [laughs] at all. Uh, and then the, from the Rangers' perspective, again, they'd lose the tiebreaker to the Astros. 11:01 They would also lose wild card, uh, a wild card tiebreaker to the White Sox. They'd win tiebreakers for the wild card over the Blue Jays, Guardians, and Orioles. 11:10 We could do the NL later, but that's, you gotta know these things with this few games left- Mm-hmm... because ties are very possible. By the way, head-to-head is the first tiebreaker. 11:20 Probably sh- should've started there. Head-to-head is obviously the first tiebreaker. You know what's not as obvious? The second? If, if teams in other divi... 11:27 Let's say a team in the AL East, or for this purpose, let's say, let's say the Guardians-White Sox loser is tied with, you know, the second place team in the AL West, whether it's, uh, Rangers or Astros. 11:38 It's intra-division records- Yeah... and they don't even play the same divi- in the same division. 11:43 So it would be the second place Central team against other Central teams versus the second place West team against their West record. Gil Alexander, Kelly Bidlin. 13:33 We get tweets, Speedy the book, No Emu Doug, "Could you two please discuss how the NCAA can claim," correctly I believe, "that the Michigan versus Western Michigan game was incorrectly played at the end? 13:43 But oh well, too bad now. What if Michigan is in the playoffs? We bet on this," blank, "and the NCAA says oopsie." Yeah, I mean, what is there to say? 13:52 You know, I don't know if you know this, but, uh, USC also, uh, didn't win that, uh, football championship in 2004. Yeah. That BCS National Championship, that didn't happen, even though you saw it. 14:02 It, it's just, it's, it's all nonsense in the end. But I understand what you're saying. Yeah. Like, it, it's super frustrating. Imagine how those Western Michigan kids feel. There, there's a lot, too, like... 14:10 [sighs] And I, I don't know exactly how they should handle these things, but it's the, the just get it right in the moment I guess is the answer. 14:16 But, um, you know, a lot of times when we talk about these endings of games and people get, going nuts, right? 14:21 You can usually say yeah, but you can't leap to that conclusion 'cause you don't know how it woulda played out if they had to do it over again, right? But in this one you know exactly what happened. Yeah, you do. 14:30 Tom Noff, "A big reason for field goal kickers' improvement," oh, this is a response to the Megapod yesterday, "is imple- implementation of Trackman technology into training. 14:37 Similar to golfers, kickers are using it to optimize trajectory and spin for both accuracy and distance." Also, there's, uh, different ball mechanics they're allowed to use beyond that as well. That's fascinating. 14:47 Yeah, sure is. Uh, this is, uh, oh, Jrod is replying to, uh, an Annoyed Pit Boss, um, tweet, which says, "I think these survivor contests are sneakily the secret to betting less. 14:58 Curious to hear your thoughts if you're in a contest, but I played millions past three years, Circa survivor now past two years, and I've noticed a decrease in needing to bet random games on Sunday." 15:06 I have said this for many years on a Numbers Game, that football season, because of fantasy, because of contests, um, it allows... But for, for, for those of us who played off-the-grid stock market games- Mm-hmm... 15:20 used the adjusted season win totals off the grid, all of that lent to, "Yeah, I don't really need to bet as many games," because I have just so many other things going on. By the way, I say this about parlays. Yeah. 15:30 The one thing that, you know, with Fezzik is always railing on people who play parlays. I said the one part that he's leaving out, too, sometimes is sometimes it prevents parlay bettors from losing more money. 15:41 Because if a parlay is active throughout a day, it causes them to bet less on other things they might lose on. There's all kinds of weird things we can never quantify with betting. No, it's true. 15:50 I'm just, like, sitting here listening, and I completely get it. 15:52 It's just funny 'cause I think my brain operates the other way, of just like it st- it always starts with the bets, and then whatever else I'm comfortable adding, I'll add. I'm sure everybody's different. Yeah. 16:02 But Moneygun Guzz, "Morning, fellas. I still have one golden ticket left in Survivor. I'm all in on the Buffalo Bills tonight. Let's go," he says. 16:10 And then, uh, GV New Jersey/New York, "Ol- regarding Ole Miss and the paranoia over Lane and gamesmanship, they had the FBI sweep for bugs in the football office that Lane may have left behind. 16:18 Think about how dysfunctional that relationship must have been for them to take that step. Like he's a toxic ex-boyfriend." You know what? Uh, you know what hasn't changed, Gil? This is still- [laughs]... 16:28 SEC football in the South. Ah, football. You know what? You know what has changed? There's a whole lot more money involved now. Yep. So none of this surprises me, man. I can't wait for this game. Yep. 16:39 Yeah, there's all that. Uh, real quick, uh, most wins September update. We have a s- we have a slugfest. Brewers, Yankees, Rays, Padres, Dodgers. 10 and four- Whoa... 10 and four, 10 and four, 10 and four, 10 and five. 16:50 Hope you like dead heats. Brewers, Yankees, Rays, Padres, Dodgers. Tigers, Guardians, one win back. Rangers, Pirates, Athletics, and our Blue Jays two wins back. It's a scrum. 17:02 And like I said, most, most of these teams have 10 games left. Our Blue Jays have nine left. We are, we are behind the eight ball. We really are in that. 17:09 Real quick, uh, let's take- Do, do you like a p- do you like a Padres bet right now if you had to make one? Padres are six to one. You can see the odds on the screen for those who are, who are watching. 17:19 Um- Don't the rest of these teams with 10 wins, you start to have the question of next week, like, do it, do we need, do we need more wins? [sighs] Right? Rays are four and a half clear of the Yankees. 17:30 Brewers and Dodgers- Oh, you're talking about in terms of-... got the byes... playoff position being secured- Yeah... kind of thing? Yeah, but even the Padres, uh, the, their, 17:38 their distance between them and the Diamondbacks is only getting bigger. So even they may have- Right, that's a good point... nothing to play for. Yeah. It's, what, three and a half between those two? Yeah. Yeah. 17:46 In fact- That's a good point... most of these teams will not have much to play for, all the 10-win teams, to your point. Probably, probably. Joe Sheehan's Tigers. [laughs] Joe Sheehan's Tigers. 18 to one. 17:56 Joe Sheehan has the Tigers in September. We'll see. Uh, okay, uh, real quick, the NL, the NL wild, uh, the NL tiebreakers. 18:03 I know this is not the most exciting thing in the world, but again, you do need just to be thorough with all your baseball bets. You do need to know this. 18:08 So the NL tiebreakers, the Braves four-and-a-half game lead over the Phillies. If that were to be a thing, they do win the tiebreaker as well over the Phillies. In terms of seeding, they would win a tiebreaker. 18:20 The Braves would over the Dodgers. Um, right now they would be tied with the Brewers-Cubs NL Central winner in terms of seeding. 18:29 So just keep that in mind with stuff when you're thinking, "Hey, do I wanna make a Braves future? 18:33 Well, I should probably know that they win all these tiebreakers," so that's a good thing with the, with the Dodgers and Phillies anyway. 18:40 Uh, Phillies themselves, they would win tiebreakers with The Padres, in terms of a wild card position, they would lose tiebreakers, uh, to the Braves in the division, but Cubs and Dodgers when it would come to seeding or in the terms of Cubs, in the terms of the, uh, wild card with the Cubs. 18:57 NL Central, uh, Milwaukee rolling obviously with the, uh, with the NL Central itself, but in terms of seeding, once again, they win the tiebreaker with the Dodgers. 19:05 Um, they're tied with the Braves, if it came to that, with seeding. Cubs, they, in terms of the wild card, win tiebreakers with the Diamondbacks, Padres, and Phillies. They don't lose a tiebreaker to anybody. 19:19 In fact, the Cubs in terms of tiebreakers, wild card tiebreakers, are the best positioned of anybody. And then the NL West, by the way, tied with the Braves, it should be noted. That's the one exception to all the wins. 19:29 The NL West, Dodgers obviously, uh, winning the West. Um, they would win a tiebreaker in seeding with the Phillies. They would lose tiebreakers in seeding to the Braves, Brewers, or Cubs. 19:40 Again, all they care about is one or two. Padres, three-and-a-half game lead over Arizona. We can take these last two together. That's the big thing here. 19:48 The final series of the season is a three-game set, Diamondbacks at Padres at Petco. But right now, the Padres just cruising, three and a half ahead. 19:57 In terms of, uh, other stuff, they'd lose tiebreakers to the Cardinals, Cubs, uh, and, uh, F- and Phillies. You don't have to worry about the Dodgers there. 20:06 And then the Diamondbacks, again, three and a half behind San Diego. They win tiebreakers with the Cardinals. They would lose a tiebreaker with the Cubs. Um, do we have the, uh... Do we have the, the Padres-Diamondbacks? 20:19 Oh, yeah, they're tied. That's the big thing. Padres and Diamondbacks themselves tied 5-5 heading into that three-game set at the end of the season. 20:26 But right now, Padres are like, "We, we, we won't have to worry about that tiebreaker- Mm-hmm... if we continue to have this huge lead over them." Anyway, that's, those are all the tiebreakers. 20:34 As far as tonight's game is concerned, Buffalo hosting Detroit. Do you have a play on this, Mr. Josh Allen, number one fan? Uh, I have a Dalton Kincaid prop over receiving yards for Dalton Kincaid, 48 and a half. 20:47 Got yesterday. In on that, current numbers on this game, five, it is up to five and a half most places. Five and a half on the Buffalo side after this look ahead was three, three and a half. 20:58 Uh, out to five and a half, 40, f- uh, or 54 and a half, 55, your total right now in this game. 21:04 The reason that everybody was leaning over, obviously, I should r- I should probably give the reasons for doing this, is, is pretty apparent after one week of the season, right? 21:11 Bill's put up all kinds of, uh, points on the Texans' vaunted defense- Mm-hmm... right? Allegedly vaunted defense. And the Texans themselves put up a lot of points on the Lion. Excuse me, on the Bills. 21:21 So it's kinda what you anticipate about the Bills, right? Where it was always, we said this all last year, which is like, "Hey, we know Josh Allen's great, doesn't really have a lot of help on offense. 21:30 Um, and the defense, I don't know what to think of it." But this year, with DJ Moore, right, and, uh, Dalton Kincaid looking completely healthy- Mm-hmm... man, that looked good in the first week. 21:40 And then the Lions, same deal, right? You expect the offense to be good, and then Tyler Shuck went ballistic on them- Yeah... last week. This is definitely some injuries worth noting here, mainly on the Detroit side. 21:51 This is what... This blows my mind every year in the NFL. We get to, like, week two, and it's, like, legit cluster injuries that the Lions are already dealing with. 22:00 Uh, before the season, what their offensive line depth chart had, three of those five guys will be out of this game tonight. 22:07 So you're going into a game with a deep, uh, with a, with a depleted offensive line for the Detroit side. And then reminder, both of their planned starting safeties from the beginning of the season also not there. 22:18 Add DJ Reader to the questionable, uh, list, cornerback for them. The, like, they've got issues in the secondary and the offensive line, which is not what you wanna have when you're rolling in to play the Buffalo Bills. 22:28 Which is for me, which is why I sort of alluded to this yesterday, it's either Buffalo or nothing for me in this game, because there is a scenario where Buffalo destroys them. Absolutely. 22:35 Buffalo side, Cole Bishop, questionable. Safety, Damar Hamlin will probably play. If he doesn't go, he did, he did practice yesterday, but was limited. 22:43 Um, and then a couple other- Whenever, whenever I hear Damar Hamlin's name, there's a little part inside of me that always has this little joy. Dude, he's so bad too. Like, it w- like, he's so bad. 22:53 [laughs] Whenever he's out there on the football field, I'm just like, I feel like he's missing tackles or, like- Is it, is it too soon for that? I think we've passed enough time where we can say that. 23:00 It's, there's enough time. The guy's fine. Okay. All right? He's collecting NFL checks, okay? [laughs] But he's not a good safety. He's not good. Too soon. 23:06 Um, okay, Josh Allen, home favorite in September, brought this up y- uh, yesterday. 10 and one straight up, seven and 0 in the last seven games. 23:14 And then from Steve Mackinnon, teams that with one week w- that won week one games in which 50-plus points were scored are 34 and 18 to the under the following week. Which I think that one makes a little sense. 23:27 And then there's the Cleve TA trend- Mm-hmm... which we talked about, which is lines are off an overtime game, short week away. Those teams are six and 25 ATS since 2003, and 16 ATS on the road. 23:41 [exhales] That's why the line- Yep... moved towards Buffalo the whole time. Zach Cohen next on a numbers game at VSiN, the sports betting- [upbeat rock music] A numbers game on VSiN, the sports betting network. 23:59 It is a numbers game. What do you know? Gil Alexander, Kelly Billings in the hizzy. Circa Resort Casino, Downtown Las Vegas. Uh, Megapod, lovely yesterday once again. Todd Wisnev, Will Hill, Cleve TA and I, uh, doing it. 24:13 Thanks for everybody watching it live on Twitter. Thanks for everybody. Just a incredible numbers. Incredible numbers on that and guessing lines. By the way, this is the, this is another thing I love. Mm-hmm. 24:20 I love the people on- Beating the book feed, or both of those... beat- beating the book feed. Thank you, Kelly. I love the people, "Ugh, I can't stand the recaps." Okay, y- would you like me to show you the numbers? 24:30 Um, so don't listen then if you don't like them. Uh, and then the other people who are like... What was the other one I was going with? Uh, it was the recaps and then... Oh, no, I already forgot. It already left my mind. 24:38 What was TA's second hottest take on the pod? 'Cause I haven't listened to it yet, and I'm not gonna say, I'm not gonna ask for his hottest, because I want people to go listen to it. His second hottest take? 24:48 Or second most intriguing bet to you, or second most intriguing thing he said? Oh, he sa- everything he says is intriguing. Yeah, I know. Um- Did, did he have anything to say on your, uh, kickoffs? 24:58 He agreed with Todd a lot. [laughs] Which is interesting. [laughs] Exactly. It's a bit of an alliance. I, I like that, that- I was like, "Well, this is, this is playing out interesting." 25:07 I like that that jumps out to you as interesting, okay [laughs] Chri- Chris Lee, Chris Lee Miller says, "Another awesome Megapod. However, a tired Todd," he had just gotten off the plane for Vegas. Oh. 25:15 "A tired Todd, not great radio. What's all this apologizing and not interrupting from Todd?" [laughs] It's a great point. Todd's gotta find the happy medium. 25:22 By the way, you can scan the QR code to, uh, subscribe to, uh, to the Betting the Book podcast, both Guessing Lines and Megapod on there as well. Oh yeah, the other one is when we read tweets, people get annoyed. 25:31 I'm like, "People love when we read the tweets. You're so stupid. Stop it." God, it's amazing the, the level of stupidity you will, you will see. Uh, Mr. 25:41 Clean Kicks 420, "Gil, Kelly, 2026, '27 Rams kinda feel like 2010 Miami Heat. Great team all season long, most likely one to, uh, most likely only to come up short against the long shot AFC team. Just the feel I got." 25:55 Yeah, Mr. Clean Kicks, I don't even know if they, you know, I don't know if they get, they get that far. We'll see. 26:00 Colin Murphy, "I think we should change the name of the Thursday show to Zach Can Crack The Window because Zach's wife won't let him turn on the air-conditioning," [laughs] which we'll get, we'll get an update on here momentarily. 26:11 Uh, J-Rod, "Gil, my 2027 idea for Todd is we set up the next LV," oh, "Las Vegas Invitational. I head out there. 26:17 We get the bear, Chris Falica and I also cover the game spread, and then Todd must spread the wonderful cinnamon butter from Texas Roadhouse all over his face using one of their rolls." Wow, that went crazy. And then Dr. 26:26 Van Nostrand, "When I look at field goal props, distance has gone through the roof. My question is, when did they all become so prolific? 26:31 Only thing I come up with is that the kicking balls," there's a joke in there somewhere, "are now in the team's possession. What are they doing to... with them?" Well, they, they changed everything about it, right? 26:40 In terms of the preparation- Mm-hmm... with the, with the balls, and that has obviously been the biggest difference with all of it. But- Kickers can carry it around all week. 26:49 The- They can massage it, go to bed with it, you know? The, the question becomes at what point does this in any way take away from... 26:57 You c- if you, if you return the kickoff to the 40, it's like a f- you need one first down and you're within range. It's, it, it makes for a different kinda game. I'm with you on the kickoffs. 27:06 I think these 60-yard bomb field goals are cool. You do? You like them? Yeah, I'm into it. Okay. I'm with you on the kickoffs. I... the problem is what, what... 27:13 Are we just gonna change the kickoff rule every single year? Right. Like, it's, we're never gonna get this right at this point. Well, it was the about face. Yeah. 27:18 It was from we really deeply care about the pr- the, the security, the safety of the players. Mm-hmm. We don't want anything to happen to them. And the about face was, "Eh, you know what? Go crazy." 27:28 We like to see returns, so how do we get that to happen? Go crazy. Yeah. We went too far. Yeah. Eh, safety schmafty, I believe my mom said once upon a time. Zach Cohen joins us now courtesy of the Progressive Guest Line. 27:37 You can follow him on Twitter @bettingonx. He, of course, uh, not only does football, he does basketball. He's the host of Hardwood Handicappers. He is still betting tennis. I'm taking the week off, thankfully. 27:49 Zach's still betting tennis. How you doing, Zach? Good morning to you. I'm doing well. How are you guys? How's the air-condition going over in the house? Pretty good? Yeah, so I heard... I saw that tweet or heard it. 27:58 I, I do have, like, an energy saver plan. That is what, what the, the deal is. So there are certain times of the day it can't be on, otherwise it's, like, way more expensive. So I don't know what it is. 28:08 I think it's, like, when we wake up, it goes up, and then at 7:00 PM it goes back on. Man lives in Phoenix, Arizona. This guy needs air-conditioning. He's look- hey, they're looking out for the world. 28:18 It's- The Cohens are looking out for the world, energy saver plan. You don't know- And it's only Monday to Friday, so I can have it on the weekends. That's pretty good. There you go. 28:24 Do you know air-condition largely does not exist in San Francisco? Does not exist in any home. Well, uh, well, it's so, it's so hip. Yeah. It's like a European city, you know? Yeah, it's a cool climate, perfect climate. 28:33 Uh, all right, Zach, let's start with the tennis. Let's get that out of the way. You are betting Guadalajara. What match do you have for us today? I have Sloane Stephens, uh, plus 156 against Peyton Stearns. 28:44 Stephens has just kinda played really well [laughs] over the last couple of months. Yes, she has. I'll be honest, like, I never thought she'd be back at this point. 28:50 I, I thought she was toast, and all of a sudden playing like a top 50 WTA player again. And 11 and 7 in her last 18 matches. 28:58 She has won this tournament before, and I think she's getting Stearns in the right year, at least the right time of this year, because she has been very up and down for her last couple of months. 29:06 So I think Stephens has a chance of winning this one. She still has her mobility. She's striking the ball very cleanly, and Stearns can be very up and down. She's a great ball striker, Kelly. 29:16 It's language you'll understand. Yeah. Mm-hmm. Yep. Good off the tee. Ten command. Good on approach, yep. No, I'm with you on Sloane. Like, I... we kinda thought it was over, right? And now she's playing great tennis. 29:25 Yep. So good on her. A slam winner back in the day- Mm-hmm... when she beat Maddie Keys in the US Open so many years ago. All right, to college football now. Kelly and I were... 29:33 We, we c- this caught our attention because, you know, we're here for the week and we, we get incoming, and a lot of times, you know, we get... every guest will say the same thing. We had... 29:41 we just talked about the Bills, Lions, folks leaning over. "Oh, lean over. Lean over." Um, North Carolina seems like the most popular pick in college football this week. You are on the Heels as well. 29:54 Yeah, I took UNC plus three and a half. I also took a little bit of money line. I just feel like I haven't watched both of these teams play both of their games this season, and it just looks night and day to me. 30:04 I think the Tar Heels are a much better team. Clemson, it's been really ugly. Like, maybe you could say the LSU loss is what it is. That's a really good team. 30:11 You could throw it out, but they did not look very good against Georgia Southern, and their quarterback situation is a mess. 30:17 The guy playing this week is Tate Reynolds, who, I don't know, last week did not look very comfortable throwing the football. Like, he's definitely mobile. 30:24 He's probably going to be their quarterback of the future, but I just do not like what I'm seeing out of this Clemson offense, and I think that UNC is moving the ball really well. Billy Edwards Jr. looks great. 30:34 I think they have a ton of talent at the skill positions. 30:37 Obviously not the greatest timing with Steve Belichick having resigned, but it does seem like they are dealing with something every single week and it doesn't really affect their performance. 30:46 So I think that UNC's the better team. You look at the numbers for this season, it would back that up. They're 40th in the country in net EPA per play. Clemson is outside of the top 100. 30:55 I just feel like based on what we've seen this season, not factoring in any priors, they do look like the better team to me, and I think they are going to win this game outright. 31:03 You're sprinkling on the money line as well? Yep. Okay. With the spread, also sprinkling on the money line. Let's go to the SEC in what is clearly a direct shot at Kelly Bisland. 31:13 You are taking Alabama, you are laying the points against FSU. That's the right side. 31:17 Yeah, well, in fairness to Kelly, I did have FSU in this game last year, but I just do not get the same sense of hope out of this year's team. I mean, you already had the athletic director fired within the last week. 31:28 Uh, there are reports that if Norvell loses this game and is not respectable, they're going to buy him out and swallow that, like, gigantic contract. 31:35 And I just really don't like the quarterback situation this year for Florida State. No. I feel like Daniels- No... can really run. Yeah, exactly. 31:43 [laughs] He can really run, but if his first read isn't there, there's nothing there. So I think it's going to be really tough for them to move the ball. 31:49 And Alabama defense, that is already top five in the country in EPA per play allowed. And I do think this is the game that we see Russell wake up at the quarterback spot for the Crimson Tide. 31:58 But even if he doesn't, they can run all over FSU, and I just think this is going to be a big, big win and a game that they are going to care about quite a bit because of what happened last year. All right. 32:09 Stay in the SEC. Florida and Auburn. What is your position on this game? What bet did you make? Yeah, so this one's really surprising to me. 32:17 I expected Florida to be much higher than minus 135, so it scared me a little bit how short of favorites they are, but I jumped on that one. It's actually my biggest play of this week in college football. 32:27 But you look at Florida through the first two weeks, they are number one in the country in net EPA per play. Uh, we are seeing Auburn now at outside the top 100, number 108. 32:38 The only real advantage I can give Auburn in this game is the fact that they already played a game against, you know, some legitimate competition in beating Baylor earlier in the year. 32:46 But I do think Florida is just going to be overwhelming for them in terms of talent on defense and what they have on offense. 32:53 I think that their quarterback, Aaron Philo, is actually better than Byron Brown, and I feel like Byron Brown is the one that is viewed as the more talented between the two. 33:00 So I just don't know what Auburn, Auburn really has over Florida, and I just kinda think the Gators have been overlooked throughout the off-season and what we have seen the first two tu- you know, two weeks. 33:09 I just think that was a great hire in John Summerall, and it kinda, like, got swept under the rug because maybe he's not a Power Five coach and, you know, maybe because they were linked to Lane Kiffin and didn't get him. 33:19 But I think that was a really great hire, and I think that this team is really good. 33:23 Uh, I know you may not have a play on this, but I am contractually obligated to ask you about Ole Miss and LSU, of course, given the, uh, the Sam Levitt drama also in the overnight. 33:31 What are your thoughts on this ball game? I actually do have LSU. I took it early, though, so it was minus 154, and you can get much better now. But I actually still think that they are the right side. 33:42 I just feel like, you know, the backup quarterback is a former five-star recruit that everybody in the country wanted. 33:47 And you kinda look at Ole Miss and I, I know that the expectation is that the team is going to be amped up and ready to kill Kiffin, but I just don't think that their defense is good enough for them to win a game against LSU, no matter who is under center. 33:59 Like, Kiffin has always had elite offenses. I don't think he's going to be hurting too much if Levitt doesn't play. And I'm just not a huge Ole Miss believer. 34:06 Like, I think Golding is a little shaky, and I don't know, like, he was kinda given this job. He didn't really earn it. I know he did a really good job in the playoff, but now Kiffin is gone. 34:16 These are going to be his players and his program, and I just don't really trust him. I don't think he's a great coach. D- did you catch that, Gil? True journalist Zach Cohen, not scoffing at the injury report. 34:25 I, I love that. So- Not scoffing... unlike others, you are, you are open to the possibility- Mm-hmm... that Levitt does not play, unlike others. Yeah, I'm fine with it. 34:33 I mean, it would be great if he does, but I'm fine with him not playing. Zach Cohen. Also shots at- Professional... Golding. Does he deserve the job? Oof. Professional. 34:41 Uh, more with Zach on the other side, the National Football League, including a prop in tonight's game between the Lions and the Bills. Coming back on a Numbers Game. DeMar Hamlin. Oh, DeMar Hamlin. Right, right, right. That's right. [laughs] I, I, like, I don't know. I'm kinda glad you said it how you said it. Like, it's been long enough. 36:40 It's been long enough. I'm sorry. It's been long, it's been long. It's been long enough. Yeah, it's been long enough. I'm more uncomfortable talking about Kyler Murray. Yeah. 36:45 I mean, he went into that, that, that pose, right? Like, the freeze pose after- Oh, did-... getting hit in the head... oh, my. I didn't see that Yeah, man, that always creeps me out like crazy. Oh, dude. 36:53 I, I, you know what? I actually didn't see that he did. Oh, they were, they were in the booth. They're like, "Oh, it's his knee," because of the way he, like- No... because the way he locked up. And it was like, no, man. 37:03 Like, no. No, Van Ness hit him with the arm. Mm-hmm. And then was it Bullard or s- who hit him right there? I don't remember. Yeah. But yeah, he got crushed. 37:10 Um, Jeff Levine on leaning over for the Bills-Lions game tonight. "Too much disconnect between high-powered offenses, blah defenses, and crappy new field. Does a rain-drenched field lower a total? Yup. Why not here? 37:21 I see big backs and tight ends dominating, with clock moving hurting the over." Jeff, you could be very right Just sort of reporting what the, what the- Mm-hmm... consensus was on the show this week from, from guests. 37:32 Yem, @yenjoyem, "Regarding futures bets, if you miss the best of the number, what are your thoughts on parlaying that same future with another bet to bump up the price?" I am not a fan of such a thing. You, sir? 37:44 Yeah, no. No. I'm not a fan of doing that. I mean, l- like, if you, if, for whatever... I mean, I'm not one to parlay a bunch of futures anyways, but if that's one that you were going to look at hard anyways, fine. 37:56 The, then the number, the number move on one side of it shouldn't matter as much to you, but you're still at the end of the day getting a worse number than you would've gotten. We're getting a few of these. 38:04 Justin G, "Taking the Bills tonight in survivor. There's no guarantee that I'll be alive when I could use them against a better matchup. Surviving advances the ultimate goal." Okay. 38:14 Michael Burns, "My AC has been on 70 since May. 96 in St. Louis today. Poor Zach." Zach, you know, they gotta, they gotta manage their AC over there. What do you, uh, what's your, what's your AC levels at? 38:27 Like I said, we don't have it in San Francisco. It doesn't exist. In, like, in Vegas. Oh, I don't know. I, I, I never touch it. Ah, you already... Gil's, Gil's incredible. 38:34 It's one, it's one of my favorite parts about working with Gil. Thermostat's right over here. I get to put it at whatever level I want. Gil's never said one thing. Nope. 38:40 I think once he was like, "It's a little warm in here." [laughs] And it was like 75 degrees probably. Very warm. 'Cause I'm freezing. I'm not. I'm always freezing these days. I'm impervious to climate. 38:48 I always put it at, I put it at 73 during the day. I sleep in 67. I shouldn't say that, 'cause if it, if I was, like, in extreme cold, I'd be the, I'd be the guy you eat first. I'd be the first guy you'd eat. 38:58 And then, but in extreme heat, I'd be the last man standing. Okay. Yeah. I s- pra- that's probably true. Zach Cohen rejoins us once again, courtesy of the Progressive guest line. 39:06 You can follow him on Twitter, bettingonx. Uh, name of his basketball podcast, we should mention, is Hardwood Handicappers. Uh, how many episodes of that are you doing in the off-season per week, Zach? Yeah, Zach. 39:17 Off-season, we've slowed down. 39:18 Uh, I think that, yeah, I don't [laughs] I don't know, uh, when we're going to be doing it again, but it would be Monday to Friday for the, for the season, where we do daily best bets, but haven't, you know, heard about it yet. 39:29 Okay. Um, let's get back to the NFL. Tonight, Bills, Lions. Bill's favored by five and a half. Total's 55. You have a prop for us. Yeah, I have Dawson Knox over 12 and a half receiving yards. 39:42 I know that that's not really the player that everybody's going to be jumping to bet on in this game, but I do think if you kinda look at the game that these two played two years ago, which was very high-scoring, Knox had two catches of at least 19 yards. 39:54 So one way to look at this is you can go over nine and a half yards for his longest reception. But I'd rather just take the four extra yards and, you know, at minus 110 as opposed to minus 122. 40:04 And I really just kinda think that this is gonna be a game where if you watched last week, it'd be crazy if the Lions don't throw a little extra attention at Dalton Kincaid, who went absolutely crazy. 40:13 And if that happens, then I'm sure that Joe Brady will have a plan to, you know, get Knox open in space. And Knox is also a guy that, you know, Josh Allen really f- really trusts in kinda key situations. 40:24 And I'd just be surprised if this game is as high-scoring as people think, and Knox doesn't end up finishing with 13 yards. Um, favorite play on Sunday on a side is what? 40:37 I like the Cardinals plus four and a half at minus 120. I, I think that the Seahawks are very, very fortunate to have escaped that game with a win against the Patriots. 40:46 I feel like New England just completely self-imploded. I don't think that they lose that game if Maye cuts down his mistakes by even one. 40:53 So I had just thought it was a little surprising to see them pull that one out, and I'm not exactly thrilled about the idea of seeing Drew Lock go up against the Cardinals, who do not know they're bad yet. 41:02 They had a really [laughs] good week one, and- [laughs]... you know, some of these teams sometimes play well to start the season until they kinda get beat up a little bit and lose, you know, confidence. 41:10 But I think it's too early in the year to kinda think that they're gonna do that here. 41:13 So plus four and a half in what I think will be a close game, and a game that I think the Ar- uh, Cardinals can win outright, I, I'll take that. 41:19 Let's, uh, let's take this one step further, 'cause we were, we were talking one, two, three, fours, exactas, uh, in exact finishes in the NFL before the season started per division. 41:29 Chances that the Cardinals don't finish fourth is what? Oh, man. Like, could it happen? Could it happen? And if they don't, who does finish fourth? 'Cause that's the one division- If-... where everybody 41:43 just preconceived notion Cardinals are absolutely gonna finish last, right? Sure. 'Cause it's, 'cause the Seahawks, Rams, and Niners. 41:49 I, I, if they do, you're talking about a long-term injury at quarterback for one of the other three teams. Yep. That's what I still believe. Well, we'll see. We'll see. Zach, what do you think? 41:59 I still think they'll be bottom four, but I, I think it's pretty clear even just through one week that they won't be the worst team in the NFL. No. No, what about AFC West, though? 42:09 Oh, out of C- I mean, look, I think they're, I think they're gonna be at the bottom. [laughs] I, I'd say I don't see it's possible as they- Okay... finish anywhere higher than that. 42:15 I think all other teams are, are very, very good. [laughs] Okay. Let's come back in a month- Mm-hmm... and let's ask the same question. Yeah. We'll see what happens. Yeah, you know what I'm not worried about, though? 42:22 'Cause we talked about this. Yeah, I'm not worried about their offense. It's just the defense. We love Jacoby Brissett. Love Brissett. I mean, they got what, what, the best tight end in the league- Yeah... 42:30 on the team, right? A stud rookie running back. Like, there's a lot to like on the offense. Zach, I asked this of other guests earlier in the week. I'm curious yours. 42:36 What, what do you believe, now that w- week one is in the rear view, week two is yet to begin, begins tonight obviously, what's the, what's going to be the overreaction either to the good or the, or bad, right? 42:48 Good performance or bad performance that is going to trip up bettors the most this week? I think it could be the Rams game. 42:57 Like, I still say the Rams are much better than the Giants, and the Rams kinda planned their entire travel schedule around being okay for the rest of the season. 43:05 And obviously this is a really quick turnaround, having been to Australia. 43:08 But, like, I, I still think that this is a pretty light line now that it's gotten down to seven, and I'm sure Kelly's going crazy this week because there are so many teaser legs. 43:17 But i- if you wanna go with a teaser, like, the Rams look like an obvious spot for me. I think they're gonna kill the Giants. Wow, okay. You know what, Zach? 43:23 I really haven't gone crazy with teasers this week, but you're right. You're right. There, there's a lot of jumps happening. There's a lot of six and a halfs and sevens. Mm-hmm. 43:29 Sounds like he resents the accusation also. Is, uh, there- No, no, no, I'm very okay with it. Okay. [laughs] I, I, I am, it is, it's just accurate to describe me as a heavy teaser guy. Yeah. So. 43:37 Are you, are you a survivor player, Zach? Are you in circus survivor at all? I actually am in Circus Survivor for the first time this year. Oh. Wow. Raking. I'm in like a... It, yeah. 43:46 But it's with a group of dads that I just met out here- [laughs]... and it's like, you never know, you never know which way the conversation's gonna go, and we're trying to like make the pick. 43:54 So I'm not gonna be in it strategically like you guys. It's really more for just some c- camaraderie. Zach, how are your late 40s going? Yeah. [laughs] That's right. Yeah, they are. I've, I'm aging at a rapid pace. 44:05 [laughs] But what I love is when you say, "You never know where the conversation is going," does that mean like somebody's gonna be like, "Oh, my child is like coughing up something," or like football-related, it goes somewhere? 44:13 What do you mean? I bet just football-related. Oh, okay. 44:15 Like it, it's just, it's, it's like a couple of guys that don't watch that much football, and I don't wanna like dominate the conversation, so I'm trying to take a step back. 44:22 Last week it got down to Jags or Chargers, and I was like, "Oh, why don't you guys... We- we'll take, we'll take the Jags, because I don't want you guys to have to root against the Cardinals in week one." 44:33 But that was like not the reason, obviously. [laughs] Yeah. Okay. So if you, if you were autonomous, which you, which you clearly are not- Oh, no... with a group of dads, but if you were, what would... 44:41 Who would you go with this week on one entry? I would take the Chargers. 44:46 So and I think that last week was obviously pitiful, but I, I do think that they are a good football team, and I think that Harbaugh's going to get them right heading into week two. 44:53 I know the Raiders just won like by d- two touchdowns against the Dolphins, but I think very, very lowly of Miami. 45:00 So I think it's going to be a bounce-back performance from the Chargers, and we'll kinda feel stupid for, you know, ripping on them all week. But that's just the way it goes in the NFL, especially week two. 45:08 'Cause the other question- Yeah... is, the other question, and we, this c- we came up, we didn't really couch it this way. 45:13 The week two, this is comical, right, that you phrase it this way, but if you had to do a category, week two must-win situations. Mm. You are one week into an NFL season. Yeah. 45:23 This is, based on schedule for the Chargers, this is the pr- and having lost to the Cardinals, the proverbial must-win. You cannot- No... lose this football game, right? 45:32 And I don't know if any other team qualifies- I r- I think Rams-... quite in the same way. I think Rams are close behind them. The Rams- Yeah... the Rams are kind of the other one. Yeah. 45:40 We're, we were handing them a Super Bowl trophy- Yeah... like three weeks ago. [laughs] I, I mean, I think- The Rams, if they lose this week, will, will really throw bettors off the rest of the season. [laughs] Yeah. 45:49 Oh, for sure. Yeah. 'Cause you think they'd... So you would still come back here next week after and you'd be like, "Yeah, they're still gonna be great. They're still gonna be awesome." Yeah. So that's what you mean. 45:57 Yeah, yeah. I don't know, I think that's just very interesting, like the pressure is already on- It's crazy. I know... for at least those two teams. They both happen to be the two LA teams. 46:05 The Chargers, it's like, it's the coaching staff, right? Yeah. It's Justin Herbert. It's all these narratives that have been going on forever.
