Transcript 0:00 [upbeat music] The numbers told the story, they always do. He's one of those idiots who believe in analytics. This is the Numbers Game with Gil Alexander on VSiN. 0:10 Hour number two of a Numbers Game at VSiN, the sports betting network, vsin.com, Game Plus, iHeartRadio, YouTube TV, and of course, Sirius XM channel 158. Every take, listen, we appreciate it. 0:21 Gil Alexander, Kelly Midland alongside, producer number nine, so much more than a producer, live from Circa Resort Casino downtown Las Vegas. Still to come this hour, Jonathan Von Tobel in studio, right? Yes, sir. 0:32 In studio, JVT. By the way, Bet Badge next week. Whole bunch of folks in studio next week. Um- Yeah, it'll be fun... yeah. It's gonna be packed around here. Hoping to have Spanky in, hoping to have Dr. Bob in. 0:43 Anybody else can stroll on down. Remember everybody used to come down to the South Point for Bet Badge. That was, like, super, super touched by that. So- Yeah... we don't have to make- Everything's just here now. Yeah... 0:52 yeah, they don't have to make that trip anymore. Uh, Sia Najad will join us a bit later on as well. A couple follow-ups. 0:58 One, uh, the tennis player Naomi Osaka, Naomi O- Naomi Osaka, last night for subscribers at vsin.com/picks, if you're a subscriber, a VSiN subscriber, we got her at minus 135. Do you know what she is right now? What? 1:11 Minus 172. Whoa. Yeah, I didn't notice that when the show started. Um, so Osaka is unplayable at that number, but again, it pays to be a subscriber. Now, will that CLV translate to a win? 1:23 [laughs] We'll find out in a moment. Soon enough we'll find out. But- Everybody says this run from Clara can't continue, apparently. Clara, you just like saying Clara. I do, yeah. Yeah. Clara. Clara. 1:34 Um, and then the other thing I wanted to follow up before we get to MVP and, and, uh, Offensive Player of the Year is we were talking about your, uh, your golf, and again, this is the, this is the three tournament playoff from 70 to 50 to 30, right? 1:46 Mm-hmm. How do they conduct the 30 now? 'Cause re- it used to be a staggered start. You know what I mean? Yeah, everybody just starts the same now. Everybody starts the same now. Yeah. Yep. They're starting at zero. 1:58 They just decided the staggered start made it too, like, unenter- Yeah... like, it wasn't entertaining enough. Y- y- yeah, especially when you have, like, a Scottie Scheffler that's like, "Hey, here's a 10-shot lead." 2:06 Yeah, so- "Good luck"... so for years what I mean- "Do you need a head start, Scottie Scheffler?" Yeah. You, you struggle at golf, right? Yeah, staggered start is probably not the proper term. 2:13 It- it's, the, the, the- No, that's right... the person who was first in points- Starting strokes... would start at... Well, the starting strokes- Yeah... not staggered start, at 10 under. 2:20 Then the next player would be, like, seven under. Seven. I think it was seven, and then fives. Yeah, it was so bad. And then by the t- see, by the time you got there you're like, "Well, this isn't fun." 2:28 Well, it seem- the problem is though- Yeah... is they keep, I mean, this happens in sports all the time, right? Like, I, I, I feel, yeah, I feel like it's our job just to hate on sports sometimes for being stupid. 2:37 Like, how, how many individual leagues have we called out schedule-making on, on this show? Like, four? Oh, yeah. [laughs] Like, how do you guys- Yeah... not get this right? Yeah. 2:45 Um, like, they try to fix something, but then they create this, their own new set of problems, right? 2:50 That they didn't think through, and you kind of, like, you kind of have to experience it once before you realize, oh, this is an issue. And this whole, this whole first event top 50 thing to me is gonna become an issue. 3:03 Well, uh, golf and tennis have the same problem, which is they both have four majors, right? Mm-hmm. 3:09 And that's, that's what most people care about, and they both struggle to figure out a proper way to end their calendar year- Yeah... beyond the majors, right? 3:19 So tennis has, we have the ATP finals and the WTA finals where they take the best eight players and with points, and then they have a tournament. 3:26 And they, and, and when they drum up the excitement, you can tell it's almost this manufactured excitement. Mm-hmm. And golf has struggled to figure out, how do we end our season with a bang also? 3:37 And so they're just, you know, it's like, uh, they're, they're just workshopping. They, they are. Yeah. It's just, the, the problem is, is that, okay, so this is gonna become an issue because more people... 3:47 What I also hate though is golf and tennis, right, are held to this, held to this standard of it's the gentleman's sport and everything, right? 3:53 So everybody's killing Rory McIlroy for not showing up to this event, and it's... I, I, we, we don't kill NFL teams. Or probably a bad example 'cause you can get injured, right? 4:03 But, like, still, we don't kill NFL teams who have clinched a playoff spot for sitting their starters in week 18. It's just the smart thing to do. Right. 4:11 Like, I would be, I'm, I'm kind of shocked a lot more people aren't sitting out this event, to be honest. And it's, but it's already created a problem, just the discussion about that. This'll, yeah. 4:21 So it's gonna ch- it, it's gonna change something. Um, what, what I wish though, Gil, 'cause now we've, things have changed in the past, you know, six, seven years, right? 4:30 We focus now about all the, all the broadcasts, and it's like, well, why won't they bring up what this guy's odds are to win the tournament? Now, like, right? That, that, that stuff bugs us. 4:39 What always used to bug, bug us, we don't talk about it as much anymore, but it still bugs, still bugs everybody, just talk about the money. Talk about the money. Talk about the money. 4:47 Now, all of this you're trying to figure out the best way to end a year. Yeah. 4:50 What you're really doing is incentivizing, incentivizing these guys by putting a lot of money up for grabs, but you don't wanna talk about it, so you call it points. It's considered- Right?... 4:59 it's considered gauche- Exact- yeah, right, yeah... to talk about it. So we're gonna say how it's quadruple the points- Well-... in the playoffs. Like, or it's just a crap load of money these guys are playing for. 5:08 I always say on golf broadcasts that, like, uh, it's just like, "This is for birdie, for the tournament." They should, they should always add- Yeah. How about it's for 200-... and for $5 million. Yeah. Right? 5:18 Like, for difference between whatever. For a $276,000 difference- A different-... between T4 and fifth place. Exactly. Exactly. 5:25 Um, this has nothing to do with any of it, but, but on the notion of, like, manufactured hype like what tennis and golf try to do at the end with the, the conclusion of their seasons, uh, did you see the, the Reds-Braves Bristol Speedway attempt on Saturday? 5:39 Yeah. [laughs] This was- I didn't see, I mean, I didn't watch the whole game, but I had it on for- Uh-... a few innings, and I s- the pregame I was, uh, I had it on. What's my man's name? 5:47 Uh, Davis, the broadcaster with John Smoltz? Who? Joe Davis. Um- I don't know. I don't know who it was. Is that his name, Joe Davis? It w- was the broadcaster. I may get that wrong. 5:54 But they were like, "Oh, I am gobsmacked by this setting." It was like, so they had a baseball game, the Reds and the Braves at the Bristol Motor Speedway. 6:02 It was g- it set the record, I guess, for the most people in attendance ever at a Major League Baseball game. 6:07 And the, the opening lineups, they're, like, running out like it was a All-Star Game or something like that through all the hype. And then it rained, and it all got washed away Yeah. [laughs] And then it rained again. 6:18 It was just... But it was like no one... I, I was thinking as they were, like, trying to act like it was an amazing thing, I was like, "No one cares about this. No one. It's not that big of a deal." 6:25 It wasn't, it wasn't- Yeah... that sure they should... Oh, I was thinking about the whole time when I first saw it, it was like, "Well, why aren't they having a race going on at the same time too?" 6:32 While the game was happening? Like, that would be cool. Come on. Like, if we're gonna utilize this, let's, let's u- utilize. If we're gonna use this stadium, Gil, let's, let's use the stadium. 6:40 [laughs] Here's the routine pop up to right. [laughs] Oh my God. It's a car. Uh- He got distracted by the crash [laughs] on turn three. [laughs] Peril. In peril on a routine pop-up. All right, to the NFL. MVP. 6:53 Uh, Cleve TA was on a few weeks back. He does a great football preview. You can follow him @CleveTA, C-L-E-V-E-T-A, on Twitter. 7:01 Um, here are, for nationally, for National Football League MVP, here are a couple trends, uh, that he put together. 7:06 12 straight MVP winners of the National Football League, and 17 of the last 18, have been quarterbacks, and those teams have averaged just over 13 wins per season. 7:16 No MVP in the last 25 seasons came from a team with less than 11 wins. Since 2009, no quarterback has won MVP on a team with playoff odds worse than plus 315. Talking pl- pre-flop here. 7:28 Matt Ryan, um, 2016, I guess was the plus 315. Yeah. Cam Newton is the only MVP to come from a team who won less than eight games the prior season. So that's a couple parameters. 7:42 I would add this, and this is also from the Cleve TA thing, which is when it gets to advanced metrics, EPA per play, okay? 7:50 EPA per play, um, that is also, by the way, expected, uh, points added is what EPA is for the uninitiated. 7:58 It, it quantifies, EPA per play, how much a play contri- um, a play contributes to a team's score relative to the situation before the play. 8:06 Basically, it estimates the points a team, uh, is likely to score based on factors like field position, down, and distance. 8:12 So no quarterback the prior season has ever won the MVP, uh, with less than a positive EPA per play the previous season. I think Lamar Jackson had right at even was the lowest to then win an MVP. 8:28 So the 18 quarterbacks that qualify for that this year, Allen, Lamar Jackson. So Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson, Jared Goff, Kenny Pickett. I know, not everybody at once. Baker Mayfield, Tua. Kenny Pickett. Tua, Purdy, 8:44 Jayden Daniels, Joe Burrow, uh, Love, Hurts, Penix, Mahomes, Herbert, Murray, Darnold, Stafford, Fields. Fields is the lowest. If it ain't one of those 18 guys, they aren't winning MVP according to that. Okay. 9:00 What's your pick? It's still the top three guys, right? We can talk mumbo jumbo all we want. Oh, I, yeah, I would- It's still Allen, Jackson, or Burrow, or Mahomes. It's one of those four guys, right? Yes. For MVP. 9:11 Yeah, I mean, uh, like there's... I'm seeing 6/1s on Josh Allen. I'm, I'm get- I'm getting close. By the way, I'm, I'm very, I'm pretty much done. I think I'm done. 9:21 I'm doing, like, my third laps around each division right now, Gil. I think I'm pretty mu- I'm done with NFC East and AFC East, and there might be some added bets to come. 9:30 But man, I, the, the Bills I'm going to be adding multiple bets. Um, I'm kind of waiting for some of these, I think, still to be posted or see if some of these shops post, but I'm gonna end up playing... 9:41 I already bet 'em to have most wins. I'm gonna end up playing over, over a win total too. I haven't blocked that in yet. I'm gonna play them as the last undefeated team as well. That's 5/1 here at Circa. 9:51 They've got that Ravens game to start, and then it's a real soft schedule. Been considering Josh Allen MVP at, like, 6/1. The only problem is, is if this all kind of goes the way I think it's gonna go with Buffalo, 10:05 is there a chance that they, kind of like we've seen out of Lamar in the past, "Hey, it's the regular season. Save the legs," right? "We don't wanna risk injury"? Hmm. I don't, I don't know. 10:15 That's kind of in my head, so that's why I haven't pulled the trigger yet. But I, I... Man, that guy doesn't get hurt. I think 6/1, uh, uh, MVP price on, on Josh Allen is pretty good. 10:24 Yeah, plus Burrow could put up with... If their, if their defense isn't good in Cincinnati, and Burrow's, again, they're, he's playing all preseason trying to get, uh, a better start to the season for the Bengals. 10:34 If he puts up just monster numbers and the Bengals win that division, that's a, that's a pretty interesting play. Uh, Cleve's play, Jordan Love. Jordan Love, 20/1. I don't, I don't hate that. 10:46 I, I, I'm still very much on the fence with, like, I have no idea how good Jordan Love is. He's got him at 25/1. I should be accurate with that. Like, he's good. Yeah. He's shown, he's shown glimpses of brilliance. 10:58 I, I just don't... It... Does he belong in that next tier yet or not? I don't know. Yeah. But I get what y- y- in terms of 11:05 there aren't many players that we don't really know their level at, you know, yet at this point at quarterback. He's still one of the few that we, as you just said, we don't quite know what we have yet. Mm-hmm. 11:18 We think we know. We don't know precisely. So he is one of the few options there that's a bit of a longer shot. 11:24 By the way, uh, Cleve also said, "If you really wanted to go long, really wanted to take a flyer, it's Penix at 50/1." Let's have some fun real quick. 11:33 Would you rather have, would you rather have Jordan Love or Justin Herbert? Jordan Love. I think I would too. Yeah. Oh, don't start with your Herbert thoughts. [laughs] Don't start that. 11:46 We'll do offensive player of the year a little later on. Uh, Sia Najad, golf and football next on The Numbers Game. You don't even have to watch it. I don't care. 13:52 Did you just wedge a Long Shots podcast- Hey, man... in? I said while you're on the YouTube. While you're on your, our YouTube, man. It's there. 13:57 Did you, [laughs] did you solicit a positive rating for a golf podcast- I said, I didn't-... while we're talking about Survivor? I didn't even actually promote watching it either. I just said leave a rating. 14:05 Do you know, you know how stupid I am? 14:07 In the history of Beating the Book podcast and Betting Dork, I don't think one time, not even once, did I have the presence of mind to ask for a rating or a pod- or anything like that, which is what everybody does for a- It's, it's every podcast. 14:20 Yeah. You set yourself apart then. Oh, is that what I did? Yeah, yeah. Mm. You were the cool guy, you were the cool ones. 14:26 I told Todd the other day, I told Todd Wishnow I was like, "Yeah, you know what, you know what I got to say about you I've never said to you before? You set this podcast apart." There you go. 14:32 In a, in a glut of podcasts on football, Todd, you are the differentiator. It's true. You think he said, you think he said, you think he said anything to me afterward? No. He was like- He just- "Anyway, Gil"... 14:41 just damn straight walked away. [laughs] He's like, "When are we playing tennis again?" Um, okay, so Circus Survivor, check it out. The Quest for 14.2 Million. I can't say it enough again, uh, Stormy is fantastic. 14:51 Samich and Brown are fantastic. Um, Tim Murray prominently featured from the VSiN crew as well. Uh- Timmy... some others, uh, like, like myself have little, uh, we have cameos. 15:01 Mitch and Paul have cameos there at the beginning. Kelly Bidlin does not. I haven't been seen in the back yet? Not yet. Okay. Uh, we got tweets of Beating the Book. 15:09 Jacob Ellis at, uh, Wapezi Capital, he said, "I'm holding a Yankees to miss the playoffs ticket at plus 630. The last 13 games of the regular season for them are against sub-500 teams, which is a bit scary. 15:19 Twins, O's, White Sox, O's again." Talking about the Orioles. Uh, that's why Jacob, I was saying earlier, I was like, "I'm not so sure they miss the playoffs. I'm not. 15:29 As bad as they are, good God, are they bad in the field and, and, uh, on the base paths. But, uh, I just think that there's a world here where they turn things around." 15:38 Um, Trip Tepper talking about the tennis players getting, uh, incoming from gamblers, and the ladies specifically getting a lot of hate when they lose matches, said, "Players reading comments on social media is 100% a voluntary exercise. 15:53 Tennis players can stop reading mentions if they want to avoid negative content. If tennis players are being verbally harassed at a tournament, security can address it." All right, Trip. 16:01 I don't disagree with- I don't disagree with any of that... almost any of that. No, I don't either. Uh, let's see, and this is from, uh, Todd Bubba Horwitz. "Great quote from you, Gil. Quest 14.2 million. [laughs] What?" 16:12 Okay. Uh, and then, uh, let's see. Was it Jesse Welch? Well, I'll have to go read that one, Bubba. [laughs] Oh, no, he's just, he's just quoting what I said. Okay. 16:20 [laughs] And then, uh, yeah, he says there was no big, no big deal, um, on that. I just don't like, [laughs] it's like, okay, I, I get it, I cursed. Like I'm, I'm ridiculous. I'm a ridiculous human being. Yeah, you are. 16:29 For God sakes. Uh, ladies and gentlemen, Sia Nejad joins us now from CBS Sports Line. You can follow him on Twitter @sianejad, S-I-A-N-E-J-A-D, if you want it spelled out for you. 16:41 And he's always coming to us from the DMV. That's what the kids call it now, District Maryland and Virginia, not your, uh, Department of Motor Vehicles. How you doing, Sia? [laughs] I'm doing well. 16:51 I, I want, I want Kelly to know I just went to the VSiN YouTube page, and I hit the like button on the latest Long Shots episode. Ah, there we go. [laughs] Thanks, Sia. Thanks, Sia, appreciate it. You're welcome. 17:00 Sia, don't encourage- There's not a lot... don't encourage him. [laughs] Don't, don't, don't do that. Um, okay. Uh, should we do golf first? Uh, let's do golf 'cause I, you have a bunch of football. 17:09 Real quick, though, on- Mm-hmm... golf. It doesn't have to be real quick. Uh, what are your plays this weekend? How do you look at this? So, you know, I'm backing some guys that, that I don't normally back. 17:20 I think it's an interesting outright opportunity, Gil, without... Well, I sh- I'm saying without Scottie Scheffler. I very matter-of-factly bet the without Scottie Scheffler market. 17:28 I've been doing it for quite some time, and it's been a very good thing to do. So I'm betting that market in the outright department, uh, this week at FedEx as well. 17:36 But the other thing I'm considering here is that Rory McIlroy's not playing, and I do think that opens up the board quite a bit to, like, the next 10 or 20 guys that I think are all viable to win this tournament. 17:46 So here's what I'm doing. I'm taking Tommy Fleetwood in the without Scottie Scheffler market at plus 1800. 17:51 I'm not a Tommy Fleetwood guy, but again, if I'm boxing out Scottie Scheffler and if Rory's not gonna show up, I do think Fleetwood could come into second place here. I love the plus 1800. 18:00 I mean, Fleetwood's been very good. Last year at the FedEx, he was, he led the field tee to green, first of all. He lost eight strokes putting, which is, like, unbelievably embarrassing and horrific. 18:10 But there is a sample size of him doing really well with the putter. The year prior at the FedEx St. 18:14 Jude, he was, let's see, T3, and he gained over five and a half, he gained about five and a half strokes with the putter. 18:20 So I just think he's coming into really good ball striking form, really good course fit, and clearly from a ball striking standpoint, loves it here. 18:26 Another guy that loves it here, who I'm also betting in the without market, is Viktor Hovland. But here's the tricky part I'm betting Hovland in the without Big Four market. 18:35 That Big Four actually includes Tommy Fleetwood. It's Scheffler, it's Fleetwood, it's JT, and it's Xander. This actually gives me the opportunity to scoop and hit both of these bets, but I'll get to that in a second. 18:45 Hovland at 25 to 1 in that without market. In some places it's 22 to 1. 18:49 This guy led the field ball striking last year, Viktor Hovland, and he was fourth tee to green, and I think that's important to point out because people usually fear the around the green play for Viktor Hovland, and while he has lost around the green, each time in the last three years it's been very minimal losses. 19:03 And oh, by the way, he's gained with the putter in all three of those turns over the last three years. So a great ball striker, great tee to green here. I mean, obviously coming in with good form. 19:12 It's been a little shaky, but we know he's won on tour this year as well, so he can pop. And then finally, Sam Burns in that same without market, the without Big Four. That's also 25 to 1. 19:21 Again, what I'm trying to do here is hit the Fleetwood bet. 19:25 I, I'd love to hit any one of these three bets, but I'm trying to hit the Fleetwood bet, and I'm also trying to potentially, if Fleetwood actually comes into second place or first, potentially hit this Hovland and Burns bet at the same time. 19:35 Okay. And, uh, first-round leader as well, Tommy Fleetwood? Yeah, fir- first-round leader, we're doing the same three. This is a, you know, a 69-person field. 19:44 I, I just, I just felt more compelled here to not play the wave advantages or morning versus afternoon. So I'm actually taking these three guys at 30, 35, and 40 to 1, and I'm adding in a sprinkle on Chris Kirk. 19:56 A little, a little bit of a long shot. I had him outright last week, actually. He was the first-round leader here last year. So I like Chris Kirk at 60 to 1. I'm adding him to the mix. That's four first-round leaders. 20:06 Okay. Uh- I'm with you on Kirk and Hovland, Siya, i- in the account. I'm with you. Excellent. Let's go. Let's go to the, let's go to the NFL. My brother's in town- Mm-hmm... Siya. Seriously. 20:16 So I go, "Hey, how you doing?" For the first, the first moment I see him. "How you doing?" He goes, "I'm really worried about Terry McLaurin." [laughs] That was the first words out of his mouth. 20:24 What is your take on this, Terry McLaurin's hold in with the Washington Commanders? My take is that he's not going anywhere. 20:32 I mean, I, I am seeing speculation about what teams and certain trades and discussions, but I don't think Terry has any intention of going anywhere. 20:39 I think these are all poker movers by, uh, poker moves by him and his agent, and, and they're appropriate poker moves. 20:44 I understand where Terry McLaurin is coming from, but at the same time, I understand where the Commanders are coming from. This is not a league where you necessarily get what you want. 20:52 This is a league where good organizations make good business decisions regardless of, of who you are. 20:57 So I do think there is going to be a time within the next, hopefully week or so, where these two parties meet in the middle and McLaurin gets a certain amount of guaranteed money over, let's say, three years that, that he is happy with, that's palatable to him, but the Washington Commanders don't overspend on a receiver that's about to turn 30 years old. 21:13 That's pretty much my take. That's been my take from the beginning, which I, I thought was pretty level-headed also. It, it's just, I think it works itself out. Uh, I would hate to see him in a, in another uniform. 21:22 I don't expect him to be in another uniform here on this next deal. Uh, okay, to a couple of your bets. 21:28 Just sort of anecdotally, Siya, on this show, we've, uh, we've heard a lot of love for the, a lot of late love for the Tennessee Titans. Uh, you don't quite see it that way, correct? Yeah, I, I don't understand the love. 21:40 Uh, first of all, I think Cam Ward is gonna have, like, significant growing pains. And, and for the record, I, I liked Cam Ward at Washington State, uh, you know, enough. I, I liked him at Miami. 21:50 But if you watched him at Miami, there, there was a lot of poor decision-making. And listen, this guy has a great work ethic. 21:55 He's gonna get it, and after maybe his rookie year, maybe in his second or third year, like, things are gonna fall into place, particularly when they actually give him skill position players. 22:02 But, but the reality is, I think the growing pains are going to be severe for Cam Ward, and I, I think he's going to get caught, uh, wi- with, you know, just not really being an NFL player quite yet and making some poor decisions, especially when you... 22:14 I mean, his offensive line I think is okay. Uh, but outside of that, the skill position players aren't there. I don't think this defense is very good. I don't think they had a very good off-season. 22:23 Uh, I look at their schedule, and yeah, they're in a somewhat weak division, but I don't see them winning a lot of games. I, I'm actually kind of stunned this win total went from five and a half to six and a half. 22:31 I like the under, and I wouldn't be afraid to take an alt under of five and a half because I don't necessarily see them getting to six wins. 22:39 Okay, and then, uh, some s- some footage of Tyler Shuck at, uh, the Saints camp just wildly missing receivers [laughs] has, has gone around. Uh, it ain't pretty. Uh, you are under on the Saints as well? 22:51 Yeah, I mean, Shuck's in a bad spot. First of all, he spent, what was it, seven years in college football- Yeah... 22:56 thanks to a variety of different factors, but he still doesn't have a ton of experience in terms of, like, what you would think he would have being in college football for that long. 23:05 But the experience we've seen, he's not e- he's not exactly an accurate thrower, and you're putting him into this situation where, man, this team is gonna constantly be on defense. 23:13 And what I mean is that the offense is gonna be on defense because they're gonna have to throw the ball, and you've got this quarterback that, that is just not ready to be in the NFL. I'm not sure he's ever gonna be. 23:22 I hope he is. Seems like he's pretty good. They drafted him pretty high for a reason. This defense is not good, period. This defen- front seven, the back end, it's just not a good defense. 23:31 You can run all over the New Orleans Saints. I, I, you know, offensive line I think is okay. Alvin Kamara, you got Olave if he stays healthy, Rashid Shaheed if he stays healthy. 23:41 But I, I, you know, you look at their schedule and it's like, oh yeah, this is a pretty easy schedule for the Saints, but- Okay... I don't know how you can characterize a schedule as super easy when you're- Yeah... 23:50 the easy team on everybody else's schedule. Thank you. I mean, that's the reality of the situation. Thank you, Siya. And again, they're in a bad division. I get it. 23:56 [upbeat music] A numbers game on VSiN, the sports betting network. The college football season is almost here. Gil Alexander, Kelly Bidlin, and JVT about to join us here. 24:44 Just wondered before, uh, we bring in John in, or if John could chime in on this. 24:47 Uh, for those who missed it, ESPN acquiring the NFL Network and other National Football League media assets, including the linear rights to the league's popular RedZone channel in a deal that will see the NFL get a 10% equity stake in the All Sports network, announced, uh, last night. 25:02 And ESPN will also acquire the NFL's fantasy product and merge it into its existing platform, making ESPN Fantasy Football the official game of the NFL. JVT is here. John, does that move your needle a little? 25:12 Uh, only if, uh, it is no longer going to be, even though I don't watch it that often, commercial-free football on RedZone, right? Like, that's the big deal. Oh, oh, you didn't hear. 25:21 Kendrick Perkins is the new host of NFL RedZone. [laughs] Oh, yeah, right. I was gonna say, or Stephen A.- [laughs]... or, you know, Mike Greenberg all of a sudden- [laughs]... is gonna come on every 20 minutes. 25:28 Um, that's my biggest concern. Screw journalistic integrity. It's 2025. We're past that already. Yeah. Uh, I just wanna make sure that it is still, you know, what is it? 25:35 Eight hours of commercial-free football or whatever he calls it. Well, I guess I haven't thought about that 'cause I haven't heard anything differently. Yeah. And we, it's- Scott Hanson says he is the host again. Yes. 25:44 They can't add commercials. No. People would- Well- I will lead that riot across this nation. I will say, though, this is very close to football season. This year, he's still the host. Mm. This year- Yeah... 25:54 it's still commercial free. Talk to me again for the 2026 season. You imagine Perk slowing that thing down? [laughs] "Let's go to Cincinnati." [laughs] It's just like, okay, let's do this. 26:04 J- he just put a thought in my head I'd never once considered- What?... that, like, commercials would, might be added. Yeah. I would, I would... To RedZone? Yeah. Oh, brutal. You can't. 26:13 They would- There's no way that ever happens. Yeah, Kelly, you, you- You will ruin it completely... imagine a g- And if they do, I will lead the protest from coast to coast... 26:19 I could, I could, I could do it for you right now. A golf-esque break-in where they just pan over to the right. Oh, and then the screen goes to red. 26:24 So you're gonna have your screen with your games, and they're gonna do a 30-second commercial of, like, State Life or whatever it is. Oh, really. Liberty Mutual, and then pop right back in. Let the revolt begin. Yep. 26:33 I'm telling you, it's gonna happen. I'm gonna go nuts. And it's gonna be Jalen Rose and Jacoby. JVT's been here for two minutes and he's already pissed you off. [laughs] Yeah, that's right. That's right. Uh, all right. 26:42 College Football Guide. I just talked about the College Football Guide. We'll get your thoughts on FL- NFL preseason momentarily here, John, but we just talked about the College Football Guide. 26:50 Uh, you were involved in this as well. Um, is there a, a [laughs] is there a bet here that, uh, you like above all that you've made? Uh, I mean, there's a couple. I, I've been very pro Utah. 27:02 I think I've shared that with you guys. Yes. You know, I bet them to win the Big 12 as opposed to make the playoff 'cause I think that's only a one-bid league. 27:07 Uh, I have, uh, connected that with Devin Dampier to win the Heisman at about 60 to 1. I heard you talking about Devin Dampier- Yeah... the other day. You're, you're very bullish. 27:15 Yeah, so this goes back to last off-season where Tim has actually admitted on the air, he was like, "Dude, stop talking about this New Mexico quarterback. Like, nobody really cares." 27:21 [laughs] I'm like, "Dude, just, just watch. Like, he's got some, he's got some spice to him." And then sure enough, runs for over 1,100 yards, accounts for over 30 touchdowns last year passing and rushing. 27:29 And I, I think when you look at now going to an offense that has 10 returning starters back, an offensive line mostly intact, a, a team that has been desperate for a quarterback play since Cam Rising got hurt in 2023 at the beginning of the season, I think Dampier's set up really nicely to have a strong season. 27:44 And I think a Big 12 that, uh, it's not gonna be a shock to anybody, really does have some upward mobility. 27:48 Like, all of these teams, throw them in a hat, pull one out, and I tell you, "This is our Big 12 champ," there's not gonna be that many that would surprise you, uh, in that regard and in that exercise. 27:57 So I think that they're really wide open to potentially do this. A- and I think the world, again, of Dampier, and Whittingham has an experienced team. Seven guys coming back on defense. 28:06 That, I think, is going to play a long way in this whole entire league. So I'm a big Utah guy. And again, I mean, the odds would point out what I'm talking about, right? Yep. I mean, look at these teams. Looks wide open. 28:15 Yeah, right. [laughs] Yeah. 28:16 K State all the way down to, to TCU, we're talking about a difference of plus 550 to plus 850, and even then, there's not that much difference between them and Iowa State, which brings back Rocco Becht and some others. 28:24 So yeah, I think that this is a wide open conference, and I, I'm willing to put my flag behind Utah for that. Not to, uh, put you on the spot, do you have a Heisman play? 28:32 Uh, outside, so Devin Dampier, uh, is one of them. Yeah. And then, um, my chalky play, 'cause I like to have one I like, you know, to lead horses, Jeremiah Smith for Ohio State. Me too. I, right? Like- Yeah... 28:41 the narrative's there. If it is the red shirt Julian Sayin, who I actually think is gonna be good. You know, I went back and watched the spring game. 28:46 He showed some real pop, and it, and it looked like it was running the offense relatively well. 28:50 But the narrative of not only what if they beat Penn State, what if they go through and only lose one game, go undefeated, and Jeremiah Smith's incredible, not dragging along, but for lack of a better term, doing that with a red shirt freshman quarterback in his first year as a starter and putting up some really monster numbers. 29:06 I think Smith's gonna be in a really good place to potentially win this. And look, I think there's a chance, too, you look around at the top of the Heisman Trophy, I... This might shock some people. 29:14 Gil, Arch Manning might not be that great. That is- Right? Like, it's, it, like, it might happen... oh, dude... and I don't think he's gonna be a bum, but- Yeah... 29:20 we have seen a lot of times the highly regarded guys come out and not get off to the hot start. Who knows what's gonna happen there. 29:26 Uh, Garrett Nussmeier for LSU, that could be a team that actually ta- I, I think highly of LSU. Also wouldn't be surprised if they lose three or four games. 29:32 So, like, I think that there is a spot where there's no dominant quarterback here that would push him aside, and he's gonna be in a pretty good spot to win this award. 29:39 Uh, w- I, I heard one of the most comical pushbacks on Nussmeier, like, a week or two ago. The way it was said, it was so simple, but it's so... It's just tr- kinda true these days with college football. 29:49 Someone was like, "Yeah, he doesn't run though. Like, he doesn't run." Like, as simplistic as that is- Right... it is such a big deal when we talk about Heisman Trophy and these quarterbacks. 29:56 Like, the ones that run already have such an advantage. Yep. 30:00 The, uh, the two players, and this applies to their teams as well, that I've heard the most sort of back and forth on, Drew Aller specifically at Penn State- Yeah... Carson Beck at Miami. 30:09 What is your take on either or, or both of those two guys? 30:12 Uh, I think Drew Aller's going to be great, but I also think he has a two-headed monster in the backfield that they're going to lean on, and he's not gonna put up Heisman numbers Uh, you know, when you look at some of the numbers that you'll probably need, you know, we talked again to invoke Dampier one more time. 30:24 When you're talking about rushing for 1,100 yards, accounting for over 30 touchdowns, um, those numbers could v- get better at Utah. 30:31 Those are somewhat video game-esque numbers that I don't think Aller's going to need to put up. We know what James Franklin likes to do. 30:37 Uh, they're going to, for lack of a better term, I, I think just kind of sit on it, park the bus in a lot of these games and just use their two-headed monster, and then maybe Aller has to open it up in some of the bigger games. 30:46 So I don't, just don't think he's gonna be in position to win it. As far as Carson Beck's concerned, so I'm, I, I am a Carson Beck guy. 30:52 Like, I thought, Newmans and I had a bet that he was gonna be a first round pick before his last year in Georgia, then he flames out, stays in college, goes to Miami. 30:59 He's got a good offensive line around him, he's got good running backs behind him, but they're replacing their entire wide receiver corps, and I don't know what that looks like for this offense overall, and that might lead him to struggle a bit. 31:10 Um, so I don't think that I would be running to the window to bet Carson Beck. I'm also not a Cristobal guy. Like, I look at the schedule- Yeah... 31:16 and I can see a situation where you're getting out, you're heading to Louisville, or excuse me, you're, you're hosting Louisville on October 17th. 31:22 You already have two, maybe three losses to your ledger when you talk about Notre Dame, Florida, and who knows what happens when you go to Florida State. Right? All right. 31:28 Mario Cristobal is the, the instant counter to anything Miami. Yeah. I'm not a big- Yeah... Mario Cristobal guy. You are not alone, sir. Yeah. Uh, okay. 31:36 NFL pre-season, week number one, three games Thursday, three games Friday, many more games on Saturday. You're a pre-season betting guy, correct? Love it. It's so much fun. Yes. Yeah. 31:46 And, and because the, we talked about it extensively yesterday, for those who missed it, but the edges for, for anybody who thinks it's a degenerate activity, it is hardly that because you will never find the movement in these lines on the sides, uh, that you will during the regular season. 32:01 It all comes down to information. We don't know the motivations or the players playing in the way that we will know that for the regular season. So you have fired left and right here. 32:12 How many of these are still available? What do you got? Uh, no, well, so here's the thing. Zero? [laughs] None of them are still available. Look at the CLV. 32:17 [laughs] Um, but here's the, I mean- You got so many tickets for the CLV store, man. No, dude, it's great. You're gonna get that giant panda. I can't wait till they all lose out. 32:24 [laughs] But like, you know, here's the thing, and, uh, this is why I think there, there's at least a little bit of value in just showing these, 'cause this is what we're talking about, right? 32:30 Like, if you're really just sitting back and paying attention, and there's a few of these I don't, for, I, I don't really feel too bad about, right? Like, so the Bengals, for example, at minus 105 on the money line. 32:38 That was up there for a while. Ah. And I'm sitting there. I, I made the point on- I'm so with you on this... dude, so I, I, I filled in for Tim on Sunday, right? Yeah. Six and a half point favorites buying us out. Right. 32:47 On Sunday, I played a clip from Joe Burrow on Wednesday- Yes... saying to the media, uh, screaming, "I want to play in these pre-season games." We've kind of been talking about it all summer. Yeah. Yeah. Yes. Yeah. 32:59 And then Ph- and then Philly opens up as a two-point favorite- Yeah... and it kind of just, like, trickles in the Bengals direction, and I'm like, "What are we doing here?" 33:04 Like, we know what's gonna happen, and then sure enough, we get the official news, all that kind of stuff, really move in one direction. 33:10 So that, uh, I will say, 'cause I think this is the interesting aspect about pre-season betting, the, the Lions, for example- I think it's the funniest one to me. Yeah, yeah... so this is a good story. 33:17 So I literally just had TweetDeck up the other day, and I'm sitting there doing some work, and I see on my column, Easton Stick's gonna start. I was like, "All right, I'll bet the Lions one and a half." 33:26 Like, I don't know if this should really move that much because who were we expecting to start for Atlanta? 33:30 But sure enough, you just get the info, you bet it before the market can see it or move, and then now what's, what's Detroit right now to, in this game? Like four and a half? They are four point- Yeah... 33:37 four, four and a half point favorites. Yeah. Like, like, that's kind of what it is. But, but- It's a little bit of luck as well- Yeah. They-... if you're just sitting back and waiting... 33:43 based off of Atlanta Falcons news that, guess what? Their starting quarterback's not gonna play in the first pre-season game, and their ancient backup, uh, who they've had issues with- Yes... is also not gonna play. 33:53 Which has a $100 million price tag. [laughs] Right, like that is the- Like, he's not gonna play. Yeah, yeah. Like, maybe a little different from the Bengals. Like, what were we expecting? 34:00 Well- That's exactly what we were expecting, and the market moves four points... so it is gonna be interesting. And real quick, like, we actually saw a little bit of that last week. 34:05 It corrected itself, but when it was announced that Herbert wasn't gonna play, the market moved, like, a point in favor of the Lions. It was like, "Why? [laughs] It's a Hall of Fame game. What are we expecting here?" 34:12 It, we made the point yesterday, 'cause there is a sample of, like, 400 plus games where lines have moved in pre-season over the last stretch more than a point. Yeah. And even if you're after the steam, you hit at 58%. 34:26 So, and we, I, again, I would say this about nothing else in sports betting, you wanna get ahead of the steam like JBT did, but this might be the one activity where these still might be good based on that history. Yep. 34:37 Just wanna say that as a cautionary, but yet a, a, uh, a historical public service announcement for you. Thank you, John. Appreciate it. You got it. Money Moves coming up at the top of the hour with JBT. 34:49 In between now and then, we'll recap all of our bets on a numbers game. That's next right here at VSIN, the Sports Betting Network. Back in his normal chair. 36:14 We got a tweet about that, by the way. Had to check my spot. JasonH11. Good. "Yo, question to Kelly. Do they intentionally bring in the kiddie chair for Kelly whenever you add another person to the desk?" 36:24 See, man, this is why I don't like it. This is why I usually go to the back. You'd think Kelly would have more pull around there than he does. Sorry, Bedelon. That's what he said. 36:31 No, it's just we, we, we got, we got two, we got two straight of a desk. Needs to be curved more Prime time. 36:36 Cow- cowboys_one, "Yo, if your little buddy Kelly's leading a nationwide riot/protest on anything, I auto endorse it, and we'll be right behind him." Yes. Country clubman K. Michael Biddlin for ruler of sport. 36:47 He says- Bring your own pitchforks. I'm not supplying them this time. [laughs] Mar- we're marching on DC, yo. Did, did you supply them last time? Really? Yeah, I did, yeah. Yeah. Yeah, yeah. Too, too many pitchforks. 36:58 So you're handing them out. I had to bring it back to Ho- Home Depot. It was real awkward. Uh, let's recap the best bets from today's show here on The Numbers Game, and we got a bevy of them. A bevy, Kelly. 37:07 I like that word. Yeah, we do. Uh, mine is, uh, no longer playable. I, uh... By the way, courtesy of G Bank, the official bank of VSiN. My Naomi Osaka is minus 135, is where I got it for VSiN subscribers last night. 37:18 She's at minus 172, uh, against Clara Tauson, so that is no longer a play. Uh, Naomi Osaka for those subscribers, though. Uh, Osaka, you know what Osaka always reminds me of also? 37:30 Uh, for those of us who are, uh, Washington Football Team fans, WFT fans, [smacks lips] uh, when Steve Spurrier was the coach, they had a preseason game in Osaka, Japan. Oh, really? Uh-huh. 37:39 And Steve Spurrier was not a, how could I put this? Was not a, uh, a wordsmith. He was not someone who made ver- profound comments. And they- No... they asked him beforehand, "What, what do you have to s-?" 37:50 He goes, they said, "What are you looking forward, uh, what do you have to say to the people of Osaka?" And he goes, "You tell them, uh, we'll see them in Osaka." That's what he said. 37:59 [laughs] One of the great- Did, did Mike Pritchard play in that game? Uh- I believe Mike Pritchard has played in every single game that's ever been played in the country. 38:06 Mike Pritchard did not, but that game was famous because Steve Spurrier, who did not get professional football, it was a Niners- [laughs] I can't- It was a Niners, uh- Dan Hanzlik... Skins game in Osaka. 38:16 And I think, I think Washington won by, like, 30 points, 'cause he had, like, Danny Wuerffel. He, like, threw out the whole playbook against the Niners. Yeah, Joe Burrow playing a, an entire game. Oh, it was ridiculous. 38:27 It was so stupid. I'm so terrified for what the Bengals are about to do this preseason. Oh, yeah. Could, could look like that. Yeah. Kelly, what do you got? Oh, it's Dak again. Yeah, Dak. 38:36 Yeah, I got, I, I'll, I'll circle back and do some golf, but Dak Prescott four to one Comeback Player of the Year. I'm in, I'm in. Let's go, Dak. Well, you tell him we'll see him in Osaka. [laughs] Thanks, coach. 38:46 Uh, Greg Peterson with a, uh, bunch of, uh, baseball picks for today. Orioles-Phillies under eight, Giants-Pirates under eight. Those ballgames start in less than an hour. Then he's got the Reds moneyline plus 120. 38:59 Also the Cubs-Reds over at Wrigley today, over seven and a half. And in the Padres-Diamondbacks game, he's got the Padres on the moneyline, and he's got the Padres-Diamondbacks under nine and a half. 39:09 Were those all his picks? That's it? Yeah. He only had six? I confirmed. Oh, okay. You, you heard me confirm. Fella had- 'Cause I, 'cause I missed the Reds-Cubs over... Fella had 25 picks. 39:19 Uh, this is also from Will Hill on baseball. He's got the Rangers first five plus a half a run today. Uh, Will loves the first five dog plays catching a half a run. It's Lirder against Rodon. 39:31 Rangers trying to sweep the Yankees. If the Rangers win, the Yankees will be on the outside looking in of the American League Wild Card playoff picture. Wow. He's also on the A's today on the moneyline. 39:42 The hard-hitting Athletics, who are what? Two, three years away from, uh, playing in Las Vegas. And you already said, what was the thing you were talking about? The ballpark? 39:50 Closest seats to home plate, they're saying, here in Las Vegas. Clo- they will have the closest seats to home plate in Major League Baseball in the smallest foul ball territory. [laughs] Oh, just a- Pl- plus-... 40:01 complete contrast to how the A's, uh, played in Oakland... plus the one that you and I found the most comical, I think, of 80% of the seats will be within the, uh, foul poles. 40:09 [laughs] So I guess there's just that much outfield seating. Or not m- a big ballpark is what you're saying? Yeah, that's right. Uh, he's also on the Orioles-Phillies under two and a half first three. 40:22 We've been betting a lot of these first three bets. So where they are available, Orioles-Phillies under two and a half. 40:28 The nice thing about first three bets over first five bets when you're betting the under is these pitchers are only going through the lineup p- once in- Yeah... once. 40:36 And so w- you know, and that's the thing with starting pitchers, is that when they go through a lineup a second and third time, there is absolute drift to their stats, and so that's the- I like it... 40:45 that's the, oh, that- Yeah, I like those... we've, we've been doing a whole bunch of. It makes, that makes a lot, I like, I really like those that I've, like, heard recently. 40:51 And then, uh, the old Samich no bottom of the ninth one. Yeah, though I, the mathematical folks like Fezzik will tell you there's no mathematical benefit to that one. Interesting. Okay. 41:01 I didn't, I didn't figure it out myself, but that's what they're saying. So. Sho- shocker. The books got one by you again. [laughs] Sia Nejad, FedEx St. 41:09 Jude Championship bets outrights, Tommy Fleetwood without Scottie, 18 to one. These are with- w- without Scottie market, 18 to one. Then Viktor Hovland in the without Scottie, Xander, JT, and Fleetwood market. 41:19 That's a hell of a number. That's a hell of a market, 25 to one. Sam Burns without Scottie, Xander, JT, and Fleetwood at 28 to one. He's got Henley over JT, that's Justin Thomas, in a head-to-head at minus 135. 41:30 And then first round leader, Fleetwood 30 to one, Viktor Hovland 35 to one, Sam Burns 40 to one, and Chris Kirk at 60 to one. You've got some FedEx as well, right? Oh, yeah, I do. Yeah. FedEx Cup playoffs, let's go. 41:42 Catch the fever. Um, okay, so- By the way, Sia also had, I should mention, Titans under and Saints under for season wins. Good call. Yeah. The, uh, the Titans conversation's becoming interesting. You're right. 41:53 They're, they're getting up there with the Vikings of the team I'm hearing differing things on. After months of not hearing a word about them. 42:00 I just, uh, uh, it's like- Like, do you remember anybody talking about the Vi- uh, the Titans positively or negatively in May? No. But this relates, again, when we talk about the Survivor documentary being out, right? 42:10 This, out, right. I didn't mean now right. 42:13 This, this relates to the Survivor documentary, which again, remember the first three weeks last year of, of Survivor, 98-plus percent got knocked out as the, as the documentary documents. See what I did there? 42:24 So- [laughs]... 42:27 um, the point of that is, and by the way, yes, that was an outlier season, but the previous two seasons, it was 70-plus percent that got knocked out the first three weeks of Survivor, and 60-plus percent So it is the standard for two-thirds to be knocked out within three weeks. 42:45 98%, yes, was an outlier, but to think, to, to recalibrate our brains, none of us really knows anything about these teams yet. 42:56 We can form our opinions, we can have our thoughts about these football teams, but the truth is, is that until we see them play, and this is particularly noticeable now when they've reduced preseason by one game. Mm-hmm. 43:08 You would think, "Oh, you've only reduced preseason by one game." Yeah, but it kind of changed the way football seasons start. 43:15 And so because of that, it's just a reminder, tread lightly, and all of these opinions we have, we're not gonna know about the Titans, we're not gonna know about J.J. McCarthy and the Vikings. The NFL's gonna NFL. Yes. 43:27 Yes. 43:27 You, you and I have the discussion, one of the segments that we're gonna do either tomorrow or the day after, is the, that the, the team that has no shot of making the playoffs, that's gonna make the playoffs, 'cause it happens every year. 43:39 Yeah, it does. And then the team that we all assume, and excluding the betting markets, are gonna make it, are who's gonna miss. 'Cause that's, the NFL's gonna NFL. Um, all right, my St. 43:47 Jude, uh, bets, yes, uh, like Sia Nishad, I am avoiding one Scottie Scheffler as much as I can. The guy's good at golf. There's only 68 other guys playing in this tournament. Um, a- so this is how I bet it. 43:59 Xander outright 18 to 1, also bet him in the winner without Scheffler market at 12 to 1, also bet him top five plus 325. 44:06 Russell Henley, 29 to 1 outright, 20 to 1 in the winner without Scheffler market, and then a top 10, two to one, pretty heavy on Russell Henley. I also added a top 20 bet on him. 44:16 Love Russell Henley this week, uh, hope he shows up big. That would be nice. Matt Fitzpatrick, love him. He's on fire right now, too. I can't remember the last time I bet this much Matt Fitzpatrick over a month span. 44:26 Uh, 29 to 1 in the outright market, 22 to 1 winner without Scheffler, and then a top 10 on him at two to one as well. Ludvig Åberg, ah, taking a swing on Ludvig. 44:36 Look, every time he drifts back to this kind of number, I, I, this is just a bet on the high upside talent that Åberg has. Um, maybe, maybe not the perfect course for him, but still it's su- such a driver heavy course. 44:49 If he can keep it in the fairway, keep it out of the water, that's gonna be big. Uh, Ludvig 30 to 1 in the outright market, and then t- uh, winner without 22 to 1, and top five plus 450. 45:00 And then I have top 20s on Tommy Fleetwood, Matt Fitzpatrick, and Russell Henley. Sorry, not Matt Fitzpatrick, Vic- Viktor Hovland. Fitzpatrick in the top, uh, 10. 45:10 And then first round leader bets I did make this morning as well for tomorrow, Hovland, Henley, Kiriyama, and Kirk for me. It's like- It happens, man... someone- We, we get into a conversation... 46:09 someone derailed it with, like, a Steve Spurrier random story. So there- We probably had a lot of smart things to say. And- We probably, we probably did. Yeah. Or you know what? I could res- I could request a third hour. 46:18 I could do one of those things. You could do that, too. I could request that, you know. Yeah, that works. Money Moves is next. JBT in the house, Jonathan Von Tobel. Uh, he will talk, uh, preseason football and beyond. 46:30 We will do that coming back on VSiN, the sports betting network. Enjoy. [upbeat music]
