We were talking earlier that in North American sports, Indiana 100 to 1 pre-flop this year, by far the longest odds since 2001 according to s- our buddy Blake over at Sports Odds History, uh, to win the college football national championship.

But from a North American sports perspective, only the Greatest Show on Turf Rams of 1999 were longer at 150 to 1, when again, Trent Green went down and a Arena League grocery sor- grocery store stock, uh, stockroom guy, Kurt Warner, ends up being their quarterback.

They end up winning the championship at 150 to 1. But you, sir, getting to the point, were at ESPN when Leicester City made their run to the Prem title. Can you walk us through that?

Yeah, this is one of those sports stories, it's so absurd that it was hard to put in context.

And this was, you know, this is 10 years ago this year, so sports betting was not as pervasive in the US or at ESPN as it is now. So, you know, Leicester was 5,000 to 1 to win the Premier League before the season.

[laughs] At the time, like the comps I was pulling out was like a 15 seed to win the NCAA tournament. Cal State Bakersfield had 5,000 to 1 odds to win that year.

And then there's all kinds of absurd things like Elvis is alive that you could find at the British books. Elvis is alive was 5,000 to 1. Right, yeah. That's what we're talking about. All kinds of nuts stuff like that.

That's the extreme sort of thing that we're talking about here.

Because, you know, your closest, I guess, MLB comp, 'cause you gotta have the financial disparity, would be like, you know, the A's or something winning the World Series now, not 20 years ago, but now.

But even those odds aren't what they used to be. You don't find 5,000 to 1 on even the worst teams before the season, because it really changed how, especially the British sports books, uh, put the numbers up there.

so that's what we were talking about with Leicester City. And you're right, not only British, but like, you know, even the notion of a bad NFL team being anything longer than 500 to 1 would never- Mm-hmm...

ever happen again because of Leicester City. But that, so, so I guess the whole point of that is what I'm saying is Indiana winning this title,

We're talking that kind of ineptitude historically, on top of they just weren't expected to do it before the season, which makes the Indiana story even that much better.

And, and you said Leicester City the year before had just been called up to the Premier League. Yeah. That was part of it, yeah. Yeah.

Yeah, I mean, they'd been, they were in the Premier League like 15 years before or so, but two years ago they were in the championship. Seven years before that, they were in the third division.

Uh, so they were, had finished 14th in the Premier League. It wasn't like, ooh, they're on the rise.

Like this was, this wasn't even a sleeper or one of those sexy picks that someone might make to kind of be weird before the season. The Premier League is so top-heavy- Yeah...

that it wasn't even a thought that anyone outside those top four or so teams could win it, let alone this team that just got back up to the Premier League. It's incredible.

La- last thing on this, 'cause you, you touched on it earlier, but I'm curious. So this was, again, 10 years ago. This was pre-PASPA being ruled unconstitutional. This was right before VSiN started, right? Yeah.

VSiN started in 2017. This was, this happened in 2016. You explaining to your ESPN colleagues, like what, what did that conversation look like? Yeah. I mean, first I had to explain like what's a Leicester, you know?

Uh, and then it was, you know, like where they finished, they were in the second division.

But the odds were really helpful then because I could say, you know, the Rams were 150 to 1, uh, you know, who, who's the, the worst team, you know, it was like week eight of the NFL season and this 318 was 5,000 to 1 to win the title.

Uh, so like putting it in perspective with the odds really helped a lot because you got to just the most absurd things that no one would ever think of betting on.

This, you know- I think it was like the 14 win Timberwolves in March- Yeah... were 5,000 to 1 win the NBA title. That kind of thing. That's it.

That, when people, that, that really just opened their eyes like, "Oh, like this is not just another soccer team I've never heard of winning the title, this really is absurd."

From a big picture perspective, this is the best teams in Europe all coming together to play a, a tournament.

It's basically the NCAA tournament for college basketball, but they play it concurrently with the regular season instead of, you know, broken out at the end of the season. It's so weird. And the format does- Yeah...

it, it, it, it, I remember when I started getting into soccer, like when I was in college and I had a couple friends who had lived in England, they were explaining all this to me.

Like, it, it just takes a while to, for your brain to adjust. I mean, you play a lot of FIFA and it becomes second nature, so, um, but the- Right, and the, and the, and the- But the format- The NBA equivalent- Yeah...

is not the equivalent because it's the very same teams playing in a mid-season tournament in the NBA Cup. Right. So it's not like- Right... yeah, different leagues. It's not quite the same. Right. Right.

If they invited, you know, teams from Spain or whatever to come play in this other tournament at the same time, it'd be kind of like that.

Uh, but the format's worth pointing out here again, because this changed a couple years ago.

This is the second year, I believe, in this new format, where instead of these, you know, four groups of four like you're kind of used to in tournament soccer, in the group stage they now have one giant table of 36 teams.

And so you're not playing everybody obviously, but they try to balance the schedule as much as possible from a quality of opponent. And the top 24 of those 36 advance to the round of 32.

There's some incentives to finish in the top eight, because you get a bye to the round of 16. So it's a weird thing where- Hmm...

like kind of the first six match days I think matter less, but now we're in the last couple, and there's finally some clarity on who might advance, who, uh, is trying to get the bye and things like that.

So where, h- so how many teams are left now? They're all still there, but we have two games left in this group stage. Gotcha.

So, you know, I don't think anybody's clinched advancement, because you play so few games it's just gonna be tight.

But we're at the point where some teams are gonna start clinching certain spots today and tomorrow, and we'll have a lot more clarity heading into the final group match day in a week or two.

I see, the seventh of eight group games. Gotcha. Yep. Okay. Exactly. And you landed on three of these. What do you have for us? Yeah. We're gonna start with Copenhagen and Napoli over two and a half.

Uh, I got a terrible number at this, at plus 105. It's moved to like plus 120, plus 125 this morning, so obviously that's better.

Uh, Copenhagen scores a lot in the Danish Super League, and they've scored in all three Champions League home games.

And they've also conceded at least two, uh, in all six of their Champions League games so far this season. So five of their six have had four plus goals.

That includes some home games against teams in Napoli's class, a Dortmund, a Leverkusen. Uh, Napoli's had been playing well, but they kind of slowed down in Serie A the last, uh, few weeks down to third place.

But they have been attacking better lately. Uh, that'll open them up a little bit more in the back and obviously lead to goals, I think on both ways. Copenhagen really needs a result here.

A win would be great, because they're on the bubble to advance. So I think we're gonna, this one will be a little more open than the numbers might suggest. Uh, over two and a half I get, I got a plus 105.

Barcelona as Slavia Prague. Uh, Slavia Prague, one of the worst teams in the group right now. They're 33rd out of 36 teams. They lost to Tottenham, they lost to Arsenal, they lost to Inter all by three goals.

Barcelona's as good or better than all those teams. Uh, so winning by a couple is pretty reasonable. Barcelona's motivated because they're in 15th, but only four points clear of elimination.

So you win here, you lock up a spot, uh, heading into the last match day. Barcelona's first in La Liga, but this, this feel, doesn't feel like they are.

They, they had won nine straight La Liga games by two plus goals till, uh, this last weekend when they kind of got soccered by Real Sociedad, lost, uh, despite outplaying them. So they should have Raphinha back.

They need a big win here to wrap up a top eight spot, scoring three goals a game in Champions League, but put up four or more against the kind of bottom feeders like Pafos and Club Brugge that they've played.

So, you know, Harry Kane probably gonna get one or two. He's scoring more than a goal per game. Uh, Saint-Gilloise is, they give up four to Inter, four to Newcastle, both at home.

Mm-hmm. We'll often talk about Super Bowl MVP market as a way to bet the Super Bowl by proxy. So in other words, let's take the Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl years, right? Maybe they have more.

So we would often say, "Hey, listen, if the Chiefs are gonna win the Super Bowl," this is before the playoffs start, "it's very likely that Patrick Mahomes will be their MVP. Why not get a, take a better price?

If you think the Chiefs are gonna win it all, why not take a better price on Patrick Mahomes to win MVP than you would the Chiefs to win the actual Super Bowl?"

And there was many instances like this over the years, I'm just using the most obvious one, where betting the Super Bowl MVP market by proxy was a strategic way to bet. This year, we have not talked about it. Why?

I will just sort of, we've not, Kelly and I have even talked about it off air. I will just suggest that because it is the most free-for-all of all seasons,

that you hardly know who's gonna win the Super Bowl, let alone who's gonna be the MVP of those teams- Yeah... winning the Super Bowl. So this is not something that we have discussed until this moment.

When we're down to the final four, if you will, Sam Darnold is your Super Bowl MVP short shot because the Seahawks are the Super Bowl short shot, and because he is the quarterback of said Seattle Super- uh, Seattle Seahawks.

I almost said SuperSonics. Sam Darnold is the short shot at plus 260. It also follows that Drake May of the Patriots, right, the AFC Championship favorite, is plus 290. He's the quarterback of the Patriots.

All of that makes mathematical sense, but again, it is one of those years where it has not been a market that we have touched on because of just this wacko nature of the NFL this year.

And, like, I'm just staring at that odds board right now, like, okay, who's the, the, the guy who's the most obvious quarterback that you'd attach to a team is Matthew Stafford, but like, I don't, like, there's other big names on that roster.

There's other big names. Right? Like- Yeah... Puka Nacua has a huge game. He is very live to steal that from Stafford. Yes. And Sam Darnold has Jaxon Smith-Njigba and Kenneth Walker. Yeah.

And Rasheed Shaheed, right, who is, by the way, can we just state again, what a trade deadline pickup he ended up being from a special teams standpoint.

Like, I, I think Shaheed, if the Seahawks make it, will be one of those longer shots that we hear brought up a ton as far as people betting. 'Cause he's involved in special teams- Right... right?

So here, I guess here's the way I think about it. Now, it's, for me, there's not something that's jumping out to m- to bet right now, right? Me neither.

But I think if you are, if you're someone who is very strong on the Rams or the Seahawks, right, uh, you know, Ra- Rams over the Seahawks or Seahawks over the Rams, then sure, get in front of your, you know, if you really wanna bet Stafford to win Super Bowl MVP or something, that number will be shorter.

I don't think it's worth it right now, though. I'd probably just wait. Um, and I, I guess the same could be said for the Patriots, right?
