[upbeat music] The numbers tell the story. They always do. He's one of those idiots who believe in analytics. This is a Numbers Game with Gil Alexander on VSiN. Hour number two of a Numbers Game at VSiN.
2:11
Esports betting network, visa.com, Game Plus, iHeartRadio, YouTube, TV, of course, SiriusXM channel 158. Gil Alexander. Kelly Bidlack, producer number nine, so much more than a producer. How you doing, man? Oh, man.
2:23
I'm doing great. Do you like my little Iverson ran it o- off to the side there? [laughs] It's not a sport. [laughs] Great. It- it's, it's, again, this is part of the VSiN plus, plus, plus subscription. Oh, man.
2:35
We can't really talk about it on air. Yeah. But, uh- One of these days... yeah, some things Kelly gets upset about. [laughs] Some s- [laughs] Not a sport, Gil. [laughs] Not a sport. Uh, we get tweets, speeding the book.
2:45
Shooter McGammon: "Thought it was crazy that the officials stopped the clock after Iowa made that three-pointer with four seconds left. Florida didn't have a timeout. March Madness only kind of guy.
2:53
Does this happen often?" They reset the clock, right, to give them a, some more time? Uh, yeah, they... There was something going on there. I didn't catch it exactly. The, the tweet's spot on, though, with, like...
3:04
NCAA tournament, I never see... The clock is constantly changing. You know? It is. Like, like they go to a timeout- Yes... and it's like, "Yeah, let's throw, like, 1.7 back on there."
3:12
I thought the officiating generally was pretty bad. Like, in some of these games I thought it w- it was swayed to one side more than the- Mm, yes. Agreed... more than the other.
3:19
The, the, the Kentucky Santa Clara finish was the one that most people had trouble with in terms of, oh, the official should have seen that Sendek was calling a timeout, and the clock didn't start as soon as it should have with 2.4 seconds left, or 2.6, whatever Kentucky before the, uh, before the, uh, Otego Oweh three-pointer to tie the game to send it into overtime.
3:43
I, I disagree with both of those points. One, I've seen way worse in terms of the clock starting. I didn't think it stopped... I didn't, I didn't think it started late at all when Oweh got the ball. And then two,
3:55
Sendek can, can say he was calling timeout as vociferously as he wants- Right... but the official has to have the eyes locked on the game. Yeah. So I don't... Like, I didn't have a problem with that either.
4:05
There was a couple of- But people, you know, on, in the Twitter sphere, not, not only Twitter, but, like, TikTok and- Yeah...
4:10
Instagram, there's this whole cottage industry of people who always wanna say, "It's all fixed." It's like, no, it's not. The, the timeout thing has been a...
4:18
Look, that's an issue since the beginning of basketball, right? Troy- Yeah. It, it, or, not even just basketball. We talk about it with football all the time, too. You've gotta get the official's attention, right?
4:27
Like, it's gotta be seen. I saw that happen a few times this weekend, it felt like. Yeah. Of just running down the court trying to get a timeout. Fire Jerry Jones, WNBA expert, says, "As much as I want St.
4:37
John's to win, I feel Zuby will have two fouls called on him in the first five minutes. Some people think Duke gets a lot of calls." Hm.
4:44
Uh, Jim James Sod, hey, great seeing you again, James Sod, and your, and your buddies, uh, on Thursday. He says, "Well, since we talked post-show Thursday, Iga loses and now has to get, uh, now has to let go her coach.
4:55
Not sure that this is the move, but hopefully a step back to being the Queen of Clay." Oh, I mean, we, I... Listen, as, as I've talked about, something's going on between the ears.
5:05
She has finally admitted something's going on between the ears. I don't think there's any question about that.
5:10
Um, and then she could, as you said, she could come back and she could win the French Open, and all will be forgotten. I, the coach thing is not official yet right, though, right? Is that just a rumor about Wim?
5:20
We'll see. Uh, the numbers guys, what a tournament Miami. Alcaraz out for a second straight tourney as well. The numbers guys, Greg has time for double duty? I get tired just hearing his words per minute spoken.
5:32
Well, he's, he's, he has a lot on his mind. And it's- Oh, well, you're not speeding him up on podcast form... Linda Cardia, "Good morning, gents. I had to make sure my hay was in the barn.
5:42
Uh, for example, I made my bets first, then I definitely let Mr. Bill know your name was appearing as Jonathan Davis. Great show as always." Thank you, Linda. That's very kind of you. Um,
5:51
you know what we do as an annual tradition here before we get to country clubbing?
5:54
Annual tradition here on the show, Kelly, is that after the first week of March Madness, I talk about the, uh, most annoying commercials and the most, uh, ridiculous announcer things. Oh, yes.
6:04
I, I was going through most of the weekend, I was like, "I don't think I'm gonna have m- any, much for either of these."
6:08
[laughs] Then, oh, the announcers certainly came through Well, you just gotta let the game settle down a little bit, right? Just- It's not as rapid. Yeah... let the whole weekend go.
6:18
As far as the commercials, I wasn't nearly as annoyed. Like, there was no, there was no Chet Holmgren, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Jaylen Williams level annoying commercials that there have been in years past.
6:28
You- I've got one for you. I've got one. Okay. Go ahead. What's yours? No, I was gonna text this to you and Todd, but then I forgot.
6:34
Like, the, we, we went, uh, we went on the whole, uh, cottage cheese thing, you know, a few weeks ago, right? Only Daisy cottage cheese will do, Kelly. So what's with, like, the, the...
6:43
You know what's also confusing is their sour cream, like, commercial. Like, I don't, like, there's just... How many sour cream options are there? It's the same thing.
6:50
Daisy just goes back and forth between the cottage cheese and the sour cream. Sour cream that beloved by people, I guess it is. Well, okay, one, one, a little bit that, right?
6:58
And two, I just d- I, I can't name that many brands, Daisy. Like, you're, you're the only one. You've got it. You've got it owned.
7:04
Most annoying commercials based on, uh, I think also not only annoyance, but number of times they were shown over the weekend. The Boozer brothers. Y- yeah.
7:12
Uh, now you see it, now you don't, now you see it, now you don't. That one where, uh, Cam, Cam Boozer says to his dad, [laughs] he says to his dad, uh, "I got you, bro." That was interesting one. Yeah.
7:24
Um- Carlos looking like the, uh- There was, wasn't there another one? It was L- let's ask dad. There was another one of them. Oh, I feel like there was multiple Boozers. Yeah, there's multiple Boozers.
7:30
And then the, uh, the Hannah Berner, uh, Buffalo Wild Wings with, uh, with, of course, uh, Beck Bennett voicing the buffalo in the Buffalo Wild Wings commercial. He goes, "Is this a podcast?" "Absolutely it is.
7:43
Now let's get vulnerable." And she says, "Um, I don't know if my parents-" Yeah. And he's like, "Oh, no, no, no, no, not about, not about that, not about you, about the pick six meal for two." That one.
7:52
That was kind of annoying. But the commercials didn't really annoy- Who, who, who is that person that's in that commercial? She is Hannah Berner.
7:57
She was, I think she was on one of these reality shows, and she does a very popular podcast- Makes sense... called the Gig- I figured it was something like that...
8:03
called the Giggly Squad, I believe, with, uh, Paige Sorma. Like, I have no idea who this is. All right. Announcers, though, announcers always come through. Grant Hill, for his annual milk toast-ness.
8:12
No, no real particular comment. I just want to say this about Grant Hill. Never says an- a lovely man, I'm sure. Never says anything that you remember, and now has adopted, have you noticed this?
8:23
He's adopted the Bill Raftery inflection. So- Oh, yeah... he does the whole, "Great cut, great pass, great finish." You know, Raftery has that kind of thing that he does. Uh-huh. The, the Raftery voice.
8:36
Hill now has the same kind of thing. Uh, Brandon Gaudin in the Vanderbilt game against Nebraska when Van- Vanderbilt went up 56-53. He goes, "And Nebraska has their first lead." Just a mistake.
8:46
Um, there was a graphic during the Miami game yesterday. Zero points in the last one minute and five seconds. That seemed unnecessary.
8:53
[laughs] Uh, this is from s- Especially when you get plenty of good ones of those, when it's, like, zero points in the last 7:03, 'cause that happens.
9:01
Spiro Didvis with his normal inability to, uh, monitor his excitement level based on the time of game. Look at... So this is in the Purdue game. "Look at Smith, just a master class.
9:13
The basketball maestro gets them out of the chairs here in St. Louis." 16-12 Purdue over Miami. [laughs] It's like, okay. And then the whole weekend was waiting for Steve Lapus to show up.
9:25
Steve Lapus in the last minute of the Virginia-Tennessee game had a tour de force of what are you talking about, uh, with, uh, with- I did not catch this... with 40 seconds left. 73-71 Tennessee over Virginia.
9:36
Virginia ball, 40 seconds left. They're down two, final's 40 seconds. He goes, "Work as long as you have to to get a good one here." [laughs] That was the first thing.
9:46
Then, uh, with 11, with 11 seconds left, 77-71 Tennessee over Virginia, Gillespie of Tennessee commits a foul. He goes, "That is the one thing you could not... Well, it's not the one thing.
9:59
It's one of the two things you couldn't do. You couldn't give up a three, and you couldn't foul that quickly." Actually, it's not that, that big of a calamity that he fouled there at all. [laughs] That's good.
10:07
And then the final one, later down 77-72 with 9.8 seconds left, UVA ball, he goes, "Would you like to have a three here? Absolutely, but it's not the end of the world if you get a quick two.
10:17
Either way, you're gonna need another basket." Well, it's not the end of the world, Steve, but- [laughs]... it might've been the end of the game if you got a two, let's put it that way. Oh, that's great.
10:25
[laughs] Uh, [laughs] there was others. Dan Bonner. That's probably the best. We'll leave it at that one. Oh, man, I don't... I, I, I, one more commercial thought. Did, are, are you through? Oh. Yeah, I'm good. I'm good.
10:32
That, that was... Great list. Yeah. I, I'm so glad you do that every, uh, every year. We, we caught a good one. What was that, Thursday? "The strategy here is- Oh, yeah...
10:40
you gotta steal the ball, and then you can foul- That's right... if you need to." Um- Oh, who was that? I forgot who that was. I don't remember either. I don't remember.
10:46
The one, uh, the one I gotta give a shout-out, to a company that I've crushed before for their commercials. Uh-huh. Capital One back at it, as they usually are, with, like, five new sets of comm- uh, sets of commercials.
10:56
Oh, sure. Yeah. But one of they stopped, Gil, or at least I haven't caught it. Jennifer Garner is now only claiming to own and operate a small, a, a small company instead of, "You might remember me from my other job."
11:07
Yeah, she doesn't bring that up anymore. She doesn't bring that up anymore because nobody remembers you from your other job, Jennifer Garner, 'cause you haven't been in anything in, like, 10 years. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
11:15
That commercial was awkward for, like, six years. "You might know me from my other job." I, like, I wor- I worked with someone in Florida. Never forget this. Photog. He was, he was, like, mid-20s at the time.
11:26
This is, like, 10 years ago. He's like, "Who's that?" He had no idea who she was. Yeah, I mean, I barely remember who she was. I know. She was, like, big on Al- uh, what was that show she was?
11:35
She was Alien, what was the name of that show? Yeah, that was one of Jennifer Garner hits. We have to pull... That was her big, that was her big show, and then after that, what'd she do? She was in Dude, Where's My Car?
11:43
Oh, sure. [laughs] I'm supposed to remember that. Oh my gosh. Also, how old, how old do you think Jennifer Garner is? Take a guess. Oh, she's gotta be, like, late 40s maybe. 53. Oh, wow, okay.
11:51
Yeah, I would've guessed mid to late 40s. Yeah. Okay. By the way, some, uh, trends that also continued during March Madness. Uh, well, here's one that's, that, you know, again, isn't going to happen.
12:01
I, I have thought all number one seeds, b- based on the bracket I filled out in the Megapod, all four number one seeds would reach the, uh, have only reached the Final Four twice, 2008 and then last year.
12:11
2025, Auburn, Florida, Duke, and Houston. That will not happen, obviously, with Florida's loss yesterday. Alias Alias, not aliens Alias, yeah Pardon me.
12:19
Uh, first four teams have reached the Final Four twice, VCU in 2011, UCLA in 2021. Texas still trying to, uh, be the third in that group They look pretty good, man. Yeah, they do.
12:32
Top four seed has lost in the first round in 15 of the last 17 tournaments. Well, guess what? Now it's 15 of the last 18. Two years in a row it didn't happen.
12:44
Uh, at least one double-digit seed has reached the Sweet 16 since 2008. Last year it barely survived with Arkansas as a 10 seed. This year it barely survives with Texas as an 11 seed, but that streak is alive.
12:55
Double-digit seed getting to the Sweet 16. Only one the last two years. Um, mentioned the first four team stuff to the Final Four, which Texas is trying to con- uh, be the third team.
13:05
First four team has reached the round of 32 now 13 of the last 15 years, Texas being another one. Um, VCU was also a, a double-digit seed, as was High Point.
13:16
And then the last team to win a title in a home state, UCLA 1975, when they won it in San Diego. Indiana is where the Final Four is this year. Purdue still alive, trying to be
13:27
the first since UCLA in 1975 to win it in their home state. Um, and no team has three-peated since UCLA.
13:33
That will begin, that will continue, I should say, as Florida tried to get their second of three anyway towards a three-peat. What are you, what are you smiling at? Best Fezzik text ever. Oh, I gotta see this.
13:45
On the other side. Coming back. Wes Reynolds. Fezzik's text on the other side as well. Coming back. You're here because you want an edge. That's what separates listeners from winners.

15:59
We were saying, uh, all the last couple weeks when we were talking about our, the Prophet X sponsorship here in this King of March contest, you can go anywhere in the world, and we were amazed by that. But it's the...
16:08
What we failed to mention is you hit $10,000, you're entered for a $10,000 trip. So they don't care where you go. It's just a $10,000 trip. Mm-hmm. So if you wanted to go to the Seychelles, let's say- Mm-hmm...
16:17
you might be able to go for, like, two days, and then you have to come back. It's $10,000. That's a g- that's a good point. Yeah. Okay. I could get a lot, I could- Yeah...
16:25
I could get a lot more bang for my buck- That's correct... if I went to, like, Wisconsin or something like that instead. [laughs] Correct. Think you'd choose Wisconsin?
16:33
Wiscon- [laughs] Hey, Wisconsin's beautiful- Hey, I hear it's lovely this time of year... in the summertime, man. Oh, we got tweets to be in the book.
16:37
Steve Gronewold, "What do you think of Michigan State's chances at this point, especially with Jeremy Fears playing so well as he did the last few days? He just set the Spartan record with 16 assists versus Louisville.
16:46
Could you see a Michigan State/Michigan game for the Natty? Go green." Um, I'm not predicting it, but would it be the most shocking thing in the world? No.
16:55
The Izzo versus Michigan, I- would not be the most shocking thing in the world. Uh, Dr. Van Nostrand. Fears, Jeremiah Fears', y- older brother. A l- things Kelly learned over the first- Oh...
17:07
uh, rounds of the NCAA tournament. Okay. I was like, "They gotta be related," and I wasn't expecting the older brother, though. Dr. Van Nostrand, h- "Hi, Gil and Kelly.
17:14
I can't be the only one that when I take an under, I'm constantly staring at the clock and realizing that the refs botch the clock at least 50 times. Ugh." Michael Burns, "Bill Raftery is a treasure. That is all." He is.
17:26
Mm-hmm. Does anybody notice that Grant Hill thing where you- Mm... he's stolen his inflection? I, I will be watching out for it more now. It's like, it's like da da da, da da da, da da da da da.
17:35
Which is how Raftery says almost everything. Yeah. And Grant Hill only talks like that now. Not only, I'm not supposed to say that. That's interesting. I'll have to keep, I'm gonna keep an eye on that one.
17:42
Oh, and, uh, one of the trends that we didn't talk about this last segment that has continued, uh, Chris Falica had tweeted this as well. "Gators add to this historical note with their loss to Iowa.
17:51
Only one defending champ since 2007 has advanced past the Sweet 16." Wow. Of course, UConn, right, in the back-to-back, the, uh, second year, would be the exception to that.
18:04
Thank you to, thank you to, uh, Anthony Ventresca for letting us know about that. Wes Reynolds joins us now, courtesy of the Progressive guest line, to talk some college hoops and some golf.
18:13
Uh, you can follow him on Twitter @wesreynolds1. That's the number one. Wes, good morning, sir. Good morning, Gil. Uh, the... So let's start with the golf first. Let's get that out of the way.
18:23
You did not have Matt Fitzpatrick I did not. Uh, the gentleman next to you did. Congratulations to him. Uh, I've been chasing him. I think we've both been chasing him all spring, and- Yeah...
18:34
and, you know, when, when he lost at The PLAYERS, I feel like it's so hard to get back, you know, get back going that y- it, it's like in any other sport.
18:44
When you, when you lose a game that you should've won, sometimes you lose that next game, and that's why I didn't go back to him. And, and, and, and it's really been a opposite so far this year.
18:55
Like, Jacob Bridgeman, uh, you know, had a bad run at Pebble Beach at the end when he was in contention, and then he wins the very next week at The Genesis.
19:03
And Matt Fitzpatrick, a tournament at The PLAYERS that he probably should've gotten home, didn't get home, and then he wins the very next week.
19:11
So usually you don't see that happen, but it's becoming more regular than it has in the past. You have not added any Masters bets since the last time we spoke, Wes? You were kind of- No. Yeah. N- nah, not, not yet.
19:23
And, you know, just kinda, a lot of it is timing.
19:26
And I, I think at this point you're getting so close to the event that the numbers are, are kind of gonna be what they are, especially with the top-end players because these have been up since, like, last fall, last winter in terms of a, a, a futures board, and obviously they move based on each week's results.
19:44
So no, I haven't added anything as of yet. I, I did add a small, uh, Fitzpatrick at 35 to 1 yesterday during the round. I think what Wes just said, though, is a very important point.
19:54
It wasn't anything I was gonna bet big. At the, at this point, these numbers are gonna be pretty close. Uh, it, it honestly might be worse, it, than what you could get week of the Masters.
20:04
So I think at this point if you haven't really made any bets, I'd probably sit tight too. Let's go to college basketball, Wes, the madness. Um, did it live up to the hype?
20:12
Well, I think we all kind of said, or at least we did here, uh, it's probably gonna year with, gonna be a year with very few upsets. That's gonna affect your bracket ups or your upset rewarded brackets.
20:22
It's gonna upset, it's going to affect your survivor pools.
20:25
Um, let's start with a question I asked of Greg earlier I'll ask of you, which is did anything massively surprise you here in the first weekend of, of the big dance? You know, not, not particularly.
20:37
Uh, I, I think that we knew that we weren't gonna get that, that low major probably advancing. And, and that's, I think maybe the one thing in this tournament that we lack. We don't have a true Cinderella.
20:48
We have one double-digit seed, and it's Texas, for God sakes. Yeah. You know, it's not some, it's not some small school, and that's the one thing we miss. But I think we've had some good games, and we've had some upsets.
20:59
Uh, obviously what happened with, uh, with Florida last night.
21:03
But you wanna look at Iowa, and I think Iowa, Iowa is very similar to, uh, my alma mater, Indiana, in Curt Cignetti's first year, and they have roster continuity, where, uh, Ben McCollum brought, I believe, six players with him from Drake that were in his program, but that, by the way, won an NCAA tournament game last year.
21:22
So they weren't total greenhorns being in the NCAA tournament. Like, they weren't gonna, I think, buckle under the pressure, weren't gonna have any fear, and they certainly didn't show it last night.
21:32
And, you know, it's the same as Cign had with James Madison when he had, like, 13 players come with him to Indiana.
21:38
So Iowa, I, I mean, I guess you're surprised that they pulled the upset, but not surprised that it was a competitive game.
21:44
And, you know, now Iowa is in the Sweet 16, and they're playing a team that don't, that doesn't out-athlete them. They're playing Nebraska, who split the season series with them.
21:54
Uh, so, you know, Iowa absolutely is, I think, very live to at least get to the Elite Eight before maybe they find a team that's gonna out-athlete them. But, you know, nothing really, I think, I think, shocking here.
22:06
You kind of felt maybe one number one was gonna get got, and it was Florida, who I thought just, that's a tough matchup in the second round.
22:13
To play one of those teams, either Iowa or Clemson, that's just gonna grind you down to a halt and keep that score in the low 70s, and that's what the Hawkeyes did.
22:22
If I went outside the formula, Duke, Arizona, Michigan, uh, and Houston being the four that qualify to win it all now with Florida's absence, and now I say to you, "Hey, Wes, guess what?
22:34
One of those four did not win the championship. The team that won it is..." I would say Arkansas.
22:42
And, and I know they got a test against High Point on Saturday night in the second round, didn't really get away from them until, like, the final two minutes of the game.
22:49
But the NCAA tournament is always about guards, and I think Arkansas has the best guard in the NCAA tournament with Darius Acuff.
22:57
And, and he's one of the, b- they're one of the few teams, Houston, I think, being another with a fr- another freshman, Kingston Flemings,
23:04
where you have a guard that can take over the game, where you have a guard that can call his own number, like, five straight possessions down the stretch.
23:12
And Arkansas has that with Darius Acuff being a three-level scorer, can shoot the three, can get to the rim, can get to the line. So that's what I think makes them dangerous.
23:22
Like, he, he, he basically carried them down the stretch, and the other guys just had to defend and rebound. And that makes Arkansas, I think, very dangerous here.
23:30
So I think that, that Arkansas-Arizona game, I thought that that number came out a little bit high. Look, Arizona deserves a lot of respect, but I saw even some nine and a half out there.
23:39
And against a dangerous guard like Acuff, uh, I thought that was too high.
23:43
Before we move on to some of the other games, because I, I do wanna get to all your thoughts on these, but since you bring that up on Acuff, 'cause we were talking earlier about the number one pick in the draft, Aaron Peterson looking non-number one pick in the draftee, uh, over the weekend here.
23:58
If, for those bettors who are like, "Oh, I don't know, Acuff at, at these really long numbers," do you really think a, a, a team will pick him one?
24:05
We, we were talking, uh, in our text, uh, Kelly and me, with Montesano over the weekend. You know, I was bringing up the fact th- p- point guards are tough, right?
24:12
If they're not Iverson or John Wall or Derrick Rose status, right? Then it's like for every Cade Cunningham, there's a Markelle Fultz or a- Mm-hmm... Ben Simmons kind of thing. Mm-hmm.
24:25
Doesn't that alone make teams sort of reticent to go with a point guard like Acuff first? W- well, I, I think it does. And, and, and also the fact of who's gonna get the ping pong balls, you know?
24:36
I'm hoping it- it's my Indiana Pacers, and if the Indiana Pacers get them, well, it's like, are you gonna draft a ball-dominant guard when you have a ball-dominant guard in Tyrese Haliburton?
24:46
So that kind of makes it like, well, maybe we gotta look elsewhere. Maybe we gotta look at Dobonsa, or maybe we gotta look at Cam Boozer or somebody like that that's a different position.
24:55
So I think, I think that all depends. And, you know, size is always gonna matter, even in this pace and space basketball, where you're gonna wanna find a big guy more often than not.
25:06
Uh, unless he is in a, just a pure elite scorer, you're gonna favor, like, the big guys in the wings over the guards with the number one pick.
25:14
A- and just even b- even positional size at the guard position becomes such a big thing in the- Yeah... NBA. Bigger guards needing those.
25:20
And they, uh, the two cr- criticisms I've heard on Acuff for, for, for the NBA level, just the size and then I, I t- I saw someone tweet this weekend that they, they had heard from an NBA front office that, uh, Acuff, Acuff could be the worst defender in the NBA next season.
25:35
Well, and the size, I, I'm, I'm... This is obviously an extreme and a ridiculous example. The worst defender.
25:40
But I remember when I was [laughs] I remember when the Bullets drafted Muggsy Bogues, and I remember my buddy Neville, who happens to be Michael Wilbon's best friend, Neville. Eh.
25:48
I remember him saying, him going, "Muggsy? You imagine when Magic posts him up?" [laughs] Like, you know, and so there's a little bit of that, right, with the, with the smaller size guard no matter what.
25:58

26:50
Just wanna read a couple here. This is from Shrek McPhee, who says, "Anywhere I can get a line on Coco double faults today?" Oh. What's, what's going on? Still not resolved? Gotta bet that.
26:58
Uh, I don't know if anybody puts that up. Uh, well, I know somebody does, but I don't know how rampantly those are put up.
27:05
Um, but yes, Coco we can always, when a f- in a fate of Coco, we always count on a handful of double faults, if not more.
27:12
Fred Leonards, "When the Gillespie kid fouled up six with 11 seconds left, that was the correct play.
27:17
Made far more humorous by the fact that neither Rick Barnes, Gillespie, nor Steve Lapis had any idea that the foul was the correct play for Tennessee." Well, I don't know if it was the correct play.
27:26
Let's again reset, because I was going through the Steve Lapis comments in the last minute of Tennessee-Virginia. Tennessee's up six, 11 seconds left, and they foul, and Steve Lapis loses his mind. So does Rick Barnes.
27:39
Steve Lapis is saying, "Oh, that's the worst. Oh, that's one of the w- two worst things you could do," right? It, it... I don't know if it's the correct play, Fred, but it's certainly not a calamity.
27:48
In other words, it's, it's really the same kind of logic of being up three and fouling, right? Oh, now you're up six and you're fouling. So it- it's really not a bad play. I don't know if it's the correct play.
27:57
You could still, you could certainly play it out, um, with no problem either, um, and hope he misses. And even if he makes it, you can still then extend the game and, and then employ strategy.
28:07
But it's, uh, there's certainly nothing wrong with that play. The other thing that happened yesterday just sort of strategic-wise that Steve Fezzik lost...
28:14
By the way, Steve Fezzik's text earlier, we didn't, uh- Oh, yeah. We, uh [laughs]... we didn't announce what it was. We, we never know what's gonna get Fezzik, uh, Fezzik's, you know, all riled up.
28:23
Um, but apparently the Jennifer Garner slander was too much for him. Yeah. Kelly, Jennifer Garner's awesome. She's a nice girl. [laughs] That's a, that's a tribute to the group exchange. He says, "A nice girl."
28:35
Uh, and, uh, but Fezzik was, he was all up in arms in Twitter. I don't know if you know this, but he gets up in arms on Twitter. No. No, no. He's very calm. Yeah.
28:42
Uh, because Kansas, in the s- closing sequence against St. John's, had four fouls to give, right? St. John's had the basketball, tie game, four fouls to give.
28:55
This is before Darling eventually puts it in, in the hole for the St. John's win. Mm-hmm.
29:02
And Fezzik had a problem because St.- 'cause Kansas used all those fouls with over six, the last one was with over six seconds left. And he was just losing his mind, like this was the worst thing ever.
29:13
And again, just like with the, uh, the Gillespie foul, I don't think it's, like [laughs] like I just think people have it wrong. With this, I get it. Ideally, right, ideally Steve is directionally correct. Right?
29:25
Directionally correct. Ideally you would like that last foul to be with around three or four seconds left as opposed to six plus seconds left.
29:31
But as with everything, I believe, with Fezzik, and I say this to his face, so as, I don't feel like I'm talking out of turn, as with everything that he says, he's way too absolute on this stuff.
29:40
Because if you do wait another couple seconds, right, and they further matriculate the ball down the court, if you will- Mm...
29:46
and then they hoist a shot and they get fouled in the, in the mo- in motion, then you're screaming about the other side. Right? Oh, my God, how could you not foul before they were in the motion of a shot?
29:56
So I'm just saying I, I get it. It wasn't perfectly executed, but I don't think it was the end of the world either. Yeah, yeah. Just my opinion. Wes Reynolds, uh, kind enough to join us again for a second segment.
30:06
Wes, did you see it that way, or did you think it was a complete botch by Kansas? I don't know if it was a botch necessarily.
30:12
I think maybe that last foul to give, which would've been your sixth foul, you maybe would've liked to have not given it in the back court. You know, give it in the front court, you know?
30:21
Kinda maybe try to get an idea of what a team is gonna run here, you know? And then, uh, and then obviously they have the fewest seconds possible to get- Yeah... to get some kind of a possession or some kind of play off.
30:34
So yeah, like, you had to give a couple right away in the back court, but then once you got to, okay, we gotta give the sixth foul Let's see how they're moving off the ball, let's see what they're doing, and then give the foul immediately on the inbounds where, where there's fewer seconds.
30:49
So I don't know if it was a botch. Maybe they could have played it better, but, but Darling just made a layup. Yeah. You know, things happen- That's right... in, in games. So I don't think they played it totally wrong.
30:59
They maybe could have played it a little bit of a different way when they gave that last foul, but, you know, I, I don't think they necessarily blew the game in that regard. I agree completely with all of that.
31:09
I think it could've been done better, but it's, again, it's not... Was it, was it this calamity that we like to make it out to be? I don't think it was. You, you know what?
31:17
Let me, if I can interject something, Gil- Please...
31:19
'cause you, in that conversation we were talking about with the Iowa-Florida game earlier, Todd Golden actually wanted to foul up two, uh, yesterday, but didn't wanna fou- you know, was trying not to foul Sturtz.
31:31
Wanted to make kind of one of the role players or maybe the third or fourth options make free throws in a pressure situation because...
31:38
And even if he does, Florida does get the ball back and, and on the last possession in regulation. And I'd never really heard that.
31:44
'Cause, of course, we have the debate of, you know, absolute always foul up three, and I'm not an always anything. Like, I don't deal in absolutes.
31:52
Like, there are more times often than not I think you wanna foul up three, but it depends on the time on the clock. It depends on the shooters you're playing.
31:59
But I had never heard necessarily foul up two, and that's what the Florida coach, Golden, I think, wanted to do.
32:06
But, you know, they got Sturtz, and, and Sturtz made the foul shots, and Sturtz is, like, 84%, but they were trying to foul a role player there late. So I'd never really heard anybody try to do that.
32:16
I, I was surprised when I learned that this morning, by the way, from Kelly j- here sitting to my left. I actually think Todd Golden is a great coach.
32:24
I know a lot of people like to, now that they're out, like to sort of retroactively knock on, knock on him, but I think his ideas are, are typically good.
32:31
I just, whatever the idea was, the way that they ended up defending that last sequence, right, where, like, the, the guy, uh... you know, they were already...
32:39
There were three defenders behind the play in a blink of an eye. Mm-hmm.
32:43
You know, it's like, oh, dude, what are you doing, uh, with the, uh, covering the inbounds passer and, uh, and then just having on a, on a s- just [laughs] while catching the ball.
32:53
It was already like, oh, we can get any shot we want now, and they did. Folgeras was absolutely wide open. Yep. Uh, uh, there, there in the corner.
33:01
And, uh, you know, because Sturtz, and credit Sturtz, and that's the byproduct of Iowa being so familiar.
33:07
Sturtz has played with Ben McCollum now I believe at three different schools 'cause he was at division two at Northwest Missouri State, and then was at Drake, and then was at Iowa.
33:15
So that roster continuity, even in this era of NIL and portal and all that, you still gotta have some experience. Like, unless you're Rick Pitino, where he's like, "I'm not messing with the high school kids.
33:27
This is all portal every single year." He's in his mid-70s. He don't wanna go in high school gyms and recruit these guys. Mm. So this is all portal.
33:35
But with most teams, you gotta have a mix of portal, and you gotta have roster continuity, and you gotta have guys that play multiple years in your program, and I think Iowa is really a byproduct of that.
33:47
Well, let's get to the Sweet 16. You alluded to one pick. Let's, if you could recap again what, what your pick was from the last segment, and then what else do you like? Yeah, I'll be on, I'll be on Arkansas here.
33:57
Uh, I, I think that, you know, when you have a guard that is that, that, that, that is that good of a scorer in Acuff.
34:05
Now, Arkansas's defense can, can be a little shaky, and I think Arizona's certainly the better defensive team, but Arkansas's not out-athleted here, and that's...
34:14
W- now that we're in the nitty-gritty, now that we're essentially, like, in the playoff, I made that Iowa-Indiana football analogy earlier, we're essentially in, like, the playoff now. We're, we're in the Sweet 16.
34:24
And now that you're in that, it's all about, you know, who's got some better dudes.
34:28
Coaching certainly matters, but it's about, you know, the Jimmies and Joes as opposed to the X's and O's in a lot of scenarios, and Arkansas's got as many as Arizona. So I thought that that number was high.
34:40
I mentioned Iowa. I took it a better number. There's still some two out there. But Iowa is an underdog.
34:45
I'm gonna keep riding Ben McCollum here, uh, uh, with this team against Nebraska that I think is a coin flip game, and I think it's priced as such even though Iowa's a nine, Nebraska's a four.
34:55
They both split the season series home and home. So, uh, uh, that is one I certainly already have in pocket. And, uh, also one more, uh, St. John's Duke under, uh, at, uh, at, uh... And there's some 143 out there, 142.
35:10
I th- and you saw with that St. John's Kansas game, it got off to that real hot start,
35:15
and then all of a sudden that really went to a crawl because of the pressure and because of, you know, forcing turnovers and whatnot, and St. John's was really able to get Kansas kind of out of kilter.
35:27
And now they're playing against the best defensive team, though, though, in Duke, who got Ngongba back. Remember what they did to TCU on Saturday.
35:35
TCU, they kind of shut the water spigot off on TCU [laughs] where TCU couldn't score for about 12 or 13 straight possessions seemingly. So defensive battle here, under for me.
35:47
All right, before you go, coach you trust the most in a crunch time decision-making situation of the remaining 16, coach you trust the least. Uh, coach I trust the most I would probably say...
36:01
You know, you probably, I still think, gotta go with Tom Izzo in terms of trust just because of the experience, uh, that they have had, and he's been at it the longest.
36:11
Uh, uh, coaches I would trust the least, I would say maybe, maybe Nate Oats. Ooh. That, that's another one. Interesting. Like, that's the only double d- that's the only double digit spread, by the way, right now.
36:22
And Alabama hit 19 threes last night. That's not gonna work against Michigan.
36:27
That game got out of hand against Texas Tech, and Texas Tech, who's a good three-point shooting team, was, like, 4 of 25 or something ridiculous. Uh, I think Michigan's gonna blow Alabama out.
36:36
So I would say Nate Oats because he can't go away from that style. That's the only style that they know, and when that doesn't work, where do you go?
36:45
So maybe Nate Oats a little bit for me, uh, would be the one that would stand out. Yeah. I think Greg said it well earlier. Either Alabama wins or they lose by a million. Yeah. Right on. Paraphrase.
36:55
Um, I would have expected the Izzo answer. I don't know that I would've predicted Nate Oats, but I understand the thinking behind that. Wes, always a pleasure. Thank you so much. You bet, guys. Thank you.
37:04

38:09
I don't know where he goes, but he goes and he comes back. It's called el bano. El bano? Mm-hmm. All right. Good job. Thanks. Um- Wash my hands, too... Douglas Fleming, "Florida committed coaching malpractice.
38:22
You cannot let the player catching the inbound pass in stride toward their basket." I agree. "Has to be towards the inbounds pass.
38:28
Literally had three defenders behind the ball the second the pass was caught and allowed Iowa to have a three on two." That's what I said.
38:33
"Coachin' 40-plus years and the last thing we tell players in that position is, 'Don't get beat over the top.'" Douglas Fleming, thank you very much. I agree completely with all.
38:41
Douglas Fleming clearly a basketball coach. He's been coaching for years and years and years. Yeah, that was, that was terrible. Absolutely terrible.
38:48
Uh, the RGB, he says, uh, "Underdog typically offers double fault lines. Eight and a half on Coco today only offered as an over." You're not allowed to bet the under at Underdog. Hmm. Even though under is in their name.
39:00
Yep. [laughs] So point that out. Montreal Max, "Gil, does a match between doubles partners like we have in an hour with Andreva and Maboko as a pick play into your handicapping?"
39:11
It does not, because it's, it's almost impossible to quantify that, uh, Montreal Max. But I will say this, the interesting rise of Victoria Maboko
39:21
happening at the same time as the decline, if you will, of Mirra Andreva, is an interesting under the radar women's tennis sort of narrative going on right now. Not a narrative, a storyline really.
39:32
And they happen to be doubles partners, and they happen to be playing today, uh, at the, uh, Miami Open.
39:37
Douglas Fleming adds, the basketball coach, he goes, "Second-level malpractice is a full court dribble with limited time to a place on the floor, baseline below the backboard, that is statistically the highest turnover spot on the offensive end of the floor."
39:50
Douglas is, is heated about it, and he's right. He's absolutely right. Hey, a couple things here, uh, Kelly. One, we do have a Tankapalooza play today. Yeah, we do. All right, so. [upbeat music] Yeah. Palooza.
40:08
I am never not shocked by that. I know. We'll get you there. We'll get you there. [laughs] So Tankapalooza is something we have going on in the background here. We're only up a couple units doing this. Why? Because
40:20
33 and three in our Tankapalooza legs is not good enough to be more than two units up, or 2.04 units up to be precise. Here are again the NBA tanking trustworthy tiers as I see them.
40:32
Of the eight clearly tanking teams, Chicago Bulls, they're the barely trustworthy one. They've beaten us two of those three times, by the way. They've lost 20 of 25, but they've won four of their last 10.
40:42
They're slightly annoying, so they're the barely trustworthy one. As you said, they, they sort of have a different lineup now there. It's a completely different team from what they were- Yeah...
40:50
rolling out five months ago. Yeah. And the injury report today is shenanigans. Trustworthy, though not against other tanking teams. I got the Grizzlies, I got the Nets, I got the Kings.
41:00
As you see, they're terrible, except when they play other tankers. Then you just can't rely on them at all, 'cause they actually will have no problem beating those other tanking teams, and we stay away from those games.
41:11
Yeah. Uh, and then, uh, then there's this, this category, which is the extremely trustworthy, and by extremely trustworthy I mean extremely trustworthy tankers. The Wizards have lost 16 in a row.
41:22
The Pacers have lost 16 in a row. [laughs] Oh, God. Is this that good? They are great at tanking. The Mavs have lost 22 of 26, and three of those four wins were against other tankers. The Jazz have lost 25 of 32.
41:37
If they- They gotta stop messing around. Yeah, they're messing around. They're messing around. Jazz are, are, are flirting with leaving this category.
41:44
So today, and by the way we're, so again, we're, we're six and three doing these, but again, 33 and three on legs.
41:50
But it doesn't matter if we're s- if we're 33 and three, because those three is all it takes to, to trip us up. Here are, here are the plays we've had so far. Um,
41:59
the Bulls, the Bulls, and who, who knocked us out last week in that one? I can't remember. Hmm. But we, we were like a buck- a possession away from winning the first two of these. Um, today we got a five-legger, Kelly.
42:13
Oh, we're back in business. That's right. We're trying to go up three units total. This is a, basically a one-unit play. You're, you're getting 97 cents on the dollar here. Hawks, Magic, Rockets, Raptors, Blazers.
42:27
Shall I repeat that? Why, I think I will. Uh, the Atlanta Hawks, the Orlando Magic, the Houston Rockets, the Toronto Raptors, and the Portland Trail Blazers.
42:37
Those are the, the, those are the teams that constitute today's five-leg parlay, which again pays 97 cents on the dollar if it gets home. The Hawks are taking on the Grizzlies. How many...
42:49
Uh, the Hawks are on fire, by the way. Sh- Uh, 11, 11 to 12, 12 to 13, something like that. Magic are taking on the 16 losses in a row Pacers. The Rockets are taking on the Bulls. Are we a little scared about that one?
43:02
Uh, Raptors are taking on the Jazz. Blazers are taking on the Brooklyn Nets. There is one I didn't play against a tanking team. I did not include the Golden State Warriors. I want no part of that one Yeah, I'm with you.
43:15
The, uh... I have not bet one yet. I do have Magic, Hawks, Rockets, um, and I have the Clippers written down as a leg tonight too, which should not be, it would not be tanking. Nope.
43:27
Although the, although the Bucs might need to go back in the new category, uh, Gil, 'cause this is- Who won the great Giannis versus the Bucs debate? What do you mean, like version 4.0?
43:37
He's like, "I want to- 'Cause it's back at the- "... I, I want to keep playing." Dude, they're doing it again. And they're like, "No." Yeah. It was the end of last week. They're fi- they're currently fighting again.
43:43
[laughs] And Giannis wants to play. They don't want him to play. He's, he's injured. There's no upside for Milwaukee to play him.
43:49
This is kinda where I'm saying they might, especially if they win that fight, they might need to, we might need to put them in their own tier. So I have those ones circled.
43:56
The only thing I'll point out is this is a, it's a, it's a lengthy injury report today. Orlando I think is a great leg. Indiana's got about 17 guys on their injury report right now.
44:06
No idea what they're gonna do with some of them. So that's a lot of guys. M- Memphis looks like they're gonna have a lot of guys out. The big one's on the Atlanta side for me, though, Gil.
44:14
Jalen Johnson listed as questionable, uh, for that game. So I, I'm going to be involved with most of these with you later. I'm just waiting for some of these injuries to get sorted out. Any other NBA plays for you?
44:25
I do have one, actually one other tonight. I bet the Lakers. Man, this Lakers team is just on fire right now. 10 and one o- over their last 11. They are on, on the road at Detroit tonight.
44:37
Um, a game that obviously would've been lined very differently a, a week and a half ago. Uh, no Cade Cunningham for the Pistons. It's gonna be a couple weeks with him most likely.
44:47
Uh, right now on the Lakers injury report, you might have been tripped up by this yesterday, Luka had, had gotten his 16th tech. They thought he was gonna be ruled out. That got rescinded, so he will play today.
44:58
Hachimura and Marcus Smart are questionable right now, which I don't love seeing that. Uh, but right now they're about two-point favorites. I la- I put, I laid minus 125 on the money line.
45:07
Still seeing that over at Caesars. Uh, for the Lakers, again, 10 and one. N- 9.1 net rating that time. That is the second-best in the NBA. They have the eighth-best offense, eighth-best defense.
45:18
Me- over that same time period since March 3rd, Detroit six and five, uh, struggling here without Cade Cunningham. Five and tw- five and 10 ATS their last 15 games too, Detroit is. Interesting.
45:30
They were struggling with it before he went out. Danny, can we show those MVP numbers once again? 'Cause we were, we were tracking these when we thought, "Hey, Shai might not get to the qualifying number of games."
45:37
That's not happening. Shai, Shai is still this massive favorite, minus 1,000 to win MVP. But I did wanna just show, look at where Luka is now. Oh, it's incredible. He's down to 12 to one.
45:48
For what that, for whatever it's worth, right? He's down 12 to one. Everybody else now 33 to one or longer in this. Jaylen Brown is one game away from qualifying.
45:58
We can take that off the screen those, after, after the next game he plays, but not that it matters. He's 200 to one. Cade Cunningham will eventually not qualify, not that it matters.
46:08
But there you see the, uh, the games played, the games that these guys can still afford to miss. And as I said, just two things I wanna say about this.
46:14
It proves that load management is bullcrap because all these guys played when they needed to.
46:20
And the second part about this, Kelly, that I did wanna mention in addition to it proves that load management to me is bull, is that this 65-game rule is kind of terrible. Oh, yeah.
46:32
I said at the beginning about Adam Silver that he just... David Stern would've figured this out. Adam Silver, everything he touches, it's never quite right.
46:39
If Cade Cunningham were seriously up at the top of this list and he became disqualified because the man had a collapsed lung- Oh. And-... how is that fair?
46:50
It's, I get it, it was supposed to combat load management, but you've literally done, uh, what it's proven is two things.
46:57
It's done the opposite of combating load management because it, well, on the one hand it shows that load management is bunk, so it really just shows that any... So on the one hand he is right about that.
47:07
Let me, let me rephrase that. He did, he did prove his point about load management- It's tough... where it's clearly these guys can play when they want to. But
47:15
it destroys a bigger principle, which is why should these guys [laughs] who have legitimate injuries be disqualified? Well, it's, yes. It just, it shouldn't be that.
47:24
Okay, so a lot of the voters, uh, I will give Zach Lowe credit for this, he's been saying this the whole time. You, you're, you're basically saying we're not smart enough to, to decipher through these cases. Correct.
47:33
And what's going to happen with Cade Cunningham, he is not going to make All-NBA fir- first team, second team. He's not going to qualify for that. That's ridiculous. And that is ridiculous.
47:41
And most of the time, I believe Cade is gonna get lucky with this. Most of the time there is heavy, heavy financial impacts tied into making an All-NBA- Yes... first, second team. Anyway, he'll figure it out.
47:54
[laughs] Or he won't. Adam Burke coming back on The Numbers Game
