they're not trying to get me a mail-order bride or anything. It's also the part, though, that makes things like last week tough sometimes, right?

Because everybody comes to town and they're like, "Hey, we're, let's party." And it's like, "Hey, we've got regular lives to lead still out here."

Could you imagine if you just went to your local Albertsons and they were standing outside trying to sell you the hookers? Like, that would be amazing.

I mean, I wouldn't, I w- I, I mean, I still wouldn't be all that shocked.

[laughs] Still one of the most, still the, like, the most mind-blowing thing to me about living in Las Vegas is that there are, there are video poker and slot machines everywhere, including your Albertsons, including your gas stations, all of those.

You know, that's weird, but e- e- I get it because it wasn't where you were gr- that isn't weird to me. They actually, they had that in Louisiana. Really?

Yeah, there would be, like, video poker machines in gas sta- [audio breaks] stuff and things like that. Yeah, that... Okay, I didn't- Yeah... I did not know that happened- Yeah... in other states. Yeah, so.

That was mind-blowing to me my first time back. So yeah, so it didn't, it wasn't all that weird to me for, for a little- Especially since there's always someone playing there too.

It'd be one thing if I just said that and they were always dead and, and just nobody ever using them. Though there's always somebody at the gas station playing video poker.

The Cubs swept that Tuesday double header from the Brewers, so this actually keeps this NL Central race alive because it gets it down to seven games.

I mean, Kelly, we were talking w- this could've been a massive flip in all of this. Mm-hmm.

And even though we do have a decent amount of games left, if this thing had gotten up to nine, 10 y- you probably think there's zero chance.

There's still a very, very slim chance that the Cubs are able to go and compete in this division, but certainly getting that s- uh, g- getting that double header win makes it to where we can, uh, still have content about this division.

We can still make it interesting. Yeah, absolutely. Yeah, get, get in the mix. Hopefully this, uh, stays competitive.

Was just pulling up what the, uh, mo- best record odds are as well because Brewers, yeah, this is coming down, minus 185 for the Brewers right now. Phillies plus 650 in that market.

The Astros have lost three in a row, but the Mariners have lost four in a row, and the Rangers have gone two and eight in their last 10.

So despite the fact that the Astros have lost three in a row, nobody made a move at all on this Houston team because, uh, the Mariners can't win and the Rangers can't win either.

That was a bit of a bummer of a loss yesterday for us here on the... I mean, the Ha- this is one of those things where when the handicap works out and the results- Yeah... just don't match up, it's fine.

This is a fun full circle moment for me, because it was Gil on this show back in 2020 that first sparked my interest in Circuit Survivor So we are sitting now at, uh, you know, ni- just at 19 Grandi Simo entries.

We have a $15 million guarantee on the thousand dollar contest. When they announced the 100K contest, what, what did you think? What was your first thought as to how many they were gonna get?

Of course, they guaranteed 1.5, so that's 15 different entries. We've blown past that already My first thought was like 30, but it wasn't really based on anything. I think it was kind of a big mystery.

As time has gone by, I think we're starting to get a little bit better of an idea of it. But Matt, I was wondering like how it would affect the normal survivor pool.

Like, is that pool gonna be a little less sharp because some people are putting some of their budget toward that instead, and things like that.

So that was on my mind quite a bit Yeah, I think we're both interested to see, Tony, if, if there's more, you know, the more signups that continued, does that attract more of those sharp guys to try to go and beat, uh, beat that one as well?

We, for those of us who do shows, Matt's obviously all over the survivor documentary we have going on.

Uh, the big story the past couple years has been these week one upsets and kinda the big favorites losing, and you did a great piece, uh, laying out some of the details on this.

Just wanna start with kinda, uh, let you, let you speak about it, but kinda what was a big favorite and ki- kinda how you attacked this article

Yeah, so I looked at big favorites, and define that as those favored by five points or more, and just started looking at trends. This all came out of the paranoia of week one. I didn't wanna fall into traps.

I didn't start off writing an article. I started off trying to find some info that would help me avoid some week one traps.

So we looked at things like, you know, quarterback, uh, experience during the pre-season, was it a home team, was it an away team, how much experience does the head coach have, things like that

So when we look at this, there's been theories that have been thrown out as to why we lose so many people early on in the weeks, and i- is, is there any, is there anything that you found along the way that really points us to why this happens?

Is it because we are just, we think we know these teams, we don't really know these teams?

Are the point spreads maybe just a little bit off in the first few weeks to where these big favorites maybe shouldn't be as big a favorites as they actually are listed at? It's a good question.

So I, I don't know the answer. I have theories, right? Mm. But when the NFL started doing the three-game pre-seasons, I think that changed a little bit in terms of how the quarterback preparation is happening.

Like, one of the, because of the nug- nuggets that I found in the article, every single big favorite who lost in 2000, uh, since 2020, again, big favorite by five points or more, had a starting quarterback who threw 17 or fewer passes in the pre-season.

Four of the nine starting quarterbacks had zero snaps in the pre-season. Six of the nine had seven snaps or less.

And just to kinda give you like a qualitative example to back this up, 2023 Vikings are favored by five against the Bucs. Maybe I'm bringing back some bad memories for people that lost on that game.

But Kirk Cousins enters the season with zero pre-season snaps. He loses two fumbles in the first quarter, one from a quarterback-center exchange, the other one on a sack.

Now, of course we can't sit here today and say, "Oh, he lost those fumbles because he didn't play in the pre-season." But I think it's fair to ask that question. There might be a little bit of a connection there.

Another example, 2022, Burrow favored by seven points against the Steelers. Zero pre-season snaps, fumble in the first quarter, and those were both close games Yeah, Tony, I, I, that's great.

I think we're kinda seeing this all make sense even this pre-season, right, with some of these teams playing some of their starters more.

We saw obviously Cincinnati the best example, making it clear that they were gonna get more playing time for their guys in the pre-season, and we see that carry over, uh, into week one here at least the past few years.

So, uh, home road favorites, I think divisional, out of division, there's a lot. We talk a lot about that. You don't wanna use, uh, in-division opponents. Avoid those as much as you can.

You think you're getting better off when you go for a big home favorite as opposed to a road favorite. You dug into the numbers though. What did you find on those? Yeah, it's interesting.

Like, if you do a Google search right now for like biggest NFL survivor pool myths, you'll find information about how, you know, people think- Divisional teams are scary in survivor pools, but big favorites in survivor pools actually do pretty well when they're in division.

But I found the opposite when looking at week one big favorites. So is my sample size too small? You could make that argument.

Or is there something different about week one where these divisional favorites are actually in riskier territory?

So big division, uh, big favorites in division went 4-6 through two, since 2020, and non-divisional big favorites went 11-6, so big difference there. Again, small sample size, or might there be something to this?

So we're heading into this season. We start to look at week one. Have you started to identify... You're probably putting together your own strategy right now. Do you feel there is a trap sitting right now in week one?

Yeah. I think Washington feels a little trappy. The Giants played Washington pretty tough last year. That defensive line against Washington is interesting.

One of the things I talked about in the article is that it seems like teams with good offenses that are going up against teams with bad defenses that are big favorites are a little bit susceptible.

We hear so much in the NFL about how, you know, defenses are ahead of the offenses this time of year, and so I think Washington kind of fits that mold of a team that relies a little bit more on their offense and division situation.

So that one scares me a little bit. Yeah, I think that makes sense.

Uh, Tony, just kinda getting away from week one, kinda biggest piece of advice you have for kinda listeners and viewers out there for how to play survivor.

Any b- any big tips, m- maybe things that you learned very quickly early on like we all do when we play these contests? Hey, I like that advice in the Survivor documentary.

I forget who it was that gave it, but take a team that you can sleep okay at night with. And as we look at week one, would you guys agree with me?

I think the Bengals are the team that is gonna give you the most self-hatred if you lose with the Bengals, right? Because they've done it to us already in week one.

So if you go out with the Bengals, you're hating yourself. I feel like if you're gonna take that approach, the Broncos are probably the team that you can sleep okay with. If you say, "You know what?

Cam Ward is the next big thing. He won on the road in Denver against one of the best defenses in the NFL, nothing I can do about that," Denver might make you feel a little bit better that way.

Um, but other advice, I think zig while other people zag. You know, some of the data that I dug up here, check this out, guys. Since 2022, these big favorites of five points or more are 8-8 straight up.

That should terrify anybody in circus survivor. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. That the last couple years, even the big favorites are a coin flip.

I know there are some negative regression signs in the profile for them in terms of some of the close games that they won, some of the roster turnover, stuff like that, but I think Ohio takes a little bit of a step back with some of their losses, even though I do like that they bring back Parker Navarro and some familiarity, some continuity with their head coach, Brian Smith, who was the OC last year.

But I don't think Toledo's talent, you know, kinda stands out as much as it usually does in the MAC. So I think Buffalo at four to one is still a pretty good play to win that conference.

Uh, Drew Rasmussen's been really, really good throughout the course of the season, and Drew Rasmussen's actually been really good at home, uh, where he's got a 254 weighted on-base average against in 70 and two-thirds innings pitched.

Uh, he's a guy who doesn't walk anybody, keeps the ball on the ground. You know, the Yankees hit nine home runs yesterday. They, they really jumped all over Shane Baz after that rain delay.

But Rasmussen's not a guy that you can take yard all that often. And Cam Schlittler, who's a guy that you gotta be very, very careful when you pronounce his name- Yes. Oh, yeah. Yeah Mm.

Um, 394 ERA in his six starts, but a 524 fifth. Left on base percentage around 88%. I think there are a lot of negative regression signs building in the profile for him.

Also, he's more likely to give up fly balls, more likely to give up home runs there, uh, pitching outdoors in Tampa than Rasmussen is.

So I just thought the Rays were a pretty good play here in this one where, you know, I mean, their bullpen's actually been quite good in the month of August, which surprised me when I dug, dug a little bit deeper....

into their numbers. But I would say it's my, probably my favorite play for tonight, uh, is the Rays laying that short number around minus $1.20. Pretty sure Cam never got made fun of as a kid. I'm pretty, uh, no way.

Hurston Waldrop coming up for the Braves. He's gonna make his third start for them. Has looked really, really impressive through the first two. Gone six innings at least in both of those. He gets the White Sox today.

I don't know if you really can bet him at 190 on the money line, but I think there's probably some player prop stuff there with Waldrop to, to like. And I think they're gonna give him an extended look here.

They're out of it. They need to figure out what they're gonna do next year. Yeah, so Waldrop's a really interesting guy, and, uh, you know, I actually backed him in his last start. Mm.

I believe it was with an outs recorded prop, uh, something like that against Cleveland or maybe a team total under.

But, you know, Sean Murphy was on a rehab assignment earlier this season, and he basically told Waldrop like, "Hey, why don't you experiment with a sinker a little bit?

You know, why don't you try and kinda cut down on the fly ball rate a little bit? You know, have something that goes down in the zone, something that can miss barrels."

Well, all of a sudden, this is now a guy in his three major league starts with a 49% ground ball rate, pitched much better than his numbers would suggest in the minor leagues.

Had a bit of a walk rate issue down in the minors that has now gone away at the MLB level. And we see this a lot.

We see a lot of guys that get up to the big leagues, and all of a sudden their control gets a little bit better.

So Waldrop is one of the guys that does fit that profile here so far where, you know, he's done a good job with only five walks in 17 and two thirds. As you mentioned, working deep into games.

There's a lot of pitch efficiency here when you're getting guys to hit the ball on the ground. You know, you're not getting as many foul balls 'cause you're not working up in the zone, stuff like that.

I think he's a really, really interesting arm for them going forward, and a guy that, I mean, they took two years ago in the first round of the 2023 MLB draft.

So a guy that they had high expectations for coming out of Florida, seemingly living up to them.

The White Sox have actually been pretty good offensively for the last month and a half or so, which is a really big surprise. But Martin Perez is a gas can. I, I don't think he's any good. Mm-hmm.
