Belal Muhammad, but does so because Belal Muhammad basically employs a terrible strategy in that fight and doesn't play to his strengths, plays to, uh, or sort of lets Jack Della Maddalena off the hook.

That will not be the case here, correct? That's why I'm pretty confident that Islam Makhachev is gonna have a successful debut in a new weight class at 170.

I mean, A, he's the pound for pound number one fighter in the world. You look at his resume, uh, he's beaten the best of the best. He's beaten champions from other weight classes.

Uh, I mean, I think the one question mark was, you know, what's he gonna look like at 170? He looked great on the scale as actually Jack Della Maddalena, who earlier today, uh, you know, kind of struggled to make weight.

He had to have the curtain come out, uh, for him to make the championship weight. And you're right, you know, Jack Della Maddalena is the champion.

He's an outstanding striker, but he's never been in there with a wrestler or a grappler with capabilities like a Makhachev.

I mean, he was I guess, as you alluded to, with Belal Muhammad, but Belal decided to have a five-round boxing and kickboxing match, which is the strength of Jack Della Maddalena. I don't see that being the case.

I do believe Islam Makhachev is gonna hunt for takedowns for over 25 minutes in this fight, and at some point get Jack Della Maddalena, uh, down on the ground, uh, and control the fight, and I think be able to secure a submission.

He's been able to do it with some of the best grapplers we've ever seen in the sport, and Jack Della Maddalena has not been in there with a guy, uh, of his capabilities.

My only concern, Gil, is that at times, um, Islam Makhachev will be coaxed into a brawl, uh, from a striking standpoint.

But I believe with Khabib Nurmagomedov in his corner, and under the tutelage of a guy that went undefeated and, and retired at a great time, Makhachev's gonna have the right game plan going into this fight, which is why I like the price point at submission at plus-190, to hunt for that finish and get a sub.

I like that. Plus-190 Makhachev submission from Jordan Sherwood. All right, let's go to the co-main. Talking about this yesterday on the show with, uh, the great Rob Moreno as well. Valentina Shevchenko, 37 years old.

Uh, this is very tightly lined against Zhang Weil- uh, Weili, who was a strawweight champion, but w- but was beaten by Thug Rose a couple times when, uh, for those of us who are more casual observers of this, remember those, I think, above all.

How do you view this fight? This is pretty interesting. Yeah, uh, but, but reclaimed the title. Yeah. And I, I think that speaks volumes to Weili's just, just ability overall as a fighter.

Uh, you mentioned Valentina's age. Yeah, she's 37, but Weili's 36, so she's no spring chicken when it comes to, you know, MMA.

Valentina obviously has been doing it for a longer period of time, uh, been at the mountaintop now multiple times.

And this is actually a similar fight that we've seen Valentina fight, uh, years ago when she fought Amanda Nunes, where Valentina went up in weight and had two very competitive fights against Amanda Nunes.

Both I, I think split decision wins for Amanda, who many consider to be the GOAT. Valentina's gonna have, uh, the, you know, the, the striking advantage from the standpoint of footwork, timing, uh, a- a- and skillset.

Weili's gonna be the more powerful puncher, probably the better athlete. But again, she's going up in weight, and is, is familiar with bullying people and being able to be aggressive with people, control them.

I don't think that that's the case. I think Valentina Shevchenko is still at the top of her game at 37 years of age.

Um, you know, she's gonna be able at some point to work the clinch, get some takedowns, and I think win a fight, and probably win it via decision.

I'm not so confident that either w- woman is gonna, you know, finish the other. But I just like the overall skillset, Valentina familiarity.

She's gonna be the bigger woman in the cage, and that's why I like her to win the fight and, and win it just straight up on the money line at that dollar 10 price.

This is inspired by when Earnie Shavers, the great heavyweight boxer, was on The Numbers Game, and I, at, at 73 years old and I said, "If, if we, if we stood up right now and you punched me in the stomach, would I fall?"

Yeah, on the, uh, also on the main card, a big welterweight fight between Sean Brady and Michael Morales. Brady's got one loss to the former champion Belal Muhammad. He's a great wrestler, good grappler.

Uh, Morales, undefeated, enormous welterweight, power, good striking, suspect takedown defense. Uh, I'm leaning Brady just straight up on the money line on this fight because of the grappling.

But I think more importantly, it's going into the judges' scorecard, so I like that fight to go over, uh, two and a half. And then I think Carlos Prates, uh, is gonna nuke Leon Edwards.

Leon, Leon Edwards is not the same fighter when he won the title. I think he's kind of given up.

And albeit he's going in there against a guy that's gonna kickbox against him, I think Carlos Prates learned a lot from his loss to Ian Machado Garry.

Second installment of the six installment college football rankings came out earlier this week. No real surprises. Top five stayed the same. Ohio State, Indiana, Texas A&M, Alabama, and Georgia.

I suppose Texas A&M could say, "Hey, why are we only three?" I suppose Texas Tech could say, "Hey, we should probably be five, not Georgia." They're little quibbles, right?

I guess Miami still being, you know, even though they went up to 15, still far behind Notre Dame at nine. Is there anything other than that that you make a note of?

Y- the, the biggest puzz- the puzzling ranking that I saw was Utah at 13. Like, I don't know why Utah is 13.

It's almost like the committee is saying their losses to BYU and Texas Tech are, like, more impressive than Miami's win over Notre Dame or Vanderbilt's win over LSU or Missouri.

Like, Utah's done, like, nothing on the field.

Like, if you look at Sagarin ratings, like, Utah's best win is against Arizona State when Jeff Sims played quarterback, and then their next best win is at Cincinnati in terms of Sagarin, who's ranked in the college football playoff, but they're, like, 38th in Sag, so the, the rankings really don't, don't jive there.

Like, I don't understand why Utah's where they are. Uh, also optically for the college football playoff, adding the Utah AD this week to replace, uh, Mack Rhodes of Baylor was an interesting decision.

One thing that I think in terms of the rankings that we didn't see this week, I had talked Indiana were maybe to fall to three and Texas A&M were to move to two.

That potentially that could mean Indiana, like the l- if Indiana were to lose the Ohio, against Ohio State, uh, in the Big Ten championship game, that maybe they fall out of a first round bye. But that didn't happen.

I don't know if it will happen if it's one versus two.

But, uh, th- there would be potentially a scenario where, uh, you were looking at Ohio State getting a bye, SEC winner getting a bye, SEC title game loser getting a bye, and potentially an 11 and one Georgia that doesn't make the SEC championship game, uh, to get a bye.

So lot of permutations there. I- if you're looking... Well, I'm, I'm sorry, on, on a rant here. I've been just kind of- No, please... uh, spit, spit firing here.

If you're looking to make two bets, uh, I would suggest number one would be Miami to make the playoff. They're still around plus 500. Um, I think that if Miami wins out, they will make the playoff. However,

I'm far more in, in that than I am the fact that Miami actually does win out. Uh, which, which I know seems like a ridiculous thing to say. But, uh, we all know Miami struggles, uh, in November under Mario Cristobal.

But assume they beat NC State at home this week as a 15 point favorite. Again, dangerous assumption being they've, that they've lost as a double digit favorite, uh, at home already this...

Assume they beat a, a downtrodden Virginia Tech team next week. Again, a d- dangerous assumption, I know.

Then you're looking at them being at least a touchdown to, to maybe a 10 point favorite or so at Pitt, final game of the w- of the year.

And if you're worried about it then, you might be able to take a little bit of a Pitt money line, uh, there, or maybe Pitt plus the points to kind of just, uh, at least, uh, cover your stake.

And then the other bet I would make is Oregon to win the national title. Hmm.

And, and I say that, just kind of, uh, Jeff Schwartz, who's dialed into the Oregon program, uh, yesterday hinted that Evan Stewart, their best wide receiver going into the year, who's missed all, that he may be available.

Uh, whether it's the USC game, whether it's the Washington game, whether it's the college football playoff. Oregon, if DeCorion Jenkins comes back and Evan Stewart's playing, that is a dynamic offense.

And, uh, I think Oregon, I think I've seen 12 to one or so to win the title. That would be a team that I think is very dangerous, uh, in the playoff. Okay. So since you bring that up, let me just ask this question.

In your heart of hearts, no, forget your heart of hearts. In your head, how many teams do you think legit could win the title? I think Ohio State is a clear favorite. I think the defense obviously is legit.

Uh, I don't know how many out there have a secondary that can really contain, uh, both, uh, Jeremiah Smith and Carnell Tate and Claire, the tight end.

Uh, that is, th- that, they put so much pressure, uh, that passing attack on your defense. I don't know how many teams can do that. I think Ohio State, obviously.

I am not sold that Indiana can, even three wins away from home against, uh, top 20 Sagarin teams this year. I'm not sure Notre Dame can. I'm not sure Georgia can, even though Georgia has found a way to win.

And I'm not sure, Alabama I think is a team that a lot of people point to right now as being a team that you think can win. And, uh,

I worry about them because it seems like every single break that they have needed, every high leverage play this year has gone Alabama's way. And

the gambling gods and the, the football gods, as you know, have a, have a great sense of humor, of kind of reversing course at the most inopportune and, uh, worst possible time.

So, uh, Alabama's a team that I, I think ultimately at some point they're not gonna get the big play break that they've gotten all year long, a- and they could be a little bit more vulnerable than a lot of people think.

San Jose State out-gained Air Force by 135 total yards, averaged 7.3 yards per play on offense, that's good, and only gave up 4.1 yards per play to the Air Force option. That's bad.

So normally stats like that would lead to like a 14 to 17-point win,

but San Jose State was minus three in turnovers, which is completely random, bad luck, given that they had a better turnover margin than Air Force coming into the game, and a quarterback that had only thrown three interceptions on about 350 pass attempts coming into the game.

There was no way to predict that they're gonna be minus three in turnovers. And that, that, that happens. I mean, you know, uh, turnovers happen and a loss is a loss, but San Jose State was a great bet.

And there is a difference between a bet that loses and a, and a bad bet. Now let's say m- you came to me, you had a dice game, and you roll one die, and you're, you have two options to bet on.

Minnesota I've been betting against a few different times this year. They're one and seven against the spread. Uh, and they are gonna be at the mercy of the Ducks.

The problem is Dan Lanning's Oregon team usually doesn't show much mercy against lesser teams.

They're 18, eight, and one against the spread, laying 17 points or more in Lanning's tenure, so they don't mind running up the score. Um, I do realize Oregon's got some receivers out, possibly out.

Um, Decory Moore, their top receiver, missed last week's game, so did the tight end Kenyon Sadiq. Um, and Gary Bryan, a sort of a number three receiver, got injured early in that game.

All three are listed as questionable. I'm just gonna assume that none of those guys play. Um, but the, the other receivers, uh, Malik Benson and Jeremiah McClellan, they've combined to average 9.4 yards per target.

That's not too much worse than the 10.4 yards per target that Moore and Bryan have averaged.

And the number two tight end, Jamari Johnson, has averaged 10.6 yards on his 16 targets, which is better than Sadiq's 10.0 yards per target.

So I still docked Oregon just a little bit more than two points in my model Just assuming that all three guys would miss the game, although one or, one or two of them could play.

But I'll just assume the worst, that those guys would be out. But I still think, you know, even with those guys out, I still project Dante Moore to average 6.7 yards per pass play, which is fine.

And I expect them to run the ball more, which is gonna make their offense even better. Uh, Oregon's averaging 248 rushing yards per game. That's seven yards a rushing play.

Even though their top running back, who averages over eight yards a run, missed basically two and a half games, they're still averaging seven yards per run as a team.

And the Gophers are pretty good defending the pass, but they're not good defending the run.

They're about half a yard per rushing play worse than an average FBS team against the run, and about half a yard per rushing play worse than the average defense that Oregon has faced, and average those seven yards per run against.

So pretty likely that Oregon averages more than seven yards per run in the game, and I think they'll keep scoring late.

If they get a big lead and they just run the ball, they'll probably add on an extra garbage time touchdown if it comes to that. Um, as far as Minnesota, the problem with Minnesota this year is the, is the offense.

They're terrible. 4.8 yards per play.

They faced FBS opponents that would combine to average to allow 5.7 yards per play to an average offense, so they're nearly a yard per play worse than an average offense, which is, which is pretty bad, about seven points worse than an average team offensively.

Now, the Gophers have faced two good defensive teams this season, Ohio State and Iowa. They scored just three points in each of those games.

Now, Oregon's defense is 1.6 yards per play better than average, which puts them between Ohio State and Iowa's defensive ratings.

So Oregon's just as good as Ohio State and Iowa defensively, and the Gophers couldn't score against those teams.

Now, Oregon has faced three teams with offensive units as bad as Minnesota's offense: Oklahoma State, Oregon State, and Wisconsin. Ducks held those teams to three points, seven points, and seven points.

The math would project just four points for the Gophers if Oregon starters play the entire game.

I, I think maybe six or seven points is probably realistic, um, given that Oregon hasn't allowed more than seven points to a bad offense, and Minnesota hasn't scored more than three against a good defense.

Um, Oregon, the Ducks could pull their starters, but the four games in which they pulled their starters, they were up by an average of 41 points when they pulled their starters.

So like I said, he likes to run up the score, and he doesn't pull his starters until they're up by a lot. And if they're up by 41, even if they give up a late score [laughs] it's gonna be fine.
